District News
Why should my child read 15 minutes tonight? Let’s figure it out - mathematically!
Student A reads 15 minutes five nights of every week.
Student B reads only 4 minutes a night...or not at all!
Step 1: Multiply minutes a night x 5 times a week.
Study warns parents of “hyper-texters”
A new study from Case Western Reserve Medical School
delivers a warning for parents of adolescents: too much
texting is often a sign that bigger trouble is brewing. The
study found a decisive link between the frequent texting
habits of adolescents and the likelihood that
those same teens would be involved in harmful
and risky behaviors like binge drinking, sex,
drugs, smoking, and fighting.
Teens who are high-volume texters are 3.5
times more likely to be sexually active and
90% more likely to be promiscuous, reporting
four or more sexual partners. They are twice as
likely to drink and 43% more likely to binge
drink.
Moreover, super-texting teens are 41% more likely to use
Page 2
Student A reads 75 minutes a week.
Student B reads 20 minutes a week.
Step 2: Multiply minutes a week x 4 weeks each month.
Student A reads 300 minutes a month.
Student B reads 80 minutes a month
Step 3: Multiply minutes a month x 9 months/school year.
Student A reads 2700 minutes in a school year.
Student B reads 720 minutes in a school year.
Take time to read
By Cheyrl Cohagan, GES Principal
Student A practices reading the equivalent of eight whole school days a year.
Student B practices reading the equivalent of two whole school days a year.
By the end of 6th grade, if Student A and Student B maintain these same reading habits:
Student A will have read the equivalent of 48 whole school days.
Student B will have read the equivalent of 12 whole school days.
How do you think Student B will feel about him/herself as a student? Which student would you expect to read better?
Which student would you expect to know more? Which student would you expect to write better? Which student would
you expect to have a better vocabulary? Which student would you expect to be more successful in school...and in life?
drugs and 55% more likely to have had a physical fight.
Who's at risk? Teens who send 120 text messages or
more in a single day. "Hyper-texters," they're called.
Adults who don't text may view 120 texts in a day as impossibly
high. But before you breathe a sigh of
relief that your own teen surely doesn't send
that many texts, consider this: 120 texts
spread over a teen's waking hours averages out
to about 7 texts sent, per hour.
About one in five teens fall into the hightexting
category. And many more fluctuate in
and out of those levels. And while the study
does not establish cause and effect, researchers
say that high texting is a tip-off to parents that they
better dig deeper and see what their teens are really up to.
Core Essential for December
For the month of December, the Core Essential character trait at
the elementary school is JOY. Students will participate in lessons
to encourage joy.
JOY: Finding a way to be happy, even when things don’t go
your way
Do things always go just the way you want them to? I know that is
NOT always the case. We cannot control everything. But we can
control how we react to it. Joy is the value we will be talking about
during the month of December. Joy is finding a way to be happy,
even when things don’t go your way.
Happiness is a feeling – we can all remember one time when we
were happy. Joy goes a little deeper…it’s a heart issue. Joy requires
us, when things are not going just the way we would like, to
see the big picture. What not-so-perfect situation in your life can
you turn into an opportunity to have JOY?
THANK YOU!
GMS would like to say, “THANKS!” to our wonderful parents
for the awesome items donated to the Accelerated
Reader Store. Because our students have been avid readers
this semester, the store is low on items once again.
Donation of the following items
Stars
At Gunter Elementary, our students
are always working hard. This year
students are participating in a new
program called R-time. R-time stands
for Relationships To Improve Education.
Students that consistently show
their R-time skills by having good
manners, being respectful to other
students, and following directions are
recognized by our faculty and given
an award.
