Nature 

The High Coast exhibits extreme natural variation. Nowhere 

else in Europe can you find so many kinds of rock formation 

in such a small area, and the display of flora is equally 

magnificent. Hill and inland plants mix gladly with coastal 

vegetation, and the species' latitudinal growth limits freely 

overlap one another. 

Culture 

Many artists, writers and composers have been inspired by 

the special light and the equally special landscape. There are 

many exhibitions and other cultural experiences to indulge 

in here in the summer, as well as concerts featuring both 

traditional and less traditional music. 

Food 

Fermented Baltic herring (surströmming) is considered a local 

yet national dish; its fragrance generally divides people into 

two camps - haters and lovers. The 'surströmming' premiere 

traditionally takes place on the third Thursday in August.

World record in land uplift

WORLD HERITAGE 3 

The High Coast was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000. It is the geological uplift of the land that 

makes the area unique. Nowhere else in the world has land risen to such an extent since the last Ice Age. The relative 

height increase is as much as 286 m above sea level and the area is still rising by 8 mm per year. This has resulted in 

fascinating phenomena such as till-capped hills, rubble fields and exceptional caves. The World Heritage Site stretches 

from the High Coast Bridge in the south to Skagsudde in the north. Learn more about the World Heritage at Naturum 

High Coast at the foot of Skuleberget (page 9). 

Skuleskogen national park is also included in the World Heritage Site. This is a beautiful, dramatic undulating 

landscape with fascinating plant life and breathtaking views. The High Coast trail passes through it. Read more

The view from Skuleberget 

This 130 km long wandering 

trail is divided into 

13 stages which between 

them offer hiking conditions 

to suit everybody's 

liking. Nowhere else in Sweden can you 

wander so high, so close to the coast. The 

trail stretches from the High Coast Bridge 

northward to Varvsberget, and there is strategically 

placed overnight accommodation 

along the way. A trail guide is available in

Murberget open-air museum 

Härnösand 

Härnösand is beautifully situated on the edge of the High Coast's ver y special landscape . 

The town was grounded in 1585 and is one of the oldest in Norrland. The central buildings 

have been well preser ved and provide a town feeling that is rare in smaller towns . Here you 

will find a cathedral, the seat of the county governor and a university. A large par t of the 

centre is on Härnön island, and the municipality, as a whole , is marked by water and the 

sea. Sailing round the island calls for just two bridge openings . The town centre is within 

easy walking distance of our guest harbours. But we are not only coast and sea. Don't miss 

Västanåfallet, Sweden's second highest waterfall with naturum and the nature reser ve .

C5 BARSVIKEN CHAPEL 

This wooded chapel at Barsviken was built 

by fishermen from Gävle and consecrated 

in 1762. The pulpit is from 1926. Opened by

For all those with an interest in motorsports. 

This is central Sweden's circuit (Mittsverigebanan) 

for track racing, off-road and gocarting.

Västanå falls 

D5 VÅRDKASEN 

The top of the mountain Vårdkasberget is 

175 m above sea level. There is a road all the 

way up and a disabled persons adapted outlook 

tower on the top Several exercise trails 

and good mountain bike conditions. Also a 

nature reserve with rubble field. 

D5 SMITINGEN BEACH AND SMITIN- 

GEN/HÄRNÖKLUBB NATURE RESERVE 

Wide, sandy beach and flat rocks in a protected 

bay. Beach volleyball, café. Disabled 

persons adapted bathing area in parts with 

ramp and toilet. Nature reserve with tunnel 

caves, giant potholes, sea-stacks and rubble 

field. Härnöklubb is also an excellent bird 

spotting point for observing migrating sea 

birds. 

D5 LOTSSTUGAN 

The pilot station is located on the outer 

archipelago. Group activities such as conferences 

or parties can be arranged. Sauna,

CYCLING AND WANDERING ON THE 

HIGH COAST The High Coast's dramatic 

scenery can be experienced on foot or by

D5 VÅRSTA TRÄDGÅRD 

The garden was modelled on former monastery 

environments. It is divided into several 

spaces with differing plants and functions. For 

example there are more than 60 types of

Technicus is a scientific adventure for both 

big and small. A building full of interesting and 

exciting activities and exhibitions that make 

it easier to understand how the world works.

A modern theatre building providing many 

theatrical, musical and dance performances

D5 ÖSTANBÄCKEN 

Östanbäcken is one of the oldest parts of 

Härnösand, mainly comprising wooden buildings 

from the 18th and 19th centuries. They 

are protected as listed buildings. The oldest 

were constructed shortly after 1721 when a 

fire destroyed the quarter, whereas others in 

stone and concrete are only a few decades

Härnösand guided tours on foot are arranged 

once a week during the summer. They start 

from the square outside the Art gallery/

D5 HÄRNÖSANDS KONSTHALL 

The Art gallery arranges some 20 exhibitions 

a year featuring artists from all over Sweden. 

