Welcome to Sundsvall – The capital of Norrland. Sundsvall is the destination for those 

who want to embellish a holiday to Norrland with shopping and entertainment. It is 

home to Norrland’s largest city mall plus Birsta Shopping Centre, one of Sweden’s largest 

out-of-town retail centres. Nowhere north of the river Dal älven has more life and 

activity. In the midst of the northern countryside, and at the heart of everything, is perhaps 

one of the country’s most beautiful city centres with rich ornate post-renaissance

OF SUNDSVALL 

Once upon a time, Sundsvall was a 

major maritime city. Sundsvall cove 

and the nearby harbours in other 

parts of Sundsvall bay were lined by 

sawmills and loading wharves and 

its harbour basin was the centre for 

trade and stevedoring, bustling with 

vessels for loading and unloading, 

and passenger boats. Today, 

Sundsvall remains an important 

trading venue, but in another sense, 

Norrlands shopping and entertainment 

metropolis.

STRIKE MEMORIAL 

A memorial to the labour movement. 

In 1879, workers went on strike to 

protest 25 % pay cuts – in a much 

more striking way than in other

45 VÄNGÅVAN PARK 

Vängåvan is a park in the heart of 

Sundsvall, featuring a beautiful 

fountain designed by Sofia Gisberg, 

which was in place two years before 

the great fire of 1888.

The city of Sundsvall is invaded by 

dragons in the summer. Placed in 

various locations, 30 dragon statues 

create a colourful and exciting outdoor 

art exhibition in the city.

Sundsvall, where enamel plaques

The shopping metropolis of Sundsvall 

has Norrland’s biggest shopping 

centre. You’ll find all the chain stores 

on the high street, Storgatan, as

After a devastating fire in 1888, the 

city of Sundsvall was rebuilt in stone 

with pinnacles, towers and distinctive

COASTAL ROAD 

A 75 km long road along the Bothnian 

Sea coast, from Mellanfjärden 

in the south to Svartvik in the

together they form a complete destination.

beaches, north Hälsingland’s and 

Medelpad’s oldest fishing villages, 

Medelpad’s last ironworks, an industrial 

memory from the time of the

ICELANDIC HORSES 

Riding tours for everyone in an 

easily ridden industrial community. 

Sörskog Gård is located at a historic 

site in Galtsröm. Galtström is the 

site of Medelpad’s first, largest and 

last ironworks. Lars and Ing-Gun 

Ljungström organise riding tours througout 

the year on Icelandic horses 

that were born and bred in Iceland.

In Nolby, you can visit the remains 

of Njurunda’s oldest church, where 

the foundations of the Qvitsle chapel 

are still partially preserved. The old

12-16 MATFORS AND STÖDE 

There are plenty of activities and 

outdoor adventures to be enjoyed in 

Matfors and Stöde. One of Sweden’s 

best fishing rivers, the Ljungan, runs 

through Matfors. Winter transforms 

Matfors into a snowmobile landscape 

full of great trails to explore. The 

area also has several interesting 

local cultural and historical sites.

A cairn-like pile of stones where 

legend has it the giant Starkotter was 

buried after being killed by lightning.

Birsta Retail Park straddles the E4 

motorway seven kilometres north of 

Sundsvall. This is where the world’s 

fourth IKEA store was built. Alongside

Sweden’s best shopping centre by 

Market magazine.

Alnö is a volcanic island created 

about 570 million years ago just 

outside of Sundsvall. On the 

island, you can find species of rock 

and minerals that do not occur 

elsewhere in Sweden.

This homestead museum is located 

near the Old Alnö Church. There´s 

also a sawmill museum, stone exhibition

HABITATS 

Alnö with its unique bedrock supports 

a rich flora. There are eight 

geological habitats on the northern 

side of the island. All are signposted.

27 ALNÖ OLD CHURCH 

Medelpad’s oldest preserved church, 

on the island of Alnö, is from the 

late 12th century. It features artistic 

treasures and frescoes from the 16th

The church was erected in 1896 in 

neogothic style, according to blueprints 

by F Boberg. A particularly 

interesting feature is the wooden 

baptismal font dating from the 1100s, 

which was moved from the old

Try tandem parachuting with an 

experienced instructor after a brief

29 SPIKARNA FISHING 

VILLAGE 

The Spikarna fishing village on Alnö 

still has much of its old characteristic 

environment, with fishermen’s 

cottages, seaside shacks, a chapel 

and a pilot station. Café. 

