N In Barakstad laat acteur-regisseur Guy
Dermul, samen met Nico Sturm en David
Dermez, drie verschillende perspectieven
op armoede met elkaar botsen. Eerst en
vooral komt de betreurde cultauteur JMH
Berckmans aan bod, die met veel zelfspot
over zijn eigen lotgevallen als kansarme
aan de rand van de samenleving schreef.
Daarnaast wordt geplukt uit de schotschriften
van Patrick Declerck, een antropoloog
en psychoanalyticus die jarenlang
met daklozen werkte en geregeld publiceerde
over hun schrijnende toestand. De
laatste in de rij is Theodore Dalrymple. De
controversiële Britse psychiater is van
mening dat “onze verzorgingsstaat de onderklasse
heeft doodgesubsidieerd”. Als
tegengewicht voor het verbale vuurwerk is
er de muziek – een compositie van Kaat De
Windt live uitgevoerd door het Ictus Strijkkwartet
en drummer Han Bennink – die
een heel andere zeggingskracht heeft.

armoede een houw in elk mens, voorbij alle

armoede kan in vele vallen trappen. Maar

F Dans Barakstad (Bidonville), l’acteur et
metteur en scène Guy Dermul, en lice avec
Nico Sturm et David Dermez, provoque la
collision de trois perspectives différentes
sur la pauvreté. C’est d’abord le tour du
regretté auteur culte JMH Berckmans, qui
a écrit avec beaucoup d’autodérision sur
les déboires de son existence précaire en
marge de la société. Ensuite, il est prélevé
librement dans la prose percutante
de Patrick Declerck, un anthropologue et
psychanalyste qui a travaillé pendant des
années avec les sans-abri et à qui l’on doit
de nombreuses publications sur leur misérable
condition. Le dernier à passer est
Theodore Dalrymple. Le psychiatre britannique
controversé est d’avis que « notre
état-providence a tué la classe défavorisée
à coups de subventions ». En contrepoint
à ces explosions verbales, la musique
– une composition de Kaat De Windt
interprétée live par le Ictus String Quartet
et le percussionniste Han Bennink –
donne à entendre une tout autre voix et de
tout autres accords.

l’interprétation de sa vie. Il fait de la pauvreté
une entaille dans chaque individu, loin de tous
les clichés. Car un spectacle de théâtre sur la
pauvreté peut tomber dans bien des pièges.
Mais avec Barakstad, le KVS nous livre, une fois

E In Barakstad (Bidonville), the actor and
director Guy Dermul, together with Nico
Sturm and David Dermez, throw three different
perspectives on poverty into the
ring together. First and foremost, it deals
with the late and lamented cult author JMH
Berckmans, who wrote with a great deal of
self-mockery about his own fortunes as a
deprived person living on the fringes of society.
Apart from this, there is a selection
from the pamphlets of Patrick Declerck, an
anthropologist and psychoanalyst who for
many years worked with the homeless and
regularly published work describing their
desperate situation. Last in line is Theodore
Dalrymple. The controversial British
psychiatrist believes that ‘our welfare state
has subsidised the lower classes to death’.
Counterbalancing the verbal fireworks, is
the music – a composition by Kaat De Windt
performed live by the Ictus String Quartet
and drummer Han Bennink – which has a
very different expressive power.

performance of his life. He makes poverty
a gash in everyone’s face, beyond all cliché.
Because there are lots of traps a play about
poverty can fall into. But it is precisely with
Barakstad that KVS gives us yet another hit.’
