Long John Silver leads mutinous crew.

\M ALT Disney, master of the
animated cartoon, with the
release of h'a new production
"Treasure Island," demonstrates
that he is also capable of building
a fine screen play around a
full cast of real-life actors. Thi*
remarkable film, baaed on Robert
Louis Stevenson's famous adventure
story, opened last week for
the first time on suburban
screens at the Community Theatre,
Morristown.
When Disney acquired the rights
! to Stevenson's classic some 15
years ago, it is said that he first
conceived of the film as a fulllength
animated cartoon feature.
But as the production shaped up,
Disney reversed his thinking and
decided that fleah-and-blood actors
could better portray the
action-packed yarn of pirates and
buried treasure. With the release
of "Treasure Island," Disney shows
his first full-length, non-animated
film.
It would seem unnecessary to go
into detail concerning the story of
"Treasure Island" since it haa been
almost required reading for every
youngster during the past several
generation*. Suffice it to say that
as I lecalled the tale, Disney'*
film version seemed a faithful reproduction
of the original.
The story opens at the Admiral
Benibow Inn, where young Jim
Hawkins (Bobby Driscoil) is given
the map to Captain Flint's burled
treasure after a fearful encounter
with Blind Pew. Jim is hired as
cabin troy on the Hispaniola
which, with the blustering Squire
Tretawney in charge, sets out to
find the hidden doubloons. Aboard
the Hi^anMa is the rascally
Long John Silver (Robert Newton),
ring leader of the motley
crew who are intent upon keeping
the .buried gold for their own
use.
Robert Newton, an outstanding
AND
British character actor, does a
superfo job in creating the character
of the one-legged Long
John. He is a lovable old pirate,
despite his detects, and I am sure
that Stevenson himself would
have been immensely pleased with
Newton's performance. Newton
speaks witn a cockney accent
which adds to the authenticity of
the character and fortunately hia
words are at the same time perfectly
understandable. But perhaps
the most striking characteristic
are Newton's eyes which
speak CLS eloquently as hie lips.
He is a knavish rogue-, and his
eyas sparkle with a marvelous
puckish glee as he alternately
cajoles, barters, threatens and
eventually wins his way to freedom
in a long fcoat on the high
seas. r
I suppose everyone has his own
mental picture of the characters
and settings of 'Treasure Island."
To me, Disney gave back the picture
I had conjured up in my
mind. It was as if I had seen it
all before, the places, character*
and events were old friends; from
the pathetic, tattered Ben Gun,
to the stockade, to the vicious
pirate Hsmei Hands. Disney has
been noted and extremely successful
in recreating the fairy tales of
the past with charming, believalble
animated characters. He has
now accomplished the same result
with real-life actors, although it
wonld be an exaggeration to say
that «ome of the characters in
"Treasure Island" are charming.
The pirates are men with fierce
faces, and who, as the story goes,
do not wince when it comes to
spilling Wood. It might be that
some impressionable youngsters
would he frightened by them. But
adults, I am sure, will be completely
fascinated 'by them.
All this goes by way of saying
that I enjoyed 'Treasure Island"
tremendously. I think you will
too.
