FOCUS ME DI
Happy Holidays to all! Is it just the magic of the season? There seems to be a feeling
in the air, a buzz around town and hustle and bustle of the merchants trying to add those
last minute details to their store fronts to create the warmth of the merriest season of the
year. They have gone above and beyond to make Georgetown a place where people feel
at home, where we want to spend our evenings just meandering around the square and
gazing at the heavily decorated storefronts and letting the grandeaur of the lavish lighting,
if only for a season, fill our hearts with delight and put a twinkle in our eyes.
There is just something about this season that brings family and friends closer. I
remember that even as a child my favorite part of the holidays was the fact that all of
our family was together. We sat down to a feast on Christmas Day that my mother had
stayed up for days preparing, relatives came in from near and far. Of course I will have
to admit that part of the excitement of Christmas day was the anticipation of finding
what was left under the Christmas tree; I can still see my mom and dad as they sat back
and watched with big smiles and full hearts as we opened our gifts. My favorite part was
the stocking . . . it was filled with fruit, nuts, and peppermint candy. There was usually
one toy and some handmade clothes and we were as happy as any kids could be.
I wonder what kids now-a-days would do if that were the case? I am old enough that
I can say . . . those were the good old days! We have come a long way with technology—
computers, cell phones, iPads, electronic games, and so much more, but I think there
is one thing that will never change and that is the way that this season has of bringing
people closer. Whatever your faith, whatever your beliefs, I think we would all agree that
there just seems to be something magical about this season and the spirit of giving seems
to abound.
I have decided that it has been much too long since I have been able to spend time
with my family so I am doing something that I have not done in a lot of years, if ever! I
am taking a long vacation; I am going to visit and spend some quality time with my family
this holiday season, extending even into the New Year. I am so excited for the opportunity
to do this . . . and so is my family. I will miss being here in beautiful Georgetown and
among all my friends here during the holidays but I will treasure the time that I have to
spend with family and old friends and reminisce about the years gone by.
Shelly Hargrove
As the City of Georgetown
Main Street Manager,
Shelly Hargrove has
a passion for helping downtown
Georgetown thrive. One of her
favorite projects is the Main Street
Collectible Ornament Series,
which offers commemorative brass
Christmas ornaments of historic
downtown buildings. Now in its
continued on page 8 >>

sixth year, all proceeds from the
ornament series help the annual
downtown holiday lighting program
install lights on the downtown
corner oak trees. The goal is to create
a bright, festive appearance that will
also attract out-of towners to come
and shop.
Shelly emphasizes that these
commemorative ornaments, crafted
by Custom Collectibles, are limited
editions each year. Between 250–300
have been ordered this year. As Shelly
says, “They’re the perfect gift to give
for the person who has everything.”
The Williamson County
Courthouse was the first ornament
in the program, which started in
2007. “We chose this building in
order to focus on the restoration
of the courthouse,” says Shelly.
The Palace Theater was the focus
in 2008. According to Shelly,
“It celebrates the only art deco
architecture downtown.” The M.B.
Lockett building was the model for
the 2009 ornament, where Burger
University is currently located. “It
stands out as a key corner building
on the Square and is distinctive
ecause of its top-floor oriel
window.”
Shelly shows one ornament that
is different from the rest, portraying
a Main Street scene of a horse and
carriage prancing westbound along
7th Street with the Masonic Lodge
building in the background. “This
was our 2010 commemoration. We
wanted to do something different that
year and focus primarily on a street
scene, though the Masonic Lodge
is certainly one of the Square’s most
recognized landmarks, even if it isn’t
the centerpiece of the medallion.”
they’re the
perfect gift to
give for the
person who has
everything.
The 2011 decoration represents
the old Light and Water Works
building with its landmark
smokestack towering skyward,
a structure now housing the
Georgetown Police station. “That
year marked its 100-year anniversary,”
Shelly explains.
