OBITUARIES<br />
A further career change took place in 1990 when John moved on to<br />
La Trobe <strong>University</strong> as a Lecturer in Media Studies, teaching the theory and<br />
practice <strong>of</strong> radio. However he continued his involvement in educational<br />
radio in a consulting role. The <strong>College</strong> heard <strong>of</strong> John’s death in 2005.<br />
DONALD PAYNE (1942) was born in March 1925 and educated at Luton<br />
Grammar School. He read Natural Sciences at King’s, although because <strong>of</strong><br />
the war his studies were interrupted when he spent three years with the<br />
Ministry <strong>of</strong> Food. He returned to King’s to complete his degree and then<br />
took a Diploma in Agricultural Science. Initially Donald went into academia,<br />
following 10 years lecturing at Leeds <strong>University</strong> with a further three years<br />
at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Reading. In 1962 he became a Director <strong>of</strong> Elliott<br />
Automation Systems, early manufacturers <strong>of</strong> computers. In 1958 Donald<br />
married C M Yeo. The <strong>College</strong> has no further information about his life<br />
except that he died in January 2003 in Surrey.<br />
LAWRENCE CHARLES PAYNE (1952) was born on 27 February 1928<br />
in Walsall and attended Elmore Green School in Bloxwich. He came to<br />
King’s from Manchester <strong>University</strong> where he had gained a First in<br />
Mathematics. At King’s Lawrence undertook research, gaining his PhD in<br />
1957 and was Secretary <strong>of</strong> theTheoretical Physics Club and a member <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Boat Club.<br />
From 1955 to 1960 Lawrence managed the operational research division at<br />
Decca Radar before becoming the Managing Director <strong>of</strong> Elliott Medical<br />
Automation Ltd. In 1962 he married Shireen Wrigley. Between 1965 and<br />
1967 he worked at Plessey as a Corporate Planning Executive before spending<br />
20 years at De La Rue as Director <strong>of</strong> Currency Planning. Lawrence published a<br />
number <strong>of</strong> articles in technical journals and a book, Medical Automation (1966).<br />
He died in May 1997.