30 – 37 INDALSLEDEN 

Indalsälven and its valley is one of 

the country’s most beautiful river 

valleys. A holiday trip becomes a 

discovery among steep river banks, 

forests, water and breathtaking 

views. Vast areas of wilderness offer 

excellent fishing, orchid tours, berry 

and mushroom picking, hiking trails, 

nature trails and nature reserves 

with a vast richness of species. Look 

closely at the old rural culture, museums, 

nature centres and ancient 

monuments. Adventure and activities 

such as gold panning, riding tours 

and rafting will add additional spice 

to your visit. For overnight accommodation 

there are hotels, hostels, 

cottages and camp sites.

Here are 60 vintage machines to look 

at, fire up or test drive. The machines 

are from 1901 onwards. Swedish

32 OLD LIDEN CHURCH 

The stone church was built in 1480 by 

Pater Josefus. It features 13thcentury 

objects and 15th-century 

wood sculptures by H Gulleson. This 

is the burial site of Magnus Huss, 

famous for the natural disaster called

33 MOUNT VÄTTABERGET 

The view from Mount Vättaberget 

over the Indalsälven River is said to 

be one of the most photographed 

in Sweden. A place of peace. Old

BRIDGE 

The Högakustenbron bridge over 

the Ångermanälven River is a 

magnificent landmark, with pylons 

standing 180 m above sea level and 

a span of 1,800 metres. The world’s 

ninth-longest suspension bridge.

400 MOUNT HORNÖBERGET 

Mount Hornöberget has a great view 

across the Ångermanälven River and 

is a popular resting place with a play 

area, hotel, restaurant and shops. 

400 HIGH COAST TRAIL 

This hiking trail leads you at an 

elevated height, yet close to the 

coast, through the diverse and 

varying scenery of the Skuleskogen 

National Park and World Heritage 

site. A total length of 130 kilometres 

divided into 13 sections. A guidebook 

is on sale at the tourist offices. 

404 SANDÖBRON BRIDGE 

This was once the world’s longest 

single-abutment bridge, and its 

construction was marred with 

tragedy. Provides a great view of the 

Ångermanälven River. 

404 ÅDALEN CLASSIC 

CAR MUSEUM 

A whole world of beautiful old 

vehicles and machines, including 

a Ford Model T from 1923 and a 

Peugeot CL2, one of only three in 

Sweden. Open in summer.

404 ÅDALEN -31, LUNDE 

Ådalen -31 is Lenny Clarhäll’s 

memorial to the tragedy in Ådalen in 

1931, which became a landmark in 

Swedish labour history. 

405 FRÅNÖHÖGARNA 

This was an Iron-Age farm with a 

harbour in 600–400 B.C. These two 

large mounds are the biggest Iron- 

Age graves in Ångermanland, telling 

us that two important people were 

buried here.

condemned for witchcraft were 

forced to march to Häxberget – Witch

River from Valkallen is enchanting, 

with the High Coast bridge rising

9,600 years ago, the High Coast 

began slowly rising out of the sea. 

The gigantic pressure of the Ice Age 

glacier has left traces - stone rubble 

high up in the mountains where the 

coast once lay, former bays that are 

now lakes, steep slopes dropping 

into the water. Visitor points are

been made accessible. You need 

a torch, practical clothing and a

Sollefteå. About 2 km after Långsele, 

turn right at the power station in Österforse.

senior SEK 300. This is one of the 

finest golf courses in Norrland. Open 

24-hours a day throughout June. The 

course has 18 holes, par 72. Green

609 GRANINGE BRUK, MILL 

The blast furnace and hammer smithy 

were built in 1673, but the timber 

industry later took over. The helve 

hammer, waterwheel and wings of 

the manor house can still be seen.

623 ROCK ART CENTRE 

OF THE NORTH 

Visit the rapids at Nämforsen in the 

river Ångermanälven to see one of 

Northern Europe’s largest and most 

distinctive rock-carving sites. There 

are some 2,300 carved figures and 

lines on the islands of Notön, Brådön 

and Laxön and near-by shores. 

The oldest were engraved into the 

rocks about 6000 years ago. This 

huge collection of rock carvings, 

the unique natural environment 

and the free-flowing rapids in the 

summer months make Nämforsen 

a world-class cultural site. Café, 

information, souvenir shop, guided
