N Documentairemaker Manu Riche kennen
we van zijn rake reportages over de
gewone man in het RTBF-programma
Strip-Tease, en van de soms ontluisterende
portretten van de ‘high and mighty’ in
de reeks Hoge Bomen. Zijn fascinatie voor
de figuur van Raymond Goethals is het
vertrekpunt voor de KVS-productie Raymond,
meteen ook de eerste theaterregie
voor Riche.
De jonge Brusselse auteur Thomas Gunzig
schrijft de nieuwe theatertekst, een monoloog
waarin hij zijn eigen ‘Raymond’ creeert.
Of in de woorden van Gunzig zelf: “Ik
heb altijd al willen weten hoe mensen met
een ‘grote toekomst’ zijn, vóór ze die ‘grote
toekomst’ meemaken. Ik heb altijd al willen
weten welke kleine verhalen er verborgen
zitten in de grote. Een paar kleinigheden,
wat prullen over het leven. Het verhaal van
een oude man, een legende, eerder dood
dan levend, die probeert te begrijpen hoe
men wordt wat men is…”
Josse De Pauw, meester in het vertolken
van de grote kleine man – of omgekeerd,
brengt Gunzigs verhaal tot leven.

F Le génie du documentariste de Manu
Riche s’exprimait déjà clairement à travers
ses reportages sur le citoyen lambda
pour Strip-Tease, de la RTBF, et ses
portraits pour le moins dérangeants des
riches et puissants dans la série Hoge Bomen.
Sa fascination pour le personnage
de Raymond Goethals est le point de départ
d’une production du KVS, intitulée
Raymond. C’est aussi la première mise en
scène au théâtre pour Riche.
Thomas Gunzig, jeune auteur bruxellois,
aussi plébiscité que polyvalent, signe pour
l’occasion un nouveau texte ; un monologue
où il crée son propre ‘Raymond’. Ou pour
citer Gunzig : « Je me suis toujours demandé
qui étaient les gens qui ont connu
un ‹ grand destin › avant de connaître ce
grand destin. Je me suis toujours demandé
quelles étaient les petites histoires qui
se cachaient derrière les grandes. C’est
ça. Quelques brols sur la vie. L’histoire
d’un vieux bonhomme, une légende, plus
mort que vif, qui essaie de comprendre
comment on devient ce qu’on est. » Josse
De Pauw, qui interprète avec maestria le
grand petit homme – ou l’inverse – donne
vie au récit de Gunzig.
E We are familiar with the documentary-maker
Manu Riche for his telling film
reports on the ordinary man in the RTBF
television programme Strip-Tease, and for
his sometimes shockingly revealing portraits
of the high and mighty in the Hoge
Bomen series. The starting point for the
KVS production Raymond, which is also
Riche’s first venture as a stage director,
is his fascination for the football legend
Raymond Goethals. This new play is written
by Thomas Gunzig, a young, well-read
and versatile author from Brussels; it is a
monologue in which he creates his own
‘Raymond’. Or, to put it in his own words:
‘I have always wanted to know who those
people were who had a ‘great destiny’ even
before it arrived. I have always wanted to
know what little tales lay hidden inside the
big story. A few oddments, bits and pieces
of life. The story of an old man, a legend,
more dead than alive, who is trying to understand
how one becomes what one is…’
Josse De Pauw – a master in portraying the
big little man (or vice versa) – brings Gunzig’s
story to life.
