1941, and in 1942 he was made a Commander. Giles was demobilised in<br />

1945 and returned to the BBC where he was the Administrative Officer for<br />

European Services from 1948 until his retirement in 1961. Giles died on 18<br />

October 1998.<br />

EDWARD ALAN BORTON (1946) grandson <strong>of</strong> N A B B (1866), was born in<br />

India in 1921. After Bedford School he served with the Gurkha Rifles from<br />

1940 to 1946 in India, Italy and the Middle East, achieving the rank <strong>of</strong><br />

Captain. He read Modern Languages at King’s and later qualified as a solicitor.<br />

After some years he became a financial management consultant. Edward died<br />

in October 1995.<br />

DENIS BOUSQUET (1954) was born on 9 March 1928 in Saint-Hyacinthe,<br />

Quebec. He obtained his first degree and then a doctorate in Political History<br />

from the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Montreal, where he was also a director <strong>of</strong> the student<br />

newspaper. After researching diplomatic history at Columbia <strong>University</strong>, New<br />

York, Denis came to King’s to undertake post-doctoral research on Anglo-<br />

Canadian relations.<br />

After returning to Canada, Denis became a Lecturer, and later Assistant<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor, in History at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Ottawa. Between 1966 and 1970 he<br />

served as an elected representative for the Union National <strong>Part</strong>y in the<br />

National Assembly <strong>of</strong> Quebec. He then worked as a researcher at both the<br />

National Assembly and the Public Record Office in Montreal. Denis never<br />

married; he died on 1 July 1997.<br />

PHILIP BRACEGIRDLE (1940) was born in Mexborough,Yorkshire, in July<br />

1921. He attended Doncaster Grammar School and came up to King’s as an<br />

Exhibitioner to read Maths. From 1942 he served with the Royal Electrical and<br />

Mechanical Engineers, achieving the rank <strong>of</strong> Captain. He married his wife<br />

Celia in September 1945.<br />
