Further, the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of IMO has<br />

agreed amendments to MARPOL Annex VI in October 2008 in order to<br />

strengthen the emission standards <strong>for</strong> NOx and the sulphur contents of<br />

heavy fuel oil used by ship engines.<br />

For NOx emission regulations, a three tiered approach is considered, which<br />

comprises the following:<br />

• Tier I: Diesel engines (> 130 kW) installed on a ship constructed on or after<br />

1 January 2000 and prior to 1 January 2011.<br />

• Tier II: Diesel engines (> 130 kW) installed on a ship constructed on or after<br />

1 January 2011.<br />

• Tier III 5 : Diesel engines (> 130 kW) installed on a ship constructed on or<br />

after 1 January 2016.<br />

As <strong>for</strong> the existing NOx emission limits, the new Tier I-III NOx legislation<br />

values rely on the rated engine speeds. The emission limit equations are<br />

shown in Table 3.36.<br />

The Tier I emission limits are identical with the existing emission limits from<br />

MARPOL Annex VI.<br />

Also agreed by IMO in October 2008, the NOx Tier I limits are to be applied<br />

<strong>for</strong> existing engines with a power output higher than 5000 kW and a displacement<br />

per cylinder at or above 90 litres, installed on a ship constructed<br />

on or after 1 January 1990 but prior to 1 January 2000.<br />

In relation to the sulphur content in heavy fuel and marine gas oil used by<br />

ship engines, Table 3.37 shows the current legislation in <strong>for</strong>ce, and the<br />

amendment of MARPOL Annex VI agreed by IMO in October 2008.<br />
