N Keffiyeh of kufiya, zo luidt het Arabische
woord voor de ons welbekende ‘Arafatsjaal’,
de zwart-wit geblokte hoofddoek
die uitgroeide tot het symbool van de nationale
strijd van Palestina. Hij vormt het
vertrekpunt van Keffiyeh / Made in China,
een voorstelling die speelt met vooroordelen
en clichés. Over Palestina en Palestijnen,
maar ook over ons.
Op de scène staan 5 Palestijnen en 5 Belgen
van diverse origine, allemaal artiesten maar
niet per se acteurs; Arabier van hier en van
ginder, gelovig of atheïst, muzikant, danser,
schrijver, cultuurwerker, toneelspeler.
Hun heftige ontmoeting vorige zomer in
de Bezette Gebieden spat uiteen in vele
verhalen: van de Belg Saïd die er altijd
door de Israëli’s uitgepikt wordt voor ondervraging,
van Zaina die aan de Belgen
haar liefde voor Nutella verklaart, van Joris
die zich ontpopt tot een gedreven dabkedanser,
van Mohamed die ontdekt dat hij
de enige is die tijdens de ramadan vast, en
even pakkende als verrassende vertellingen
van Ala’a, Yazan, Farah, Kaat, Thomas
en Rimah.
Acteur-auteur Joris Van Den Brande en de
zeer beloftevolle Palestijnse schrijfster
Dalia Taha transformeren die caleidoscoop
van persoonlijke verhalen tot dialogen
die spreken over wat ons allemaal elke
dag aanbelangt.
Keffiyeh / Made in China is een eerste productie
die tot stand komt uit een traject
dat KVS sinds 2007 coördineert, i.s.m.
A.M.Qattan Foundation en les ballets C de
la B. Het is een uitwisseling tussen Palestijnse
en Belgische podiumkunstenaars,
en speelt zich afwisselend af in de Bezette
Gebieden en in Brussel. Regisseur Bart
Danckaert was vanaf het prille begin bij dit
traject betrokken.

F Keffiyeh ou kufiya, c’est le mot arabe
qui désigne le foulard popularisé dans le
monde entier par Yasser Arafat, la coiffe à
damier noir et blanc devenue le symbole de
la lutte nationale palestinienne. Il constitue
le point de départ de Keffiyeh / Made
in China, une représentation jonglant avec
les clichés et les a priori. Sur la Palestine et
les Palestiniens, mais également sur nous.
Cinq Palestiniens et cinq Belges d’origines
diverses occupent la scène. Acteurs occasionnels,
ils sont arabes d’ici et d’ailleurs,
croyants ou athées, musicien, danseur,
écrivain, travailleur culturel, comédien.
Leur confrontation intense l’été dernier
dans les Territoires occupés se polarise
autour de nombreux récits, tels ceux du
Belge Saïd régulièrement repéré par les
Israéliens afin d’être interrogé, de Zaina
qui avoue aux Belges son faible pour le
Nutella, de Joris qui se révèle être un danseur
expert en dabké, de Mohamed qui découvre
qu’il est le seul à pratiquer le jeûne
pendant le Ramadan, sans parler des histoires
aussi passionnantes qu’étonnantes
de Ala’a, Yazan, Farah, Kaat, Thomas et
Rimah.

la très prometteuse écrivaine palestinienne
Dalia Taha transforment ce caléidoscope
de récits personnels en dialogues
sur des sujets qui nous concernent
tous au quotidien.
Keffiyeh / Made in China est une première
production née du parcours que le KVS
coordonne depuis 2007 en collaboration
avec A.M. Qattan Foundation et les ballets
C de la B. Il s’agit d’un échange entre
artistes de la scène palestiniens et belges,
qui se tient alternativement dans les Territoires
occupés et à Bruxelles. Le metteur
en scène Bart Danckaert est impliqué
dans ce projet depuis le début.
E Keffiyeh or kufiya, that is the Arab word
for what we are familiar with as the ‘Arafat
scarf’, the black and white checked headscarf
that has developed into a symbol
of Palestine’s national struggle. It is the
starting point for Keffiyeh / Made in China,
a production that plays around with prejudices
and clichés about Palestine and the
Palestinians, and also about ourselves.
There are five Palestinians and five Belgians
of various origins on stage, all artists
but not necessarily actors; Arabs
from here and there, believer and atheist,
musician, dancer, writer, cultural worker
and actor.
Their intense encounter in the Occupied
Territories last summer explodes in a mass
of stories: about the Belgian Saïd, whom
the Israelis always pick out for questioning,
about Zaina who declares her love for Nutella
to the Belgians, Joris, who emerges as
an enthusiastic dabke dancer, Mohamed,
who discovers that he is the only one who
fasts during Ramadan, and equally captivating
and surprising stories from Ala’a,
Yazan, Farah, Kaat, Thomas and Rimah.

and the very promising Palestinian writer
Dalia Taha transform this kaleidoscope of
personal stories into dialogues about the
things that concern us every day.
Keffiyeh / Made in China is the first production
to emerge from a project that the KVS
has been coordinating since 2007 in association
with the A.M. Qattan Foundation
and les ballets C de la B. It is an exchange of
Palestinian and Belgian performing artists
and takes place alternately in the Occupied
Territories and in Brussels. The director
Bart Danckaert was involved in this project
from the very beginning.
