and friends of Richard F. Gill at 

the Homecoming football game to 

witness the unveiling of the Richard F. 

Gill Cub Stadium. The presentation 

included dignitaries from LSU, 

University Laboratory School, Shaw 

Inc. and the entire Richard Gill family. 

Standing at mid-field wearing Richard 

Gill’s University High football number, 

#51, the Gill family watched as their 

husband, father, and grandfather was 

honored. Members of the family included Jean Gill, wife of Richard Gill; Cindy Gill Neal ’87, daughter 

of Richard and Jean, her husband Paul Neal, and their son Garrett Neal ’08; Cathy Gill Cronin ’89, 

daughter of Richard and Jean, her husband David Cronin, and their children Elizabeth, Caroline, and 

Anna Catherine; Cristin Gill Viguerie ’91, daughter of Richard and Jean, her husband Matt Viguerie, and 

their children Hayden who is currently enrolled in first grade at U-High, Dylan, and Jack; and Ricky 

Gill ’94, son of Richard and Jean, and his wife Tori Wackham Gill. The Gill family is comprised of four 

generations of Cubs. Richard’s mother, Sara Stone Gill was a 1936 graduate of University High. 

Richard graduated from U-High in 1961. While attending U-High, Richard was a member of Key Club 

and U-Club. He also ran track, played football, and was Stage Manager for the Senior Class’ production 

of “Charley’s Aunt.” He was a very active alumnus, serving over a decade as chairman of various 

committees at U-High, including Dad’s Club Raffle, Century Club, Dad’s Club, and Charter Member of 

the University Laboratory School Foundation. It was U-High’s honor in 2000, to induct Richard into 

U-High’s Hall of Distinction. Richard once said, “My year’s at University High gave me my foundation 

for the rest of my life and was the beginning of my love affair with LSU.” 

After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master’s degree in Business Administration from LSU, 

Richard became an avid supporter of LSU and its athletic program. He was elected into the LSU Business 

School Hall of Distinction in 2002, the LSU School of Construction Management Hall of Fame in 1998, 

the LSU Alumni Hall of Fame in 1997 and the LSU Athletic Hall of Distinction in 1993. Most recently, 

Richard was named MBA Alumnus of the Year by the LSU Business School. As an alumnus, Richard 

played an implemental role in the Tiger Athletic Foundation, serving as a board member, an executive 

committee member, as well as the Foundation’s president. 

An active member of both the Baton Rouge and Charlotte, N.C., communities, Richard served on 

the Governor’s New Orleans Superdome Renovation Commission and other state entities. He was a 

longtime member of the Baton Rouge Area Chamber, the United Way and a score of other nonprofit 

organizations. Richard is a former president of the Baton Rouge Country Club, Rotary Club and City 

Club and was a member of The Chapel on the Campus. In North Carolina, he served as a Teach for 

America board member.

Happy Holidays! On behalf of the faculty and administration, it 

is a pleasure to welcome you to another issue of the Cub Roar. I 

believe you will find that this issue, like our past issues, points to 

another year of steady growth for our school’s foundation. The 

hard working board, under the stewardship of Chairman Keith 

Armstrong, and development director, Mila Sexton, has led a number 

of renewed initiatives that have brought high levels of excellence to 

the cub community. However, none of this is possible without our 

exceptional faculty or the generosity of our parents, grandparents, 

and alumni. Every student is exposed to a challenging education 

providing intellectual and personal growth. 

As we enter the holiday season, here is a brief status report in various 

areas of the school: 

Academics 

Michelle Blanchard received the 2010 Eve Proffitt Emerging Leaders 

Project Grant from the PDK Educational Foundation. 

Steven Babcock, High School Biology instructor, was 1 of the 

24 teachers chosen by the Toyota International Teacher Program 

to travel to the Galapagos Islands to conduct field investigations 

designed by University High Environmental Science students. 

Jennifer Bevill, High School Technology Instructor, recently 

received the Doris Duke Scholarship. The scholarship covers the 

cost of a Science, Technology, and Math (STEM) online course. 

Mrs. Bevill will engage in collaborative projects with educators/ 

students in Middle Eastern Countries. 

Barbara Benton, 7th grade RWW instructor, was recently chosen 

to serve on the 6th-8th grade Louisiana Young Readers’ Choice 

Award committee for the next three years. 

Emily Tarver, High School English II instructor, defended her 

doctoral dissertation in the fall and is now Dr. Emily Tarver. 

Deana Tullier, Middle School Math instructor, recently completed 

her National Board Certification. The Laboratory School has one 

of the highest ratios of National Board Certified Teachers. 

Barbara Benton, Emily Tarver and Deana Tullier celebrate their recent accomplishments. 

