Örnsköldsvik lies in the nor thern par t of the <strong>High</strong> <strong>Coast</strong>. People have lived on this spot since<br />

the Iron Age , and Örnsköldsvik has been a town, officially since 1894, a successful town that<br />

generates an air of contentment. <strong>The</strong> municipality today has 55 000 residents . And it provides<br />

visitors in search of action and adventure with a wide choice of activities . <strong>The</strong> countr yside is<br />

also ver y variable with coastline and cliffs , high land and forests .<br />

D3 SKULESKOGENS NATIONALPARK<br />

Within Skuleskogen national park with its<br />

ravined landscape, natural forest and stone<br />

slabs, the highland meets the sea. Don't<br />

miss Slåttdalsskrevan, a majestic ravine in<br />

Slåttdalsberget. <strong>The</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> trail passes<br />

through the park.<br />

A varying wandering trail through the World<br />

Heritage Site and Skuleskogen national park,<br />

high in the hills and close to the sea. 13<br />

stages between Örnsköldsvik and the <strong>High</strong><br />

tourist offices.<br />

D3 NÄTRA FJÄLLSKOG<br />

<strong>The</strong> recreation area with its trails and high<br />

land pastures bring many visitors to Nätra<br />

Fjällskog all year round.<strong>The</strong> area lies on<br />

the border of Kramfors and Örnsköldsvik<br />

municipalities.<br />

D3 NÄTTERLUNDS KONST<br />

A number of works of art have been installed<br />

in public environments both in and outdoors<br />

in Nätra and Sidensjö. Jonas Nätterlund, who<br />

was born in Drömme, left his estate to Nätra<br />

municipality on his death. <strong>The</strong> Nätterlund<br />

society administers the purchase of art work<br />

in Köpmanholmen with a guided tour of the<br />

Archipelago boat m/f Ulvön traffics the waters<br />

between Ulvön, Trysunda and Strängön<br />

E3 BALESUDDEN NATURE RESERVE<br />

<strong>The</strong> distinctly formed Balesudden forms an<br />

excellent navigation marker for seafarers, and<br />

the view from it is equally impressive. Deep<br />

lakes and the bewitching Balestjärn with crystal<br />

clear water. <strong>The</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> trail passes<br />

through here.<br />

E3 TRYSUNDA<br />

<strong>The</strong> Trysunda nature reserve island is one<br />

of the most beautiful in the archipelago. <strong>The</strong><br />

harbour is well protected in a deep bay and is<br />

a very popular destination for boaters. Trails<br />

lead from the harbour to several bathing<br />

bays, view points etc. <strong>The</strong>re is also a fishing<br />

museum, guest harbour, service facilities,<br />

accommodation, shop and café. <strong>The</strong> fishers'<br />

chapel from 1655 is one of the best preserved<br />

along the Ångermanland county coast.<br />

ÖRNSKÖLDSVIK 11<br />

E3, 4 ULVÖN<br />

Ulvön island lies in Örnsköldsvik's archipelago,<br />

at the heart of the <strong>High</strong> <strong>Coast</strong>. It<br />

actually comprises two islands, north and<br />

south Ulvön. Ulvön harbour is on the north<br />

island, well protected in Ulvösundet. Ulvön is<br />

perhaps best known for its fermented herring<br />

'surströmming', which was produced here for<br />

over 100 years. About 40 people live on the<br />

island all year round, but the summer sees far<br />

more folk and activity. Restaurants, a hotel,<br />

hostel, cabin rental, shop and many fine old<br />

buildings are all found here in this beautiful<br />

archipelago environment. A variety of<br />

entertainment and events are also arranged<br />

during the summer. Midsummer celebration,<br />

Ulvö regatta, surströmming premiere and<br />

Ulvödagen (Ulvön day) are all occasions not<br />

to be missed.<br />

E4 ULVÖ GAMLA KAPELL<br />

Ulvö chapel dating from 1622 is the oldest<br />

accurately dated wooden building in Ångermanland<br />

county. Well preserved paintings by<br />

E3 SANDVIKENS FISKELÄGE<br />

Sandviken fishing village on Ulvön is three<br />

hundred years old; the old fishermen's sheds<br />

have been renovated and are now tourist<br />

cabins. Is now a culture. reserve.<br />
