Local culture, taboos and dangers • In general, according to local cultural beliefs and taboos, many of the local people are unwilling to send their daughters to schools, even to the home-based schools that are conducted in safer environments. • We are sure this situation is changing slowly but surely. • The mentality and perceptual horizons of the locals have been changing dramatically. • In some of SHIAO’s more conservative areas they now send their daughters to be trained in health (doctors, midwives) for work in the field. • But it will take time, even decades or centuries, before all the people are ready to send their daughters to attend schools.