The ACT scores for the Class of 2010 arrived and the composite 

score for the class was 24.4, an increase of .2% over the 2009 composite 

scores. The Louisiana High School average is 20.1% 

In May 2010 the International Baccalaureate Certificate students 

and Diploma candidates took their external assessments and were 

graded by assessors all over the world. Two thirds of our students 

exceeded the world average. 

Newsweek Magazine recently 

ranked the Laboratory School 

464 out of 1600 high schools 

in the country. The Laboratory 

School jumped 200 spots from 

last year’s list. 

Foundation 

Over $6,500,000 in gifts and 

pledges for the capital campaign 

Over $305,000 in gifts and pledges 

to the 2011 annual appeal 

Over $300,000 awarded for special 

project and programs 

Athletics 

Football Team wrapped up a successful campaign with a 7-5 record 

and advanced to the second round of the class 2A playoffs 

Girls Swim Team received their 5th State Championship 

Boys Swim Team finished 4th at State 

Volleyball Girls completed their standout season and advanced to 

the quarter final round of the State Tournament 

Both Cross Country Teams finished 5th at State 

Facilities 

The ditch is COMPLETED! Covering the ditch has accomplished 

several purposes. It has removed a significant safety 

concern for our students while providing over 5 acres of much 

needed green space for student activity. Additionally, covering 

the ditch has protected the integrity of the surrounding building’s 

foundations. 

January brings the beginning of one of the most awaited projects for 

the Lab School, the construction of the concession and restrooms at 

the Cub Complex. 

The new multi-purpose gymnasium will be completed in early 

February. This facility will serve as the competition volleyball and 

basketball location and will seat approximately 850 people in athletic 

configuration. It will have the capacity to host events such as 

school assemblies, school plays, choir performances and the like. 

When used in this capacity, the facility will house another 250 

patrons via an extendable set of bleachers housed in one end zone. 

We look forward to hosting this year’s Grandparent and Grand 

Friends Day in our new facility. 

Next on the construction agenda are the renovations for the band 

and choir rooms and the court yard improvements in the immediate 

area. 

While buildings and facilities are important, they are not the soul 

of the school. It’s the people affiliated with our school that provide 

both the history and the destiny. As we move forward, I pledge to 

continue making every effort to capture the essence of what the Lab 

School has been and to insure its bright future.

Richard Gill was a top executive with The Shaw Group and an 

influential leader within the Baton Rouge and LSU community. He 

served as president of the Power Group with more than 30 years of 

experience in the industrial construction and maintenance industry. 

He joined The Shaw Group in 1997 when the company acquired 

Merit Industrial Constructors Inc., of which Richard was the founder 

and president. He was Shaw’s executive vice president and chief 

operating officer as well as president of Stone & Webster Inc., a Shaw 

subsidiary, before being named head of Shaw Power in 2004. Heavily 

involved in the business community, Richard worked with numerous 

associations, including the national, state, and local Associated 

Builders and Contractors. He served as a longtime national ABC 

board member and he was honored as Member of the Year by both 

the state and Pelican chapters. He held leadership roles in the Young 

President’s Organization, which named him Who’s Who Nationally in 

Engineering and Construction every year since 1995. 

Richard’s dedication to the University Laboratory School will be 

cherished by future generations of Cubs. This dedication provided 

an opportunity to honor the legacy of Richard Gill and his support 

of University High. The University Laboratory School Foundation 

thanks the Gill family, the Shaw Group and all of the wonderfully 

generous friends of Richard Gill for giving so generously.

Rumfellow was also honored 

during a special half-time 

presentation at mid-field where 

she was surrounded by some of 

her beloved students. 

CUB COMMUNITY RECOGNIZES 

DOT RUMFELLOW'S 42 YEARS OF SERVICE 

Mrs. Rumfellow displayed 

leadership, knowledge, and 

compassion during her 42 years as an 

educator. She gave unselfishly during the 

twelve years she dedicated to the University 

Laboratory School as she helped move the 

Elementary Division to 5-star status under 

the State Accountability Plan. She also 

expanded the Elementary Division by 312 

students and 28 staff members in one year, 

while implementing a Community Service 

Program for the Elementary Division. The 

University Laboratory School, under Mrs. 

Rumfellow’s instruction, has had instructors 

named Presidential Award Winner, National 

Elementary Physical Education Teacher of 

the Year, Louisiana Teacher of the Year 

Winner, and the Milliken Family Foundation 

Award Winner. Mrs. Rumfellow has hosted 

fifteen educators from China and has also 

served as host and presenter to fifteen new

has been an exceptional contributor to not 

only the University Laboratory School but 

to the surrounding community as well.

with Dr. Smith honoring Mrs. Rumfellow 

with a personally engraved Boston Rocker. 

