west bank walls
Hun
dood wordt verheerlijkt, de postercultuur maakt er
publieke helden van. Maar hoe langer zo’n poster
ophangt, hoe meer hij te lijden krijgt. Dat is het moment
waarop Sander Buyck zijn lens scherpstelt.
Afgebleekt, uitgeregend, aangevreten, gescheurd,
starre held weer materie, eindig, vergankelijk.
* A Prior Magazine #22 bevat reproducties van West Bank
E During a journey through Palestine, the young
Ghent photographer Sander Buyck became fascinated
by the posters showing martyrs that adorned
the walls of towns in the Occupied Territories.
These martyrs are all those who have fallen victim
to the Israeli occupation: men, women, children.
Their deaths are glorified and the poster culture
makes them public heroes. But the longer a poster
hangs on a wall, the more it suffers. This is the
point when Sander Buyck takes his photo. Faded,
rained on, eroded, torn, sprayed with graffiti, the
picture of the staring hero again becomes just matter,
finite and perishable.
* A Prior Magazine #22 contains reproductions of West Bank
Walls, as well as another project by Sander Buyck. It will be
on sale at the KVS reception during the exhibition.
on love anD other lanDscapes
N De Palestijnse fotograaf Yazan Khalili is pas dertig
On love and other landscapes werd oorspronkelijk
aanwezigheid. On love and other landscapes is een
atlas of the conflict
Keffiyeh / Made in China hangen we een aantal
Les photographies de On love and other landscapes
devaient au départ être rassemblées dans un livre ;
disparue. On love and other landscapes est
Keffiyeh / Made in China sont complétées par
l’affichage de plusieurs agrandissements de cartes
extraites de Atlas of the Conflict, un remarquable
atlas réalisé par l’architecte israélien Malkit Shoshan
et publié dernièrement chez 010 Publishers
(Amsterdam).
E The Palestinian photographer Yazan Khalili is
only just thirty but has already established a solid
reputation. The Venice Biennale (2009) is more than
reference enough, but Landscape of Darkness at
Transit in Mechelen last year also made quite an impression.
On love and other landscapes was originally conceived
as a book, but at the KVS it will take the form
of an exhibition. It reads like a photographic novel
comprising 91 photos of Palestinian landscapes
‘traversed’ by a caption which, sentence by sentence,
photo by photo, tells the story of a failed love affair.
It is one big masquerade on the part of the photographer
so as not to have to look at what is most striking:
the ugliness of the occupation and the abomination
that is the Wall. The photos in this series are
records of an anticipated loss, a deleted presence.
On love and other landscapes is a road movie permeated
with the blues of an occupied land.
E To accompany the two exhibitions and the production
Keffiyeh / Made in China, we are hanging up
several enlarged maps from the Atlas of the Conflict,
a superb book of maps by the Israeli architect Malkit
Shoshan recently published by 010 Publishers (Amsterdam).
‘These maps have great social and political
relevance because they show that construction
and destruction have consequences not only for the
landscape, but also for demographic relationships.
By emphasising that spatial interventions are a major
instrument of power in a conflict, the atlas makes
visible the undeniably political role played by architects
and planners.’ (katusha sol at archineD.nl, 10.02.’10)