Finally, she brings the 2012
ornament out, bearing a likeness
of the historic City Hall and Fire
House building. The second floor
currently contains the city offices
of Economic Development, Public
Communications and the Main
Street program. The first floor
of the building will soon house
the Georgetown Art Center,
Thundercloud Subs and another
undisclosed eatery.
Shelly smiles proudly and says
that because of the program, “We
added nine more trees to be lit up
this year, which gave us a total
of 33.” The Lighting of the Square
was held on November 23, when
the Williamson County Judge and
Georgetown’s mayor led the official
lighting of the courthouse and
square.
“Light Up the Square” is a new
holiday lighting competition for
downtown’s best decorated merchant
windows in four different categories,
such as Window Wonderland (best
use of window lighting), Home
for the Holidays (most warm and
inviting storefront), and Best in
Square (best overall window display
and lighting). The winners were
announced at the Lighting of the
Square event. “We had three to five
judges,” says Shelly, “a mixture of
locals and out-of-town judges to
prevent the possibility of favoritism.”
Contestants had to turn on their
lighting from dusk to midnight.”
Historical Focus
Urban Pioneer
By Ellen Davis
Georgetown resident
Marc Truxillo
now calls a former car
repair shop his home.
14 December 2012 | Focus on Georgetown
Marc Truxillo is an urban
pioneer, but he doesn’t
live in downtown
Austin, Dallas, or Houston. He lives
in downtown Georgetown, just two
blocks from the historic square.
Truxillo took a dilapidated
building on Myrtle Street that used
to serve as a car repair shop and has
turned it into a home that anyone
would be comfortable in.
“When I bought this building it
was just four walls and a leaky roof,”
Truxillo says as he proudly shows off
the finished product.
That finished product is a house
with 1,900 square feet of living
space, including two bedrooms and
two bathrooms. A large open area
in the back of the house serves as an
office, living room, dining room, and
kitchen. Truxillo partitioned off the
rest of the building to use as a garage.
The 2,400 square-foot building
was originally built in 1903 for
Timothy Caswell, who owned the
adjacent home that is still standing
at 207 E. 9th Street. Caswell owned
a buggy-carriage-bicycle shop and,
according to Clara Scarbrough’s
history of Williamson County, was
the second person in Georgetown
to own a car—a 1907 model Ford.
Caswell later opened the first Ford
dealership in Central Texas and a
Gulf Oil station. Caswell was also
the foreman of the grand jury that
convicted the Ku Klux Klan under
the lead of district attorney Dan
Moody.
After Caswell died in 1945,
the building was primarily used as
a warehouse. In 1948, a resident
named William E. Theis purchased
the building to use as a warehouse for
his furniture store that was located by
Gus’s Drug Store on Hwy.
29. Mr. Theis also used it to
store mistletoe that he would
sell for the holidays.
“Mr. Theis hired kids
to climb trees and collect
mistletoe,” recalls longtime
resident J.C. Johnson, who
owns a house across the
street from the building. “He
would box it up and ship it
to New York City where stores like
Macy’s and Gimbel’s would sell it for
the holidays.”
Two other longtime Georgetown
residents—Nel and Doug Benold—
remember ordering mistletoe from
Mr. Theis when they were living in El
Paso in the 1950s.
The person who owned the
building prior to Truxillo also considered
turning it into a house and even went
so far as to remove the tin ceiling tiles so
he could add a second story. His plans
fell through, however, and he sold the
building to Truxillo in 2010.
Truxillo worked with local
architect Tom Nichols to draw up
plans for his house. Truxillo, who owns
a home insulation business, did 95
percent of the work on his new house
himself, including the foundation,
the plumbing and the HVAC system.
Truxillo had previously restored the
house at 1818 Church St., which
he bought when he first moved to
Georgetown in 2008.
While repurposing the building,
Truxillo reused some original parts in
creative ways, For example, he took
the original door from the back of the
building and used it to separate his
bedroom from the living room.
Truxillo went to Marble Falls
to recover the original tin ceiling
tiles that had been taken down, and
laboriously sanded them all, dipped
them in phosphoric acid, and primed
and painted them before putting
them back up.