Mrs. Elizabeth Phillips and Mrs. Sylvia 

Duke, representing the Grandparents 

Club, presented Mrs. Rumfellow with 

flowers; and the Faculty presented her 

with a U-High jersey symbolizing her 

42 years of service to education. As 

Mrs. Rumfellow exited the field, she left 

her title of administrator and graciously 

accepted the honor of being the newest 

member of the Grandparents’ Club.

The Cubs Alumni Celebration ceremony was held on August 

28, at the City Club of Baton Rouge. Inductees included Collis 

Temple III ’98, Athletic Hall of Fame; Scott Wharton ’87, Athletic 

Hall of Fame; Brett Furr ’79, Alumni Hall of Distinction; and William 

Norris ’51, Alumni Hall of Distinction. Approximately 150 guests were 

in attendance and enjoyed cocktails and hors d’œuvres while visiting 

on the veranda prior to the ceremony. University Laboratory School 

Foundation Chair Keith Armstrong ’83 served as emcee for the event. 

Collis Temple III ’98’s accomplishments while at U-High included 

earning letters in both cross country and basketball, obtaining a 

prestigious McDonald’s All-American nomination, and being awarded a 

full scholarship to LSU. Collis was also an excellent student, graduating 

from LSU in 3 years. The accomplishments Collis earned and the life 

lessons he was taught while at U-High, carried over into his adult life. 

He is currently Regional Vice-President for Primerica Financial Services. 

Scott Wharton ’87 was an outstanding student-athlete at U-High. 

He was a 4-year letterman in football and earned a full football 

scholarship to LSU. While at LSU, he not only excelled on the field 

but was also on the Dean’s List and a member of Omicron Delta 

Kappa, Mortar Board, and Leadership LSU. Scott graduated from LSU 

Medical School in 1992 and is now a specialist in Internal Medicine 

with the Baton Rouge Clinic. 

Brett Furr ’79 was an exceptional student at U-High. He was involved 

with the student body and played both basketball and football for

U-High. Upon his graduation, Brett earned his Bachelor of Science 

from LSU in 1983 and J.D. from LSU Law School in 1986. Brett’s love 

for U-High is apparent as he, and fellow alumni Richard Lipsey ’57, 

co-chaired the first ever Capital Campaign in U-High history, which 

has raised over six million dollars to date. He also serves on many 

other boards throughout the Baton Rouge community and is currently 

a partner with Taylor, Porter, Brooks & Phillips, Manager of Indigo 

Properties, and Managing Principal of Delphi Oil. 

William Norris ’51 was a well-rounded student at U-High. He 

competed in HI-Y and was a member of the Student Council. William 

continued to excel after graduating from U-High, receiving a Bachelor 

of Arts in Divinity from Union Theological Seminary and a Ph.D. in 

Communication from the University of Southern California. William 

spent twenty years with the Presbyterian Church and thirty years 

in the telecommunications industry. Most recently, he authored a 

children’s book and worked for Operation HOPE, Inc. He is active 

in the preservation of the French Quarter, where he resides, and also 

provides historic tours. 

Congratulations to the 2010 inductees of the University Laboratory 

School Alumni Hall of Distinction and Athletic Hall of Fame! Your 

accomplishments make the Cub Community proud!

Thanks to support from the Foundation, 

University Lab School students are getting a 

top quality science instruction and a chance to 

make an impact. When we needed environmental 

monitoring equipment to gauge the quality of the 

campus lakes the Foundation responded. Now 

we are able to post reliable data on the World 

Water Monitoring Day website and compare our 

results with students from all over the world. 

When we wanted to respond to the destruction of 

coastal forests by hurricanes Katrina and Rita the 

Foundation came through with a generous grant that allowed us to build 

a native plant nursery and fund annual tree planting expeditions. 

This support has also had a great impact on me professionally as 

well. Because of the opportunities I can offer my students I have been 

able to make a strong contribution to my field through presentations and 

curriculum development. Now I am poised to travel to the Galapagos 

Islands as part of the Toyota International Teacher Program. While 

there I will be conducting field investigations designed by my students. 

None of this would be possible without the generous support of the cub

Philippe Cousteau, the grandson of Captain Jacques-Yves 

Cousteau, recently visited the Laboratory School and spoke 

with the middle and high School students about his work. 

As a member of the legendary Cousteau family, Philippe is continuing 

the work of his father through Earth Echo International, the non- 

profit organization he founded with his sister and mother, where he 

serves as CEO. 

School 4th graders 

recently participated 

in Pat’s Coats for Kids and on 

November 18th packed the pod 

at the College Drive Walmart with 

over 80 coats for needy children. 

Coats for Kids is a community 

service project sponsored by 

WBRZ channel 2 and, on-air 

personality, Pat Shingleton. This 

project provided an opportunity 

for the 4th grade students to 

learn about community service 

and how they can help others in 

need. 