Selected items from the donated "Qvistska 

collection" are also exhibited. Once a year a 

children and youth exhibition is held, at which 

art created by Härnösand's pupils is put on

D5 HÄRNÖSAND CATHEDRAL 

This beautiful, white cathedral was consecrated 

in 1846 and stands where the original 

stone church from 1593 once stood. The 

stone church was destroyed in a fire in the 

1720s.The art in the cathedral is well-worth

D5 SAMBIBLIOTEKET 

Three libraries under one roof in a meeting 

place of 'different' architectural design. Five 

stories high with exhibition space, programme 

halls, reading workshop, educational

AND OPEN-AIR MUSEUM Here is the 

story of Västernorrland. Permanent exhibitions 

on people and artefacts from the Stone

art, handicraft, photography, film and socially 

topical subjects.The open-air museum is 

one of the largest of its kind in the country, 

depicting both urban and rural environments.

(role play), and there is always plenty of interest

The combined 90 m high waterfall is the 

second highest in the country. The nature 

reserve has a nature room with a handicraft

and the yearly folk musicians gathering are

Here you can visit a military base from the 

cold war days. Hemsö Fortress is 'inserted' 

40 metres down in Storråberget. It is fully intact

foremost Cold War coastal defence

you will find Havstoudd with its special rock 

cavity. Accommodation is available here. 

Kläffsön is a third rock cavity situated on 

the east side of the island. Guided tours of

The church, built 1859-1865, is situated on 

Hemsön island on the estuary of Ångermanälven 

river. It is a wooded building and 

has lengthways galleries; the pulpit is placed 

in the chancel. The church was renovated 

1987-88. It can accommodate a congregation

There's lots to do here – music festivals , town summer festival, cruises and a mass of other 

summer events . Then there's the archipelago with all its fishing villages , Sweden's highest 

island, the Högbonden lighthouse hostel, Ådalen III tour boat and Box, Sweden's most nor therly 

whiskey distiller y. These in combination with the amazing natural features of the area 

make it an exceptional place to visit. In addition, the High Coast Bridge , one of the world's 

longest and most imposing suspension bridges , Skuleberget and its cliffs and rock climbing 

wall, Mannaminne with its amazing buildings are other attractions not to be missed. 


D4 HÖGAKUSTENBRON 

The High Coast Bridge, one of the longest in 

the world, stretches over the Ångermanälven 

river; its pylons reach up to 180 m above 

sea level and it spans 1 800 m, making it the 

world's ninth-longest suspension bridge. 

D4 HORNÖBERGET 

Offers a fantastic view over the Ångermanälven 

river, and is a popular rest place with 

play area, hotel, restaurant, shops and tourist 

information. 

D4 HIGH COAST TRAIL 

Wandering trail through Skuleskogen national 

park and the World Heritage Site. 13 stages 

covering some 130 km. Trail guides are available 

at tourist offices. 

C4 SANDÖ BRIDGE 

Sandö Bridge was once the longest single 

span bridge in the world, but its construction 

is marred by tragic events. It offers a fantastic 

viewover the Ångermanalven river. 

C4 ÅDALENS VETERANBILMUSEUM 

A world of handsome veteran cars and 

machines, including a T-Ford from 1932 and a 

Peugeot cl2, one of only three known examples 

in Sweden. Open during the summer.

C4 ÅDALEN -31, LUNDE 

Ådalen-31 is the name of this memorial 

by Lenny Clarhäll, a reminder of the tragic 

events at Ådalen in 1931.

C4 YTTERLÄNNÄS GAMLA KYRKA 

Dating from the 13th century, this is one of 

Norrland's best preserved churches. Travellers 

church. 

C4 HÄXBERGET 

In 1675, 71 people convicted of witchcraft 

were made to walk to Häxberget where they 

were beheaded and burnt at the stake. The 

place and event are marked by a memorial. 

D4 VALKALLEN 

Valkallen in Lövvik lies at the southern end of 

the High Coast trail. Two paths, one on each 

side of the hill, lead up to the top at 240 m

The distinctly formed Balesudden forms an 

excellent navigation marker for seafarers, and 

the view from it is equally impressive. Deep 

lakes and the bewitching Balestjärn with crystal 

clear water. The High Coast trail passes 

through here. 

