Daikin Europe N.V. - head office
A B O U T D A I K I N

DAIKIN HISTORY
Daikin has 80 years experience in manufacturing advanced, high quality equipment air conditioning for residential,
commercial and industrial applications.
The Japanese parent company, Daikin Industries Ltd. is actively engaged in research into a wide spectrum of science and disciplines
– from mechanics and electronics to chemicals and fluorocarbons.
Since its formation in 1972, Daikin Europe has evolved from a component assembly plant into the most advanced air conditioning
manufacturing complex in Europe. All European standards regarding production, health and safety are met in full.
DAIKIN QUALITY
Daikin’s much envied quality levels, stem quite simply from the close attention paid to design, production and testing
procedures as well as post sales support. To this end, every bought in component is carefully selected and rigorously tested to
verify its contribution to product quality and reliability.
ISO9001
Daikin Europe is approved by LRQA for its Quality Management System in accordance with the ISO9001 standard, which
concerns quality assurance in design, development and manufacturing as well as to services related to the product.
ISO14001
ISO14001 certifies the existence of an effective environmental management system in order to protect human health and the
environment from the potential impact of man’s activities, products and services and to assist in maintaining and improving the
quality of the environment.
CE
Daikin units comply with European standard regulations that guarantee the safety of the product
TRAINING
The continual application of leading edge technology to air conditioning has considerable bearing on the likely future shape
and direction of the European market and only a thorough understanding of new generation Daikin products and systems will
enable their full commercial potential to be realised. Training has long been accepted as a cornerstone of the company’s sales
development and customer support programmes and is vital if a broader understanding of the present and future impact of air
conditioning is to be achieved.
ENHANCING THE PRESENT -- SAFEGUARDING THE FUTURE
Throughout the last 50 years or so the basic building blocks of life – air, water and the earth – have been systematically
subjected to increasing levels of pollution with little regard to their potentially devastating effects on future
generations.
Recently however, concern has grown regarding climate changes, acid rain, water and air pollution and the constant
degradation of Earth’s natural resources. The very technology that created these problems is now being harnessed
to halt and reverse them. Depletion of the ozone layer and global warming have been highlighted and are now
being addressed. Government legislation prohibiting the use of toxic substances and the generation of pollutants
has slowed down the destruction of the environment.
Daikin Europe is proud to have been pro active in this respect, closely following its Japanese parent in implementing
policies that have often pre-empted official legislative codes and directives. As a result, a culture of ‘environmental
management’ has since 2001, played a key role in the company’s day to day activities and development strategies.
Top management commitment is reflected in the establishment of a number of action plans, which are now strictly
observed and implemented throughout the Daikin Group.
1 SUSTAINABLE USE OF ENERGY
This is exemplified in the slogan of the three Rs – reduce, recycle and reuse – and is promoted in all Daikin’s
everyday business activities, manufacturing included. Use of all resources and overall energy consumption are
constantly monitored and all personnel are encouraged to sort out recyclable items from waste along with other
hazardous substances such as batteries, printer cartridges, paper and cardboard etc.
Also, the manufacturing division has adopted ‘ZERO waste’ and ‘ZERO emission’ targets for implementation
throughout the production stage.
2 OZONE FRIENDLY AND ENERGY SAVING
Daikin Europe has always led the field in promoting the use of high efficiency refrigerants. Refrigerant R-22, now
subject to total phase out, was replaced in Daikin equipment by R-134a and R-407C and more recently R-401A, which
are harmless to the ozone layer when accidentally released in the atmosphere.