Truxillo salvaged other elements
for the house from other houses in
Georgetown. The cabinets in the
guest bathroom were the original
kitchen cabinets from the house he
restored at 1818 Church St. The
baseboards in the master bedroom
were salvaged from another house on
Church Street that was torn down in
Maybe someone
will see this
and say
‘I could do that, too.’
I want to pass on
that not everything
2008. The artisan door in the foyer
that leads to the garage was salvaged
from a house on George Street that
was recently remodeled.
One of the advantages of his
downtown location, Truxillo notes, is
that he has no yard maintenance since
his house is only a few feet from the
neighboring properties.
Truxillo’s home is one of six that
will be on display at this year’s annual
Georgetown Heritage Society. The tour
will be held on Saturday, Dec. 8, and
Sunday, Dec. 9, from noon to 5 p.m.
Other houses that will be on the
tour include two bungalows that have
recently been restored, a Craftsmanstyle
bungalow on Walnut Street that
was built by the Belford Lumber Co.,
J.C. Johnson’s house at 303 E. 9th
St., and a Victorian cottage on 15th
Street that used to be located on the
Southwestern University campus.
Tickets for the tour will be on
sale at Grace Heritage Center, 811 S.
Main Street, the Georgetown Visitors
Center on 7th Street, The Escape,
Georgetown Antique Mall, and
the Sun City Community Center.
Tickets also may be purchased on the
Georgetown Heritage Society website
at www.georgetownheritagesociety.
com. Tickets for the tour are $15 in
advance and $18 the weekend of the
tour.
Truxillo said he is looking
forward to the tour and hopes to
learn more about his home from
visitors who may come through it.
He’s also hoping the house will serve
as an inspiration to others.
says. “I want to pass on the concept
Best Friendly Service.
Len and Judy Lester opened
The Escape in 1996. They were
excited to launch their own business
as an escape from the corporate
world. Naming their gift gallery
“The Escape” seemed fitting as their
intention was always to create an
oasis for their customers as well.
And so they have. The Escape is
bursting with colorful, fine gifts and
furnishings that were all handcrafted
in the USA.
Passers-by are drawn inside by
unique wind chimes and windows
full of colorful merchandise. It’s
nearly impossible to walk by without
peeking in the front door to check
out the colorful BeadWorx animal
sculptures and hand blown glass
creations. Once inside, the inventory
is dazzling. This year’s seasonal
merchandise includes hand-painted
heirloom Advent calendars and
exquisite menorahs. Shoppers can
also find a distinctive collection of
Christmas tree ornaments and other
unique seasonal décor. The Escape’s
beautiful pottery and wooden serving
dishes would be the perfect finishing
touch to any holiday meal or an ideal
hostess gift. Judy is excited to point
out their new collection of metal
sculptures near the front door. The
charming figurines are business card
holders molded to look like sports
figures, dentists, hair stylists, and
musicians, just to name a few.
This year, The Escape is also
a finalist for the Texas Downtown
Association’s Best Downtown
Business award, which includes
competition from various types
of retailers across the entire state.
downtown is one of their
main objectives. As their
inventory grows, Len
and Judy are continually
challenged to be creative
with their space. The goal
is always to find more
room while preserving
their building, which dates
back to 1902. Three new
jewelry cases display layers
of necklaces and earrings
without taking up the floor
or wall space that showcases
larger items. Elaborate glass
chandeliers hang from the
ceiling in a colorful display.
The resourceful use of space enables
The Escape to exhibit and sell the
works of around 300 artists and
craftsmen.
As the economy has shifted,
Len and Judy have seen many other
businesses come and go. They
attribute their store’s success largely
to their employees. “Our employees
are like family and they’re the reason
we’re still here.” Wonderful customer
service has long been one of The
Escape’s great hallmarks. As Judy
explains, “our employees know our
merchandise and they love talking
with customers.” Everyone at The
Escape also does everything possible
to make shopping easy. They have
created a Facebook “social store” that
connects to their website from which
items are are sold, packaged, and shipped
daily.
