In WA’s high profile dance
competitions Lesmurdie SHS
has gained a reputation as State
Champions. With a number of state
titles already, Lesmurdie SHS’s
preparation is now underway for
this year’s 2010 dance entry into
YOHfest - WA’s biggest youth
performing arts contest. Will we
win? We don’t know, but it will be
fun to give it our best effort.
During lunchtimes students have
been auditioning to be in this year’s
2009
Lesmurdie SHS YOHfest cast.
Auditions were open to all students
and the level of skills displayed were
high, which was not surprising given
the strong dance program at our
school.
Keith Svendsen
Principal
As Semester one draws to a close
there is a high level of activity amongst
staff and students. NAPLAN testing,
examinations, exam marking, course
selection, course counselling and
reporting to parents are a few of the
tasks we have been busy with over the
past few weeks. We are now moving into
the enrolment and time tabling phase for
2011.
As a school community we continue
to see many positive and rewarding
activities and achievements. All of this
assists in making our school a great
school. However we need to maintain
our high expectations of performance
and behaviour. Recently there have
been a small but significant number of
students leaving the school grounds
during the day. This is, of course, highly
inappropriate. It also places students
in an unsafe situation as we are unable
to supervise them. Recent incidents
reported in the media highlight the need
for students to remain on school grounds
at all times during the school day. On
late start Friday some students are
arriving at school and then walking to the
Sanderson Rd shops. We have rostered
on staff to ensure students remain on
school grounds once they have arrived. I
would appreciate parents discussing this
with your son/daughter to support this.
With the colder weather upon us some
students are wearing items of clothing
that are not part of the parent-endorsed
school uniform. Please ensure that
students are in appropriate school
dress each day. Most students proudly
wear the Lesmurdie SHS uniform and it
assists staff in duty supervision to ensure
there are no individuals from outside our
school community on school grounds.
Things got a little absurd in the Lesmurdie
Performing Arts Centre on the night of
April 30, when upper school Drama
students presented scenes from Tom
Stoppard’s strange but hilarious play
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead.
One of the prime examples of Theatre
of the Absurd, Stoppard’s play took two
minor characters from Shakespeare’s
Hamlet and thrust them into the spotlight.
Childhood friends of Hamlet, Rosencrantz
and Guildenstern were called on to
determine what was troubling the Danish
Prince - who seemed a little upset that
his father had been murdered and that
the murderer was ‘shacked’ up with
his mother, in the process stealing the
throne.
But the pair were far from ideal detectives
- in fact, most of the time they seemed
unsure of where they were, who they
were and what they were meant to be
doing.
The only thing that was certain was that
by night’s end they’d both be dead.
Thanks go to Mr Markovic and his Visual
Arts students for producing props and
Mr Newland for lending assistance on
the night but most of all to the Drama
students for their dedication to producing
a great night of theatre.
Students are now hard at work on their
next production, Face to Face - which
takes us away from the absurd to the
heights of Australian Realism.
SCIENCE YOUTH FORUM EXCURSION
Two Year 10 LEAP Science students,
Nabaa Samnakay and Semra Candemir,
attended the 2010 Science Youth Forum
at the Government House of Western
Australia.
This was a unique occasion for
students to discuss Youth, Science
and Sustainability. In addition students
listened to some prominent guest
speakers.
Professor Lyn Beazley, the Chief Scientist
of Western Australia facilitated the event
which involved more than 150 Year 10-12
students from various WA High Schools.
Governor of WA His Excellency Dr Ken
Michael AC hosted the Forum.
Issues concerning the use of Australian
resources and sustainability were
discussed by the students. Their ideas
were recorded as part of a group response
of “WA’s Youth”. This information was
then passed onto the Governor of WA,
and the Chief Scientist of WA.
The Governor’s Science Forums provide
an opportunity to discuss topical issues of
scientific importance and to communicate
a better understanding and appreciation
of science within the community. The
theme of the Governor’s Science Forums
was ‘Science Communication and the
Community’.
The forum was an opportunity for young
people, our leaders of tomorrow, to
discuss with their peers, their views on
Congratulations to the following students
for gaining a place in the School of
The School of Instrumental Music
services over 400 WA schools, providing
consultancy, instrumental instruction and
ensemble direction.
the topics of science and sustainability.
There were two principal objectives of
the Forum: the first to hear viewpoints of
young people in relation to sustainability
and science; the second to promote
science as a rewarding and enjoyable
study and career option.
Guest speakers and their topics were:
Professor Beazley;
gave an informative and enjoyable
introduction and overview of the topic of
sustainability;
Mr Dustin Stuart, Rhodes Scholar;
chose to speak on the topic of The
Sustainability of India and provided
LOCAL ART TALENT ON EXHIBITION
After workshops over eight weeks, five
also be shown in Kalamunda.
SUPERHEROES
Left: Corie Gray and Tabatha Bennett take
a well earned break during the ride, while
Leto Gunter wonders what went wrong after
attempting ‘Dead Man’s Descent’.
The Munda Biddi Mountain Biking Trail
was the setting for the Outdoor Education
Class’s assessment.
The class had worked hard during
the semester preparing for the trip by
learning skills about riding technique and
bike maintenance.
The trail offered a variety of challenging
uphills and exhilarating downhill sections
amongst some stunning Australian
scenery.
Some students decided to experience
that scenery closer than others, by flying
with style (i.e. falling) from their bikes!
The best aerodynamic horizontal landing
award (i.e. stack!) went to Amrita Bryce
for her efforts on Dead Man’s Descent.
The speed at which she got back up and
on the bike is to be commended! It was a
fantastic camp and everyone did a great
job. - Miss White
Superhero art from Mr Newland’s ‘Super 6’ class is currently being showcased at the Lesmurdie SHS Library. The students’
task was to create an image of themselves as a superhero (with an appropriate background) using the website herofactory
and create their art composition using the program Photoshop.
They then completed the assignment by making their image into a comic book cover with a title, publishers mark (Super 6
Graphic Novels), issue number and creator’s name. The task gave the students an opportunity to develop Photoshop skills
(digital media) and show their design abilities. It also gave them an opportunity to imagine themselves in a new and exciting
way with no limits - the best they could be, ever. - Mr Newland

Interschool Sport
Vs Kelmscott SHS
The senior girls soccer team began the year
training hard weekly and getting to know each
other. New members have joined the team as
well as last years junior team members.
With five games to play in the 2010 season the
girls have worked hard. Athough they have
not won yet against Kelmscott and Rehoboth
College, the team is motivated and ready to
conquer in the remaining games.
FOOTBALL
A mixed result was the outcome for the LSHS Year 8/9 football team
competing in the Smarter Than Smoking AFL Cup recently. The side
won one of their three games - unfortunately not enough to proceed
to the next round. In the first match Darling Range Sport College
proved too much for our undermanned team which had to borrow
players from the opposition. A determined Lesmurdie side won game
two against Helena College by 42 points. In the final game a very
strong Mazanod team won by 64 points. Thank you to all players and
staff. - Mr Neates
NETBALL
This year saw a strong turnout for netball. We took four teams
away for the day carnival. All teams played with enthusiasm and
although no teams progressed to the next stage of the competition,
they all put in an exceptional effort. Best players throughout the
day included Shannon Young, Rachael Hollands, Brianna Walker,
Pia Markovic, Rhiannon Burrows, Steph Thornton and Janneke
Markovic. Well done to all the girls and a big thankyou to the
coaches Miss Taylor, Miss Nisbett and Mrs Bell for all their hard
work leading up to and on the day. - Miss White
