The main part of the emission from the agricultural sector is related to livestock<br />

production and, hence, the management of manure has to be considered<br />

as the most important emission source. Most of the emission from manure<br />

originates from the production of pigs and cattle, which contributed,<br />

respectively with 44 % and 34 %, respectively.<br />

It is noteworthy that the overall emission from pigs has decreased by 40 %<br />

from 1985 to 2010 despite a considerable increase in pig production from<br />

14.7 million produced fattening pigs in 1985 to 20.9 million in 2010. One of<br />

the most important reasons <strong>for</strong> this is the improvement in feed efficiency. In<br />

1985, the nitr<strong>og</strong>en excretion <strong>for</strong> a fattening pig was an estimated 5.09 kg N<br />

(Poulsen & Kristensen, 1998). In 2010, that figures were considerably lower<br />

at 2.82 kg N per fattening pig produced (Poulsen, 2011). Due to the large<br />

contribution from the pig production, the lower level of N-excretion has a<br />

significant influence on total agricultural emissions.<br />

Another important cause of the significant decrease in the NH3 emission<br />

since 1985 is changes in practice of manure application to the fields where<br />

considerable changes have taken place. From the beginning of the 1990s<br />

slurry has increasingly been spread using trailing hoses. From the late 1990s<br />

the practice of slurry injection or mechanical incorporation into the soil has<br />

increased. This development is a consequence of a ban on broad spreading<br />

but it is also a consequence of the general requirement to improve the utilisation<br />

of nitr<strong>og</strong>en in the manure - e.g. requirements to a larger part of the nitr<strong>og</strong>en<br />

in manure has to be included in the farmer’s nitr<strong>og</strong>en accounting.<br />

This has <strong>for</strong>ced farmers to consider the manure as a fertiliser resource instead<br />

of a waste product.<br />

In NFR, the emission of particulate matter (PM) is registered <strong>for</strong> the years<br />

2000 to 2010. The emission from the agricultural sector includes the emission<br />

of dust from animal housing systems, which include emission from cattle,<br />

pigs, poultry, horses, sheep and goats. Furthermore, the emission from field<br />

burning of agricultural wastes is calculated.<br />

Present, the Danish inventory does not include emission from plant production,<br />

which means activities related to field operations as harvesting and cultivation<br />

of the soil.<br />

TSP emission from the agricultural sector contributes with 29 % to the national<br />

TSP emission in 2010 and the emission shares <strong>for</strong> PM10 and PM2.5 are
