Tarakan field divided into three structure, one of the major structure to contribute oil is Pamusian structure, about 60% of daily oil production rate from Tarakan field is came from Pamusian structure. Total well drilled since BPM to Tesoro in Pamusian is 1078 well, which is present only produced from 42 wells. Well construction is vertically with open hole perforation covered by sand screen and produced from shallow zone in depth interval from 55 meters to 460 meters. All oil wells at Tarakan field are produced with Sucker Rod Pumping unit as conventional artificial lift. Pamusian structure located in the heart of Tarakan city which means near populous settlements. Plan of development to improve oil recovery in this field consist of two major activity such as reactivation suspended wells and introducing new artificial lift method which is more eco-friendly in populous area. Selection artificial lift method to be applied in Pamusian is Electric Submergible Pump (known as ESP) based on consideration such as (1) limited capacity of oil lifting using existing Pump Jack unit (which maximum Stroke Length unit range only between 24 inch to 54 inch). Observation from sonolog showed high dynamic fluid level means that Pamusian oil wells have higher potential than present production , (2) Delivery time of Working Barrel and Plunger used in Conventional lifting takes 24 weeks, (3) Low efficiency of existing Working Barrel, Plunger and Sucker Rod used in conventional lifting and also lack of availability during term of handover from TAC Medco to Pertamina own operation (4) Acceleration program to boost oil production in Tarakan field. UBEP SangaSanga Tarakan, Field Tarakan is located in Tarakan island, North East Kalimantan.
Tarakan field discovered by BPM (Batavia Petroleum Maatschappij) in 1905. Production from
this field commenced in 1939 and has continued to present. Since handover from Pertamina &
Tesoro Indonesia Petroleum Company cq PT. Medco E&P Kalimantan to be own operated by
PT. Pertamina EP in October 15th, 2008, Oil production from this field has increased rapidly
from average 300 BOPD to 600 BOPD in 2 months.
Tarakan field divided into three structure, one of the major structure to contribute oil is
Pamusian structure, about 60% of daily oil production rate from Tarakan field is came from
Pamusian structure. Total well drilled since BPM to Tesoro in Pamusian is 1078 well, which is
present only produced from 42 wells. Well construction is vertically with open hole perforation
covered by sand screen and produced from shallow zone in depth interval from 55 meters to 460
meters. All oil wells at Tarakan field are produced with Sucker Rod Pumping unit as
conventional artificial lift. Pamusian structure located in the heart of Tarakan city which means
near populous settlements.
Optimization of oil wells production is very important to increase daily oil production
rate in Tarakan field especially from Pamusian. Plan of development to improve oil recovery in
this field consist of two major activity such as reactivation suspended wells and introducing new
artificial lift method which is more eco-friendly in populous area.
Selection artificial lift method to be applied in Pamusian is Electric Submergible Pump
(known as ESP) based on consideration such as (1) limited capacity of oil lifting using existing
Pump Jack unit (which maximum Stroke Length unit range only between 24 inch to 54 inch).
Observation from sonolog showed high dynamic fluid level means that Pamusian oil wells have
higher potential than present production , (2) Delivery time of Working Barrel and Plunger used
in Conventional lifting takes 24 weeks, (3) Low efficiency of existing Working Barrel, Plunger
and Sucker Rod used in conventional lifting and also lack of availability during term of handover
from TAC Medco to Pertamina own operation (4) Acceleration program to boost oil production
in Tarakan field. Since operating interval depth of Pamusian wells is shallow, special designed
ESP have to be applied for becoming more techno-economic and profitable. This ESP is easily
found in the market with short delivery time, (5) Reduce low and off due to sand problem that
caused by discontinuity fluid flow from reservoir into wellbore in conventional lifting, (6) Power
consumption less than conventional pumping unit compared in same lifting capacity, (7)
Environmental aspects.
Innovation steps must be carried out in converting electric submergible water pump
became applicable as an oil pump. ESP convertion as an oil pump accomplish by changing some
inside material parts (ex. Impeller and seal) for becoming more oil resistant. Due to deal with
sub-surface and surface issued, ESP convertion also completed by choosen common phase

inverter available at domestic market and used as Variable Speed Drive (VSD) which solved
both electrical and operational flexibility issued in Pamusian oil wells.
Until now, three (3) ESP have been installed in Pamusian oil wells which has increased
daily oil production rate into double in well depth 110 – 235 meters, and proven has more total
system efficiency compared with Conventional pumping unit.