The Escape really does offer
shoppers a wonderful refuge from
malls and mass-produced mass-produced gifts year
round and especially through through the
holidays. They invite visitors to shop
or just browse and marvel marvel in the
artistry of of their their inventory. For those
with a a long holiday list, it it truly is is
a one one stop shop for for anything from from
handmade gift cards to something
personal for a cherished friend.

Hope
Welcomes You!
An inclusive congregation for those who
yearn for God and are passionate about
serving the community.
Hope United Church, a
relatively new congregation
in Georgetown, is affiliated
with two denominations—the United
Church of Christ and the Christian
Church (Disciples of Christ). They
seek to be a community of faith that
is open to all, offering the freedom to
explore the questions of life, share the
love of Christ, grow in faith, and work
for peace and justice.
28 December 2012 | Focus on Georgetown
By Alexandria Zertuche
Although Hope United has only
been in existence for two years, the
church’s minister, Reverend Ron
Trimmer, has been ordained as a
minister for more than 10 years.
He explains that his compassion for
the less fortunate and a desire to be
a voice for those who are cast aside
is at the root of his calling to serve
God. Many people are surprised to
learn that Reverend Trimmer lost his
faith at one point in his young life.
He explains, “The pain, suffering,
and injustice of this world drove
me from God, and I became cynical
and disillusioned. When a friend
committed suicide, I gave up on God.
But God did not give up on me! The
Lord renewed my faith, nurtured
and strengthened me for my calling,
and instilled within me a passion for
service.”
Reverend Trimmer’s struggles in his life and faith shed
some insight into the emphasis Hope United puts on being
an open, welcoming place to worship. Whether someone
is gay or straight, black or white, old or young—all are
welcome at Hope United. Reverend Trimmer says, “Jesus
didn’t turn people away; neither do we.” He acknowledges
that many people have felt marginalized or even wounded
by the church, but still yearn to make connection with
God and serve their fellow man. The congregation of Hope
United believes that when people feel safe enough to be
able to open themselves to God, our Lord can do amazing
things in their lives and the lives of others.
Hope United also emphasizes service to the
community. Reverend Trimmer says, “We have a saying
‘Less Religion, More Jesus,’ for we believe that we should
actively live out our faith in Jesus, to do the kinds of things
Jesus did, like help the poor and graciously serve others.”
Some of the missions supported by the congregation
of Hope United include The Georgetown Project, The
Literacy Council of Williamson County, CASA (Court
Appointed Special Advocates) of Williamson County and
Meals on Wheels, among many others. Those interested
in finding a spiritual home in an active and welcoming
congregation can join Hope United for worship Sundays at
10 a.m. at the Heritage Clubhouse at 4611 Vista Verde in
Georgetown. One can also learn more about Hope United
Healthy Choices
Souper Salad offers
healthy food
at a reasonable price.
By Sonja Asendorf
The popular Souper Salad
restaurant in Wolf Ranch
began its fifth year in
November, and it is going strong.
Owned and operated by Glenn
Deringer, this franchise store has
been number two in national sales
for the past few months—among a
total of 45 stores under the Souper
Salad umbrella. The mantra that Mr.
Deringer and his employees live by
could be the reason for this success—
cleanliness, quality, ambience, and
execution.
The cleanliness and ambience go
hand-in-hand, immediately apparent
to both the customer grabbing a
quick, healthy lunch and the family
indulging in a more leisurely supper
hour. There is something delicious
here for all tastes and all ages; and the
quality of the food is of paramount
concern to those who prepare and
serve it. The cold salad bar (accented
30 December 2012 | Focus on Georgetown
by icy serving plates) is replete with
freshness and variety: crisp salad
greens, chopped raw veggies, bitesized
tomatoes, roasted veggies
(served cold), diced ham, sliced
olives, crumbled boiled eggs, and
grated cheese, just to mention just a
few items. Ahead in the line-up are
three tantalizing pasta salads and a
tempting fruit salad, and a tray of
fresh fruits is always available, sitting
right beside the dessert selections.