In addition, all products are continually subject to redesign in order to ensure their optimum performance during both cooling and
heating cycles. Several models are classified as ‘A’ ranking within the EU energy labeling program and others achieve ‘B’ rankings.
The large number of Daikin air conditioning models in the highest energy efficiency rankings, will undoubtedly result in several million
tons reduction in CO2 emissions, during their life cycles.
3 PRODUCT RECYCLING AND WASTE REDUCTION
The company constantly examines its use of production and packaging materials and their potential for recycling. Damaged wooden
Euro pallets for instance, are repaired and reused.
Water used in the factory, is treated before passing to the city drainage system – various impurities are separated out as sludge, which is a useful ingredient in the
cement manufacturing industry.
4 DEVELOPMENT OF ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY PRODUCTS
Daikin is firmly committed to ‘eco design’ and continually strives to improve the ‘green’ content of its products. The use of lead, mercury and cadmium etc is being
reduced and will be completely eliminated or limited to allowable levels. Furthermore, the design department adopts a ‘green purchasing’ policy, requiring
suppliers to declare their products free from all substances listed as hazardous to the environment.
5 EFFORTS AT EUROPEAN LEVEL
Daikin Europe’s environmental policy, although geared overall to world-wide considerations, takes full account of all local and specifically European, legislation
and directives. Products have been tested by an independent recycling organisation. They have confirmed the recovery potential at more then 80% and recycling
potential at more than 75% of their original content thereby meeting the criteria required by European directives.
6 ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY
Communication to internal staff is also regarded as paramount and in house computer screen saver messages constantly stress the need for environmental
awareness and cost savings. Production workers receive regular training to increase awareness in safeguarding the environment against refrigerant emission during
the production and product testing phases. Comparative data showing the positive effects of this policy are displayed on notice boards in the production areas.
7 ISO 14001 ACCREDITATION FOR THE DAIKIN GLOBAL ORGANISATION
In order to ensure continuous improvement in all its environmental activities, Daikin instructed all its affiliate companies, to achieve the internationally recognised
ISO 14001 accreditation by year 2005. Thus both the Daikin organisation and its suppliers and sub contractors, are encouraged to identify the environmental impact
of their normal business activities and take all necessary steps to protect the environment.
W hat is VRV ?
In recent years, design styles for intelligent buildings such as hotels, banks and offices etc. have increasingly featured large areas
of glazing with attendant high solar heat gains that can only be dissipated by means of air conditioning. Not surprisingly
therefore, air conditioning has grown in importance and is now widely accepted as an integral component of most modern
architectural concepts.
The increasing use of electronic office equipment raises thermal loadings still further to a point whereby, even in winter,
internal temperatures can reach uncomfortable levels. The demand for cooling or heating can also vary considerably
through-out the day depending on the number and occupation of personnel on the premises. But end users have come to
expect far more than just cooling and heating from their air conditioning.
The ideal modern system must be energy efficient, easy to install, flexible,
reliable and user friendly. Fresh air must be supplied without increasing
energy consumption and the role of central management facilities should
also be considered in this respect for medium to large sized buildings.
Daikin VRV and Hi-VRV systems meet all these demands.
The first VRV system was launched in Europe in 1987 and quickly achieved
a position of market dominance. Since then, the system has been
extensively developed and is now available in heat recovery, inverter heat
pump and cooling only versions. VRV is a sealed, stand alone dx system,
utilising refrigerant as its own heat transfer medium and without the need
of separate and expensive LPHW circuits, boilers, pumps, fans, water pipes
and storage tanks etc.
AIR CONDITIONING
DAIKIN
NETWORK SOLUTION
VENTILATION CONTROL AND
MANAGEMENT

