The differences in emissions between navigation and civil aviation are much<br />

larger than the differences in fuel consumption and display a poor emission<br />

per<strong>for</strong>mance <strong>for</strong> international sea transport. In broad terms, the emission<br />

trends shown in Figure 3.82 are similar to the fuel-use development.<br />

However, <strong>for</strong> navigation minor differences occur <strong>for</strong> the emissions of SO2<br />

and NOX due to varying amounts of marine gas oil and residual oil, and <strong>for</strong><br />

SO2 and NOX the development in the emission factors also have an impact<br />

on the emission trends. For civil aviation, apart from the annual consumption<br />

of jet fuel, the development of the NOX emissions is also due to yearly<br />

variations in LTO/aircraft type (earlier than 2001) and city-pair statistics<br />

(2001 onwards).<br />
