Throughout his career he published various papers and was sole or<br />

joint inventor <strong>of</strong> 12 patents in South Africa, Britain and the USA. In<br />

retirement Leonard continued to pursue his interests, conducting research<br />

into elastomeric friction occurring in flat drive belts. He died on 25<br />

November 1998.<br />

GEORGE ALLAN STRICKLAND BARTLEY (1930) was an engineer and<br />

member <strong>of</strong> the St Moritz Tobogganing Club, enjoying numerous descents <strong>of</strong><br />

the infamous Cresta Run.<br />

George was born in Johannesburg on 8 February 1910 and was educated at<br />

Winchester. At King’s he read Engineering and represented the <strong>College</strong> at<br />

rugby, lawn tennis and squash. After graduating he joined CA Parsons & Co<br />

Ltd, manufacturers <strong>of</strong> electricity generators, based in Newcastle. In April 1938<br />

George married Nancy Burgess.<br />

Throughout the war years George served with the Royal Engineers, initially<br />

with the British Expeditionary Force in France and later with the 8th Army<br />

in North Africa. He finished his war as a Major at Armed Forces<br />

Headquarters.After demobilisation George returned to CA Parsons where he<br />

stayed until retirement, ultimately being London Manager and Chief<br />

Executive. He also served as London Chairman <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Cambridge</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

Engineers Association.<br />

George was on the committee <strong>of</strong> the St MoritzTobogganing Club for six years<br />

and during that time took part in all major races on the Cresta Run from the<br />

top <strong>of</strong> the course. He was proud to record that he did not come last, and<br />

achieved his best time <strong>of</strong> 60.4 seconds at the age <strong>of</strong> 50. He also rode on his<br />

80th birthday. Sailing and golf were other favourite pursuits, and he was also<br />

a life member <strong>of</strong> the MCC.<br />

Following retirement George and Nancy moved to Devon and later celebrated<br />

their golden wedding anniversary with old friends from <strong>Cambridge</strong> days.<br />

George died in December 2002.<br />