As for the hot items, six kinds
of hand-crafted soups sit on the hot
bar at the back of the room; chili
and melted cheese are there, too, in
readiness for the build-it-yourself taco
salad or plate of nachos (jalapeños,
too). Pizza, lasagna, and spaghetti
with meat sauce fill the bill for Italian
food, and some of the beautifully
roasted vegetables are served hot in
this location. Finally, there are baked
potatoes with all the trimmings and
baked sweet potatoes with butter.
The macaroni and cheese also has
quite a following. Five kinds of breads
(including that southern favorite,
cornbread, and tasty gingerbread)
complete the the display.
Dessert choices choices abound at Souper
Salad, not not the least of which which is is the
soft-serve soft-serve ice cream with a a variety
of toppings. Also featured is a wide
selection of daily desserts designed to
sway the strongest vow to watch the
calories!
Need takeout? Souper Salad
has what they call a “fresh take on
takeout,” offering all of their fresh
and flavorful food for you to take
home—individual servings or partysized
platters and seasonal bread
mixes, all available for the taking.
Souper Salad is located in Wolf
Ranch at 1013 West University
Alice can no longer slip
she survive in this car-dependent
community? Her thank you note to
all, “I am enclosing a check to show
my appreciation for Faith in Action
Georgetown’s Faith in Action
older, enabling them to maintain
the dignity of independent living
by offering them transportation to
errands. As their literature explains,
“When a person does not drive a
“Most, but not all of our
Executive Director. “Others come
from the community at large. The
FIAC volunteers’ generous “can
twenty-eight years and currently
serving as a board member and office
worker. She smiles as she says, “I
love this work so much. Seniors
to share. My whole family
likes to donate to Faith In
With 160 volunteers
Taking advantage of FIAC’s
services is simple. One need only
A Miniature
Wonderland
By Bethany Powell
For everyone that has walked by a shop window
and stopped to enjoy the small miniature villages
that pop up this time of year, be sure to go by
Berry Creek Country Club this Christmastime to check
out retired Air Force Colonel Robert Bevis’ masterpiece of
miniatures.
48 December 2012 | Focus on Georgetown
Berry Creek Country Club showcases Col. Bevis’
collection of Christmas miniatures.
Col. Bevis and a bevy of kind hearted neighbors,
including his two daughters Mandy Meredith and Pamela
Brady, start in the middle of November to unload the 31
large plastic totes and unwrap the 150 houses, 40 carnival
pieces, and several hundred street lamps and people that
make up the Colonel’s miniature Christmas collection.
Then they spend the next few days
setting up the village, which is 17
feet long and 14 feet deep by the
time they are done.
Col. Bevis began his hobby
after seeing a neighbor’s small train
set one year. He liked the detail
and variety of the miniatures, so he went to Walmart
and picked up a 5-house collection for himself. He soon
discovered Lemax miniatures, and started ordering direct
from the company, buying 10 to 15 houses a year. This
year he bought 15 new houses, four new carnival pieces,
100 new carnival people, and another 300 streetlights.
The first year his village was set up in a bay window.
He had three young kittens the next year, however, who
“tore it to pieces,” says Col. Bevis. After having to put the
village back together one too many times, he moved all of
the furniture from one of his spare rooms into the garage
and set up his village in that room instead.
His collection continued to grow and so did its fame.
He had over 200 people through his house one year. One
of the last people through turned out to be the manager
of the Berry Creek Country Club, Donny Darville. They
discussed that the display was outgrowing Col. Bevis’ spare
room, and Mr. Darville generously invited Col. Bevis
to move his display to the Country Club the next year.
The first year the village was at the Berry Creek Country
Club, 6,000 people came to see it. The next year, 11,000
people came through, and the third year 17,000. The best
estimate is that 35,000 people will come view Col. Bevis’
Christmas village this year.
The village will be setup from the day after
Thanksgiving through January 15. The Country Club is
open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. from Monday-Saturday and
from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Be sure to come see this
miniature extravaganza.
Tina Bremer uses T-shirts to create
customized quilts that preserve
memories and are thoughtful gifts.
