OBITUARIES<br />
Jim was a driving force in the community <strong>of</strong> local historians that tried to<br />
put Sherborne on the map. He worked tirelessly to make the Sherborne<br />
Museum a reality, and participated in many archaeological digs in the area.<br />
Jim was the first person to find physical traces <strong>of</strong> a Saxon cathedral at<br />
Sherborne Abbey. He served as President <strong>of</strong> the Sherborne Museum for<br />
many years and supplied it with exhibition material such as illustrations and<br />
models that he made himself. One <strong>of</strong> his last endeavours for the museum<br />
was to write a pamphlet about the town’s conduit that won a much coveted<br />
Lottery grant. Jim was also President <strong>of</strong> the Sherborne Historical Society, a<br />
Brother <strong>of</strong> the Almshouse, and an active member <strong>of</strong> the Friends <strong>of</strong><br />
Sherborne Abbey.<br />
Jim’s death on 17 May 2005 after a long illness was not only a loss to his<br />
family but also to the local community in Sherborne. He left a large number<br />
<strong>of</strong> publications including Guide to Sherborne Abbey (1971), The Anglo-Saxon<br />
Cathedral at Sherborne (1975) and The Book <strong>of</strong> Sherborne (1981). Jim is survived by<br />
his wife Sally and their children Diana, Christopher, Frances and Tom.<br />
JOHN BARRY WALTER GOODWIN (1943) was born in September 1924.<br />
He was educated at Eastbourne <strong>College</strong> and came to King’s as an RAF Cadet.<br />
From 1943 to 1945 he served with the RAFVolunteer Reserve. In 1950 he was<br />
admitted as a solicitor and in July that same year married Mary Such. John<br />
held posts with Taylor Jelf & Co, the Metropolitan Police and Bentley Taylor &<br />
Stevens before becoming a <strong>Part</strong>ner with BentleyTaylor & Goodwin in Harrow,<br />
in 1960. In 1964 John became a <strong>Part</strong>ner with Goodwin & Knipe, which<br />
changed its name to Goodwin Harte & Co in 1980. He retired in 1988 and<br />
died on 13 December 1991.<br />
CHRISTOPHER WILLIAM CURTIS GREEN (1948), cousin <strong>of</strong> R L Irvine<br />
(1939), died after a long illness borne with great courage. Bill was born in<br />
Kensington on 9 June 1927 and educated at Charterhouse.At King’s he gained<br />
an ordinary degree in Agriculture and was a member <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong><br />
Cruising Club 1st team, winning a Half Blue.
