town was unrivalled, as was his keenness to share it. He served as Chairman<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Epping Forest Conservative Association for 10 years and was a<br />

supporter <strong>of</strong> the Army Benevolent Fund as well as countless local charities.<br />

John died on 9 September 2005 and is remembered as a very kind and<br />

charming gentleman.<br />

ALAN SIMKINS (1944) was an engineer, based in the Midlands. Born in<br />

Shenstone on 24 November 1926, Alan was educated at the Royal<br />

Wolverhampton School before coming up to King’s where he read Mechanical<br />

Sciences. After National Service with the Royal Engineers Alan went to work<br />

for the City <strong>of</strong> Birmingham Water Department as an Assistant Engineer. He<br />

later moved on to the South Staffordshire Waterworks Company and from<br />

1960 worked as a construction engineer. In July 1957 he married June. Alan<br />

died on 6 September 1996.<br />

CHRISTOPHER GORDON HORSFALL SIMON (1934), son <strong>of</strong> H S (1899)<br />

and brother <strong>of</strong> A F H S (1928), was born in Knutsford, Cheshire in 1914. He<br />

came to King’s from Gresham’s School to study Economics under Keynes, and<br />

told <strong>of</strong> helping to test the gallery at the Arts Theatre in advance <strong>of</strong> a<br />

performance by Keynes’ wife, the Russian ballerina Lydia Lopokova. It passed<br />

the test.<br />

After <strong>Cambridge</strong>, Christopher went to the British Council, although this was<br />

interrupted by war service in the Intelligence Corps where he rose to the rank<br />

<strong>of</strong> Major. In 1948 he returned to the north west to join the family business,<br />

Simon Engineering Ltd. He married Marjorie Roberts in 1952.<br />

For many years a magistrate on the Manchester City bench, Christopher also<br />

took on a variety <strong>of</strong> other roles, including member <strong>of</strong> both the Court and<br />

Council <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Manchester, member <strong>of</strong> Manchester City Cultural<br />

Committee and member <strong>of</strong> the North West Regional Hospital Board. He died<br />

on 20 February 2002.<br />