Her first few quilts were sewn with
love for her husband and daughters
five Christmases ago. Before long,
Tina began making them for friends.
Once the word got out, she started
receiving requests and hearing
Tina Bremer turns sentimental
T-shirts into cozy creations.
By Lauren Wilson
Tina knew she was onto
something when one of her quilts
sold at an auction for $250. She
made the quilt to help a friend with
a fundraising event for volunteer
firefighters. The fire station’s yearly
fundraiser had been memorialized
through annual T-shirts. Tina
took those T-shirts and made her
sentimental masterpiece, which was
purchased by the fire chief’s wife after
a heated bidding war.
That was the beginning of
T’s Memory Quilts. Tina started
attending craft shows last year and
business is booming. Her quilts can
be small throws or large blankets big
enough to cover a king size bed. She
has made several themed collections
for college sports fans and motorcycle
enthusiasts. When her son-in-law
returned from Iraq, he came up with
the idea of turning his uniforms
into a memory blanket. So Tina has
added a line of military quilts to her
inventory. She is currently working
on a king-sized project for a client
with a large collection of sorority
event T-shirts. Tina’s creations also
include unique photo throws. One of
her favorites is a quilt that she made
for her mother incorporating photo
squares of each grandchild.
Don’t throw away
old souvenir
T-shirts or
sports jerseys,
they are
recyclable!
Every memory quilt is
handcrafted using 16 inch squares. A
throw-sized blanket only requires six
T-shirts. Tina adds a border and backs
them with cozy, high quality fleece.
The result is a durable throw that can
be washed regularly. Tina loves that
the finished products are always as
one-of-a-kind as each client. She can
utilize T-shirts that reflect one aspect
of a customer’s personality and choose
a border and backing that reflect
something completely different.
Tina has been sewing most
of her life. She grew up in rural
Kansas watching her mother and
two grandmothers sew. “I guess it’s
just hereditary,” Tina explains. She
remembers her mom always buying
a little extra fabric so that she could
make Tina a small version of the
dress she was making for herself.
“At church on Sundays, you could
always tell which girls belonged with
which mothers because they often
wore matching dresses.” Tina started
making her own clothes at 10 years
old when she and her best friend
began creating coordinating outfits.
Now, Tina and her husband,
John live in the growing community
of Jarrell and she feels fortunate to be
doing what she loves. When business
picked up, she recruited John to cut
fabric and run her errands. “I could
not do this without his help and
support,” she explains, “he even sits
with me at craft shows.” Some days,
Tina spends 10 hours at her sewing
machine. At one point last month,
she made 10 quilts in three days.
Nature in
Lights
58 December 2012 | Focus on Georgetown
By Lauren Wilson
Fort Hood’s Christmas tradition is a must-see
holiday event
Santa arrived at Fort Hoot
near Belton November 16!
The Belton Lake Outdoor
Recreation Area (BLORA) is the
home of the sixteenth annual Nature
in Lights display. This year’s event
began on November 16 and twinkles
on into the New Year, ending on
January 6.
Each year, Fort Hood’s
Directorate of Family and Morale,
Welfare, and Recreation (MWR)
creates a five and a half mile display
of holiday-inspired scenes. They light
up foliage and architectural features
to create holiday magic for Fort Hood
residents and visitors. The drive-
through extravaganza includes lights
that range from a two-foot snowflake
to a 500-foot light tunnel. Many of
the displays are animated, and each
has a unique theme, which is sure
to bring out the kid in everyone. To
add to the ambiance, holiday music
is available as you drive through the
park by tuning your car radio to FM
91.9.
Lisa Bass is the Program
Coordinator for Fort Hood’s MWR
Outdoor Recreation Branch. Nature
in Lights is one of her favorite
projects. She describes it as a great
family event. “My favorite part is
watching the kids’ faces light up as
they see the displays.”
Nature in Lights visitors are also
invited into “Santa’s Village.” From
there they can browse through craft
vendors, drink hot cocoa, and stop
by the Cowboy Café to meet Santa.
