OBITUARIES<br />

Sciences. Between 1926 and 1934 he was an engineer with the Patent Agents<br />

in Paris. From 1947 to 1973 Thomas was a Director at the British Rubber<br />

Company (later Uniroyal) in Edinburgh. He was later a Director and<br />

subsequently Chairman <strong>of</strong> the Rubber Regenerating Company in Manchester.<br />

In 1971 and 1972 Thomas served as Chairman <strong>of</strong> the Oxford and <strong>Cambridge</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> Club. He was married twice, firstly to Mary Gilroy and then to<br />

Margaret Smyly.Thomas died on 15 March 1999.<br />

FRANCIS PAUL CLIFT (1928) worked for Arthur Guinness, Son & Co Ltd for<br />

over 40 years in various capacities, finally as a Company Director.<br />

Born on 5 September 1909 in London, Francis attended Tonbridge School<br />

before coming up to King’s to read Natural Sciences. He graduated in 1931<br />

with a First, started to work at Guinness in 1933, and in June 1937 he married<br />

Phyllis Clarke. The couple had three children, Barbara, Hugh and Charles.<br />

From 1966 until his retirement in 1975, Francis was Managing Director <strong>of</strong><br />

Guinness Overseas, a subsidiary company set up to establish brewing and<br />

marketing facilities abroad. He died on 28 March 1997.<br />

DAVID GRAHAM COCKBURN (1953), son <strong>of</strong> R D C (1924), was born in St<br />

Helens, Isle <strong>of</strong> Wight, on 20 August 1933. After Eton, David served with the<br />

Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve in the Fleet Air Arm. At King’s he read<br />

Geography and Archaeology and Anthropology.<br />

In 1956 he joined the Society <strong>of</strong> British Aircraft Constructors as an export<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficer before becoming a Manager at Vickers. After a spell at Robinson Frere<br />

& Co Ltd he moved on to become a Director at RHP International. In 1979 he<br />

joined Redland until 1984, when he became Managing Director <strong>of</strong> Getaway<br />

Travel and Getaway Holidays.<br />

David married Joy Bazett in 1957. He died on 25 March 1999.