Joanna Faerber was invited by Amelia Lee, Ph.D. Professor 

Emeritus, Department of Kinesiology LSU, as a guest author 

of Moving and Learning: Elementary Physical Education for 

the Future to be published by the Higher Education Press in China. 

This is a text book that will be used by university professors to 

prepare future teachers for instruction in physical education in 

China. Joanna wrote model lessons and plans for the chapters on 

Beginning the School Year and Developing Movement Competence. 

The US authors and scholars will travel to China October 26, 2011 

to present research and best practices to China National College 

TiYu, Department of Education of Jiangsu Province, Beijing Sport 

University, and Beijing Normal University.

Congratulations to Lab School 

Senior, Steve Monk! Steve 

scored a perfect 2400 on the 

June administration of the SAT. On any 

given test date, 300,000 students across 

the country take the SAT. Of that 300,000, 

fewer than 1% are perfect scores. Steve 

is an International Baccalaureate Diploma 

candidate with a 4.0+ grade point average 

and is also a varsity letterman in football, basketball, and baseball.

TAILGATE REUNION CELEBRATION 

The University Laboratory School Office of Alumni Relations 

sponsored the 11th Annual Alumni Tailgate Reunion 

Celebration prior to the Cubs’ Homecoming football game 

versus Dunham. Over 100 guests came out for the annual celebration 

and included U-High alumni and their families. Alumni were 

greeted by volunteers handing out U-High Alumni water bottles, 

compliments of the University Laboratory School Foundation. 

All alumni and guests enjoyed jambalaya, provided by Roberto’s, 

and drinks, contributed by Baton Rouge Coca-Cola. There was an 

abundance of entertainment thanks to The Balloon Man; the Party 

Artist and Junior Varsity Cheerleaders, who painted faces; and 

Connor Adamek ’06, who was the DJ for the event. 

After the tailgate, alumni and their families received complimentary 

tickets to the football game where the Cubs went on to celebrate 

another victory against the Dunham Tigers.

30th Reunion 

The class of 1990 kicked off its 20 year 

reunion starting on Friday night, June 

11th at Tsunami where everyone had 

a great time reminiscing on the patio. 

Saturday afternoon, alumni and family 

members met at U-High and toured the 

school and enjoyed a picnic style lunch. 

Saturday night, classmates met at Boutins 

for dinner and drinks. It was a great 

weekend with classmates coming from 

as far as California, Michigan, and North 

Carolina. Rob Armstrong, Senior Class 

President, and classmate, Cindy Bowman 

Downs, organized the weekend.

Reunions 

The class of 1980 held its 30 year reunion July 16-18. 

Class vice-president, Jeff Jordan, headed the organizing 

committee and did a terrific job using e-mail and Facebook 

to locate classmates. Friday night’s event was held at 

Boudreaux and Thibodaux’s downtown. Saturday, U-High 

staff provided a tour of the school followed by lunch at 

Walk-On’s. James Manasseh hosted the Saturday night 

event at his beautiful law office, Mannaseh, Gill, & Knipe. 

The weekend concluded with a brunch at Superior Grill. 

Approximately 37 of the 63 class members attended.

Cynthia Landry Sandefer ’94 and her husband 

Shane announce the birth of their third child, 

Collin Thomas. Collin was born September 24, 

2010 and weighed 6lbs. 4oz and was 19 inches 

long. Collin was welcomed home by big sister 

Chloe and big brother Aidan. 

Michael Mann ’09 was recently elected 

President of the Jewish Cultural Organization 

at Millsaps College. Michael is currently in his 

second year at Millsaps. 

Amelia Mann ’06 has been named Assistant 

Program director for Camp Dream Street, in 

Utica, MS, for the Summer 2011 session. Amelia 

graduated from Emory University in May 2010 

and is currently employed with Starmount Life 

Insurance in Baton Rouge. 

Amanda Namie Juneau ’96 was married April 

24, 2010 to Ryan Juneau.

Jeremy Shane Johnson ’06 graduated from 

Stanford University in June 2010 with a BA in 

Political Science with a primary concentration 

in Political Theory. While attending Stanford, 

Jeremy also studied abroad at the University of 

Oxford in Oxford, England. Jeremy is currently 

a first year Law Student and Dean’s Fellow at 

the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 

Philadelphia. 

John Bennett ’03 was sworn into the Peace 

Corps on September 23, 2010. He will be serving 

in Mbuzini, Mpumalanga, South Africa teaching 

English as a second language. John will be 

communicating with Ms. Cynthia Edmonston’s 

high school history class about his experiences 

through the Peace Corps Correspondence Match 

Program. 

Brittney Johnson ’07 was featured in the 

November issue of COBRA Magazine. COBRA 

Magazine’s purpose is to celebrate the success 

of volleyball players of African descent in hopes 

of encouraging African American girls to pursue 

the sport.
