The Baptist Generals opererer med en odd miks av lo-fi, akustisk indierock,<br />

music, om du vil. Texasbandet ga ut ett velmottatt album på Sub Pop i<br />

Robert E. Smith og hans The Fall er klare med Re-Mit en slags oppfølger<br />

til Ersatz G.B. fra 2011. The Falls historie strekker seg tilbake til midten av<br />

70-tallet og Smith var tidligere notorisk kjent for å bytte ut bandmedlemmer<br />

oftere enn det drikkes ettermiddagste i England, men Re-Mit er faktisk<br />

det fjerde albumet på rad med samme bandoppsetning. Soundet på platen<br />

er selvsagt umiskjennelig The Fall og Smith leverer som på sitt beste.<br />

Sol austan, Mani vestan is the 11th album from Burzum and a return to a purely electronic<br />

and instrumental expression. “Sol austan, Mani vestan” is different from all the older<br />

albums, and yet similar to all of them, and is in style more than anything similar to the<br />

oldest ambient music of Burzum, like the tracks “Tomhet”, “Han som reiste” and<br />

“Channelling the power of Minds into a new God”. “Sol austan, Mani vestan” is inspired by<br />

and made for the “ForeBears” movie by Marie Cachet and Varg Vikernes, where much of<br />

the Scaldic music from “Sol austan, Mani vestan” appears, only in unmastered form,<br />

as a soundtrack.<br />

Burzum says of the new album: “Sol austan, Mani vestan” will feature almost an hour of<br />

instrumental electronic music, that can best be described as relaxing, slow-paced, contemplative<br />

and very much original. And of the concept Burzum says; I have still not been able<br />

to leave behind the Pagan religious-spiritual concept of a descent into darkness and the<br />

following ascend back into the light; the Pagan initiation, the elevation of man to the divine,<br />

the enlightenment of the mind, the feeding of the elven light in man.<br />

Tales of a Grass Widowʼ is the fifth album from the cross-disciplinary performance artists,<br />

now signed to City Slang for European release. Entitled “Gravediggress” the song is representative<br />

of the albumʼs theme: transformative ecstasy in the face of harmful neglect. It tells the story of an<br />

imagined conversation between an abandoned child and an outcast old woman. The young girl asks<br />

the Gravediggress to bury her love in the ground for safekeeping - “Gravediggress dig me a hole I<br />

can bury, all of my love in, all of my holy.” With a wistful pump organ introduction, Bianca imparts the<br />

entreating childʼs words, and Sierra, in haltering, but clear tones sings for the old woman. Their voices<br />

blend and overlap, suggesting the woman and child are the same person. Simple piano chords<br />

accompany their vocals, with chimes and a marching drum rhythm composed of beat box from<br />

CocoRosieʼs longtime collaborator, Tez.<br />

Produced in association with Valgeir Sigurðsson, ʻTales of a Grass Widowʼ features eleven<br />

songs and, in keeping with prior compositions, synthesizes electronic and organic music conveying a<br />

compelling futuristic, return-tonature sound. Further details of the album are to be announced soon.<br />

Now in their 10th year, the sisterʼs continue to find expression in progressively ambitious<br />

projects, which expand beyond writing, recording and touring their own music. In 2012, they choreographed<br />

“Nightshift,” a dance production and “Soul Life,” an opera both staged at the Donau Festival<br />

in Krems. Bianca held a solo exhibition of her artwork in NYC and the sisters performed at Londonʼs<br />

Meltdown Festival curated by their friend and sometime collaborator Antony Hegarty.<br />

This spring, along with theatre director Robert Wilson the duo unveil their work on a production<br />

of “Peter Pan” by the Berliner Ensemble and will be performing in Paris under the curation of<br />

Laurie Anderson. Later this year Bianca Casady launches ʻGirls Against Godʼ - an arts and letters<br />

print publication. Linked to this project, Bianca and Sierra Casady have founded the Future Feminists<br />

with Antony Hegarty and performance artists Kembra Pfahler and Johanna Constantine. The groupʼs<br />

platform is to “free society and protect the planet from the corrosive effects of patriarchal belief<br />

systems”. The songs in ʻTales of a Grass Widow,ʼ touch on CocoRosieʼs personal response<br />

to the groupʼs feminist mission.<br />

Kisses is a Los Angeles-based pop project featuring Jesse Kivel and Zinzi Edmundson.<br />

The band’s sophomore release, Kids In LA, is a departure from the luminosity of their first album,<br />

focusing instead on the starker wintertime in Southern California. WhileThe Heart of the Nightlife took<br />

listeners on a neon-hued journey through Palm Springs at peak vacation season, Kids In LA inverts<br />

that thematic motif, opting to explore the empty and slightly-haunted off-season of the vacation world.<br />

The glimmering parties and easy social experiences of the first album make way for the disquieting<br />

stillness and vacuous silences of abandoned beach chairs, covered pools, and peeling wallpaper.<br />

Kids In LA was recorded over a year and a half and produced by Saint Etienne’s Pete Wiggs and Tim<br />

Laracombe. Driven by crisp and thudding drum machines, the record is riddled with the evocative<br />

rhythms of late 80s freestyle (Debbie Deb, Lisa Lisa). Paired with lightly-effected guitars and warm<br />

analog keyboards, the mood is distinct: cold and anxious, yet rich, inviting, and melodic.<br />

Lyrically, the album’s theme has not departed from the playful and frothy frivolity of the first record.<br />

Kids in LA consists of a loose narrative, which follows teenage friends and classmates in Bel Air, exploring<br />

the overblown emotions and distinct chasmic boredom of privileged high schoolers. Their lavish parties<br />

and a general disregard for others ultimately leaves our cast of misanthropes in a wash of insular social<br />

interactions and hazy banality.<br />

Kids in LA is due out May 24 on Splendour and Kisses will be touring this summer in support<br />

of the new <strong>LP</strong>.<br />

ASG emerge from the sandy shores of North Carolina to deliver their fourth full length<br />

At a time when most female singer-songwriters perform as alter egos, Eleanor Friedberger<br />

is simply, refreshingly herself. And that’s just the way her fans like it. Having spent<br />

the last decade fronting the indie-rock institution The Fiery Furnaces (currently on hiatus)<br />

with her brother Matthew, in 2011 she emerged as a formidable solo artist with Last<br />

Summer, a thoughtfully crafted tale of memory and place couched in the organic pop of her<br />

‘70s idols. Instantly, Friedberger established herself as a modern-day heir to the tradition of<br />

Donovan, Todd Rundgren, Ronnie Lane, and their ilk: warm, nuanced, timeless songs.<br />

No gimmicks necessary.<br />

The title of Friedberger’s sophomore album is Personal Record, and it is, in a sense.<br />

Personal, that is. But not personal in the way of, say, a coming-of-age record, or a diary<br />

about the past, which Last Summer was. Many of the songs seem to be about love, or love<br />

lost, but whether any of the experience is hers or someone else’s, she isn’t saying. “It’s not<br />

as specific a narrative this time,” she says. “There’s a universality to it.” So incisive are the<br />

lyrics, in fact, that Friedberger’s bassist incorrectly assumed that two of the songs were<br />

about him. “I loved that,” she says. “I want him to feel like the songs are about him. I want<br />

you to feel like the songs are about you.”<br />
