teaching English Literature as an Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor at Yale, she worked in<br />

finance, firstly at Smith Barney, then Merrill Lynch and finally as a Junior<br />

<strong>Part</strong>ner at Rosenberg Capital Management in San Francisco.<br />

Donna loved children, although she never married or had any <strong>of</strong> her<br />

own, and she was a strong advocate for education. In her memory, her<br />

family presented a sculpture <strong>of</strong> a sea turtle to an early years learning centre<br />

that had been attended by three <strong>of</strong> her nieces and nephews in East<br />

Greenwich, Rhode Island.<br />

MICHAEL JOHN BARCLAY (1944) was an engineer who worked on the<br />

reconstruction <strong>of</strong> the Garret Hostel Bridge in 1960. Born in London on 11<br />

October 1926, Michael was educated at the Beltane School in Wimbledon,<br />

although during the war years the school relocated to Melksham in Wiltshire.<br />

He read Mechanical Sciences at King’s and rowed for the <strong>College</strong>VIII at Henley<br />

in 1946.<br />

Michael began his engineering career with Sir Cyril Kirkpatrick & <strong>Part</strong>ners in<br />

1947 before moving on to the Owen Falls Construction Company in Uganda<br />

in 1950. From 1952 to 1956 he served as an administrative <strong>of</strong>ficer with the<br />

Colonial Service in eastern Nigeria before returning to engineering with<br />

firstly JL Keir & Co Ltd and then Ove Arup & <strong>Part</strong>ners. In 1974 he was awarded<br />

the Bronze Medal <strong>of</strong> the Institute <strong>of</strong> Structural Engineers and became a <strong>Part</strong>ner<br />

in the Michael Barclay <strong>Part</strong>nership.<br />

In 1949 Michael had married Mary Tyrrell, and the couple had a son. During<br />

the 1960s and early 1970s Michael was a council member <strong>of</strong> the Consumers’<br />

Association and was on the committee <strong>of</strong> the Barnsbury Housing Association.<br />

He was also a member <strong>of</strong> Islington Borough Council between 1966 and 1969.<br />

In 1974 Michael marriedVigdis Wold and had two further sons. He retired as<br />

a <strong>Part</strong>ner in 1992, but continued to work as a consultant structural engineer.<br />

Michael and Vigdis moved to live in Lillehammer, Norway, in 1993, and<br />

Michael took up teaching in addition to his consulting work. He died on<br />

13 February 2006.<br />