E3 TRYSUNDA 

The Trysunda nature reserve island is one 

of the most beautiful in the archipelago. The 

harbour is well protected in a deep bay and is 

a very popular destination for boaters. Trails 

lead from the harbour to several bathing 

bays, view points etc. There is also a fishing 

museum, guest harbour, service facilities, 

accommodation, shop and café. The fishers' 

chapel from 1655 is one of the best preserved 

along the Ångermanland county coast.

E3, 4 ULVÖN 

Ulvön island lies in Örnsköldsvik's archipelago, 

at the heart of the High Coast. It 

actually comprises two islands, north and 

south Ulvön. Ulvön harbour is on the north 

island, well protected in Ulvösundet. Ulvön is 

perhaps best known for its fermented herring 

'surströmming', which was produced here for 

over 100 years. About 40 people live on the 

island all year round, but the summer sees far 

more folk and activity. Restaurants, a hotel, 

hostel, cabin rental, shop and many fine old 

buildings are all found here in this beautiful 

archipelago environment. A variety of 

entertainment and events are also arranged 

during the summer. Midsummer celebration, 

Ulvö regatta, surströmming premiere and 

Ulvödagen (Ulvön day) are all occasions not 

to be missed.

Ulvö chapel dating from 1622 is the oldest 

accurately dated wooden building in Ångermanland 

county. Well preserved paintings by 

R Johansson Öberg from 1719. Murberget,

Kubbe and Myckelgensjö. 

D3 SJÄLEVADS KYRKA 

Some years ago this church was voted the 

most beautiful in Sweden in a nationwide 

ballot. It is one of the few octagonal churches 

in the country. Local artists exhibit in the

Lillsjöslåttern is one of few fen meadows in 

the country where hay-making is as it was.

Nature reserve with an imposing primary 

rock canyon formed by the inland ice, steep 

drops, old natural forest, giant pot-holes,

Skallberget offers a fantastic viewpoint and a 

system of caves with deep crevices for those

any way. Equip yourself with a torch, robust

The name Sollefteå is said to have been derived from "the sunny region". These regions 

around Ångermanälven river, with its sandy river banks and surrounding hills have 

caused people to meet here for time immemorial. 

Maybe this is why recent sur veys have shown that visitors to the Ådalen valley are particularly 

enthusiastic about the hospitality they meet here , today. Writers, ar tist and athletes 

seem to thrive in its friendly climate . Lars Molin, for example , grew up in Ramsele , 

and Kerstin Thor vall and Laura Fitinghoff are from the central district where actress Ingrid 

Thulin also lived. The cyclist Emma Johansson, biathlonist Helena Ekholm and skiers 

Billan and Håkan Westin are others who have shone through. 


C3 KLOCKHUSET 

Torbjörn Holmer has collected clocks since 

the 1960s and now exhibits his 750 table, 

wall and standing clocks of 4 decades in a 

renovated, extended barn.With the help 

of his brother Lars, a former architect, he 

has created a space for time. In addition to 

guided tours, Torbjörn and his wife arrange 

events throughout the year. These range from 

jazz concerts to religious services. Guided 

tours and refreshments can be arranged all

Meåforsen is the only remaining natural rapids 

in the Faxälven river and is very popular 

with grayling fishers. The rapids are about 25

wakeboard, kneeboard and scurfer is found at 

Rammsjön lake, Edsele. Wetsuits and life vests

1953-58, 7 km of Faxälven river became 

redundant and consequently a 'dead falls'. This

– ROCK ART Nämforsen along the Ångermanälven 

river is one of the largest rockcarving 

locations in northern Europe. There 

are some 2 300 known carved figures and 

lines on the islands of Notön, Brådön and 

Laxön and the nearby shorelines. The oldest 

of them may have been inscribed more than 

6 000 years ago. There are pictures of northern 

hunting people's lives - mainly of moose 

- through a hundred generations, 

as well as symbols and figures that indicate 

contact with people from further south. 

The huge collection of rock carvings, the 

special environment associated with the Nip 

landscape and the released rapids during 

the summer make Nämforsen a world-class

You can't go wrong! 

There are many ways of getting to the 

High Coast. It is situated in the 

middle of Sweden, with good connections 

to both the north and 

south. 

By air: There are three airports 

via which you can fly to and from 

Stockholm in less than an hour. 

By rail: Rail connections to the 

High Coast are just now being 

greatly improved through major 

investments and the building of the Ådalsbanan and

By coach: There are plentiful services both along the 

coast and inland. Visit, for example, www.dintur.se, 

www.ybuss.se 

By car, with the E4 as the main artery, there are 

hosts of country roads leading off to places just begging 

to be discovered. 

The High Coast comprises four municipalities: 

Härnösand, Kramfors, Örnsköldsvik and Sollefteå.