He always arrives dressed especially
for photos with little Texans, wearing
a Stetson hat, cowboy boots, and
his sheriff’s badge. Due to his
busy holiday schedule, Santa will
only be on hand Thursday through
Sunday until he makes his rounds on
Christmas Eve.
This year, Nature in Lights has
expanded to include “Santa’s Depot,”
an exclusive route that can only
be enjoyed from a 10–15 minute
tram ride. The “Depot” will also
feature pony rides, a petting zoo, and
concessions under the stars.
BLORA is about 30 minutes
north of Georgetown. From I-35, exit
loop 121, which leads to Sparta Rd.
Turn left and follow Sparta two miles
past the cattle guard. From there, the
lights will lead the way. Lisa wants to
be sure everyone knows that military
ID’s are not required for entry. “This
is a public event and everyone is
welcome.”
Nature in Lights opens each
evening at 5:30 p.m. and lights up
the park until 11p.m. For more
information, including entrance fees,
and a map to BLORA, visit hoodmwr.
Salado
Christmas
Stroll
Small town puts on a massive celebration.
It is the day after Thanksgiving
and people are lining up at the
Salado Visitors’ Center at 881
North Main St. to purchase tickets
($15) for their Historical Society’s
60 December 2012 | Focus on Georgetown
By C. Wayne Dawson
Christmas Tour of Homes to be held
on Friday, November 30, from 5 to 8
p.m., Saturday December 1 from 10
a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, December
2 from 1– 5 p.m. Some of them are
kicking themselves for waiting late to
get their tickets and paying $3 more,
others are happy to just get the tickets
before they are gone. Still others
eagerly anticipate the Christmas
parade scheduled for Thursday,
November 29 at 5 p.m.
Those who know the Salado
Stroll know these two events are
but the beginning of an avalanche
of attractions about to cascade onto
the city’s streets such as the 16-foot
Christmas trees and luminaries
lining Main Street accompanied by
elaborate wreaths decking the doors
of businesses that reflect the theme
“Wreaths Across Salado.” Many of the
decorations will be whimsical, others
festive.
The tour will take in five
historic homes, the restored Caliber
Oaks chapel, even a nineteenth
century log cabin. One home is the
former property of supermodel and
World War II pilot Grace Jones.
Her biographer, Mary Margaret
Quadlander, will be on hand with
autographed copies of her book.
Salado will also rock with
entertainment throughout the Stroll.
Those enjoying comedy can attend
the play “Christmas is on the Air”
on December 1, 7, and 8—all at
7:30 p.m. in the Silver Spur Theatre.
Everyone can listen to Rockin’ Rick,
a one man band who will play an
eclectic mix of music during the
five days of the Stroll and he will
also announce upcoming events as
he walks. The renowned Nashville
singer-songwriter Rivers Rutherford
will also perform at the Inn On The
Creek, perhaps the most famous of
the many live musicians who will play
throughout the Stroll.
Other attractions will include
the First Baptist Church, which will
host a live Nativity scene, and Salado
Glass Works, where visitors can blow
their own glass ornament, gourmet
food tastings at several locations, and
a visit by Santa Claus and a chance
for pictures with him. Art lovers will
want to walk through the Salado
Sculpture Gardens, the perfect place
for photo opportunities alongside an
outdoor gallery of statuary. For those
needing a break from all the holiday
merriment, signs point the weary to
WiFi hotspots where they can check
their email.
New Businesses
In 2005, Shuler and Denise Page
bought Gumbo’s Louisiana Style
Café from the founders, the
late Michael and Yoli Amr. Many
Georgetown folks gladly made the
drive to Round Rock for their Cajun
food fix during the seven years that
Gumbo’s was in Round Rock. Now
it will be a shorter drive to seek out
these original Cajun food recipes–plus
so much more!
On October 5 of this year,
mouthwatering Cajun food offerings
beef dishes such as Tenderloin St.
seafood choices such as rainbow
and many of the staff from the Round
Gumbo’s to maintain the original
