kontrakt med bruket där de lovat att inte vara
"medlem i fackförening eller andra hemliga sällskaper".
Å andra sidan har bruket samtidigt en
social skyldighet att sörja för de arbetande och
deras familjer. Det är drygt 20 år kvar till arbetarrörelsen
ska få sitt riktiga genombrott i
Avesta. 1909 får alla män rösträtt, kvinnorna
1921.
Hemma i Gamla Byn bor arbetarfamiljerna i ett
rum och kök. Kvinnorna lagar maten över öppen
eld i trebenta grytor och det ska dröja ännu
något decennium innan de energibesparande
järnspisarna sätts in i arbetarbostäderna. Då
kommer man att kunna laga ugnsrätter och baka
på ett helt annat sätt än tidigare, eftersom en
järnspis värmer ugnen automatiskt. Vatten till
tvätt, disk och skurning hämtas från kanalerna,
medan dricksvattnet bärs från brunnar längre
bort. Att väva alla kläder och sköta höns, någon
hushållsgris och kanske en ko faller också på
kvinnornas och barnens lott.
Järnverket är och förblir männens arbetsplats
ända till andra världskriget, då den akuta arbetsbristen
öppnar porten även för kvinnor.
Dirt, noise, searing heat and heavy
lifting were all part of a day’s work.
It wasn’t until decades later that
people began discussing the
working environment.
There was a clear hierarchy. The
management had the
legal right to punish
workers who were
bound by contract to
the ironworks where
they promised not to
‘join a trade union or
other secret society’. On
the other hand, the
ironworks had a social
responsibility to care
for the workers and
their families. It is still
20 years before the
labour movement would
make its major breakthrough
in Avesta. In
1909 all men had the
right to vote but
women’s suffrage didn’t
come until 1921.
At home in Gamla Byn, the old
town, the workers and their families
lived in houses with one room and a
kitchen. The women cooked the
food over an open fire in threelegged
pots and it would be another
decennium before the energy-saving
iron stoves were installed in the
workers’ houses. Then they would
be able to do what hadn’t been
possible before – roast and bake in
an oven that was automatically
heated by the iron stove. Water for
washing clothes, dishes and floors
came from the canal while drinking
water had to be carried from the
well farther away. Weaving clothes,
and keeping chickens, pigs and
maybe even a cow, was the work of
the women and children.
The ironworks was, and would
remain, the domain of the men until
the Second World War when the
acute shortage of labour opened the
doors for women.