V RV Evolution
• 1985
VRV D series, launched in 1985, supplies conditioned air from up to 4 indoor units connected to a single 5 HP outdoor unit.
• 1990
The end of 1990 sees the launch of the VRV Inverter G system, operating up to 8 indoor units from a single outdoor unit.
Inverter capacity control greatly increases system flexibility and efficiency.
Continuous improvements to energy efficiency and system flexibility lead to the development of the advanced Hi-VRV heat
recovery system in which fresh air supply (HRV) and computerised management (DACMS) are integrated with the VRV.
• 1994
Unrivalled field experience and close regard for market requirements enables Daikin to take another great stride in VRV
technology - the VRV Inverter H series, operating up to 16 indoor units from a single outdoor unit!
• 1999
The VRV Plus K series, designed around leading edge technologies and available in both heat pump and heat recovery formats,
is able to accommodate high capacity air conditioning networks of up to 30 indoor units from a single refrigerant circuit.
• 2003
Daikin Europe achieves a quantum leap forward in commercial air conditioning technology by the introduction of its VRVII, M series
– the world’s first R-410A operated variable refrigerant flow system, available in cooling only, heat pump and heat recovery versions.
Many new features and installation benefits are incorporated in VRVII. Its operating range for example – 5hp, then 8hp to 48hp in
2hp increment steps (22 system combinations), is wider than any of its contemporaries. Furthermore, its ability to run no less than
40 indoor units in heat recovery as well as heat pump format cannot at present be matched by other comparable systems.
• 2004
The introduction of the VRVII – S series, operating on single phase electricity supply, extends VRV operating scope into
the residential, condominium and light commercial sectors. Available in 4,5 and 6HP capacities, the system is designed for
installation in up to 9 room applications.
9

10
V R V I I
Following the remarkable success of the VRV, a further stride forward in commercial air conditioning
was achieved in 2003 with the introduction of VRVII: the world’s first R-410A operated variable
refrigerant flow system. Available in cooling only, heat pump and heat recovery versions, VRVII
represents a considerable advance over earlier models, underlining Daikin’s innovative application
of new technology and the latest HFC refrigerants to VRV product development.
Many new features and benefits are incorporated in VRVII. Its wider capacity range for example – 5hp to 48hp in 2hp increment
steps and the ability to run up to 40 indoor units in heat recovery as well as heat pump format. A significant improvement in
heating mode is also realised with the extension of the operation range down to –20ºC.
The use of R-410A refrigerant and a smaller refrigerant charge offer environmental benefits, as do the system’s lead free PC boards
and recyclable galbarium bottom plates. Significant installation advantages include a 50% smaller footprint and a maximum
refrigerant piping length of 150m. As with later VRV models, purpose designed dc reluctance inverter controlled scroll
compressors are incorporated, delivering high COPs, the dc motor also maintaining high efficiency levels in the most
frequently used ‘mid’ to ‘low’ settings, thereby reducing electricity consumption and costs.
A ‘mini’ heat pump version designated VRVII-S introduced in 2004, operates on single phase electrical supply and comes in 4,
5 and 6hp capacities. Intended as an extension to the VRV range, the system is designed for installation in up to 9 indoor unit
applications and is therefore, ideal for the residential, condominium and light commercial sectors.

VRVII Saves Time and Money
Significant savings in plant and electrical costs, increased
cooling and reduced plant space have resulted from installing
VRVII in a new Stuttgart office complex.
The 19 storey ‘Colorado’ building provides 17 floors of office
accommodation, planned originally with 16 offices per floor, all
with πVRV air conditioning using R-407C refrigerant.
During construction however, the specification changed
to 20 offices per floor, requiring 20 outdoor units or a switch to
VRVII, using R-410A refrigerant. The latter option was adopted,
providing 17% more cooling, 7% lower air conditioning costs, 20%
savings in electrical supply costs and 48% less plant footprint area.
Newly completed and located in Brno – second city of the
Czech Republic – in historic Moravia, Mendel University is
among the most modern of its type in Europe. VRVII heat
pump and heat recovery systems were chosen in order to
provide the flexible environment necessary to cope with
varying occupancy patterns in the classrooms and laboratories.
Also, since the university’s hot water heating system is of
limited capacity and scope, VRVII heat pumps provide all the
‘top up’ necessary on a year round basis. Furthermore, heat
given off by computers in the training and analyses rooms is
harnessed to heat 50% of the building.
Stephenson House, part of a '60s built office block was
originally air conditioned throughout by a 4 pipe fan coil
system. During the summer of 2003, the decision was taken
to refurbish the 1st floor of the building to high tech office
accommodation standard including the installation of new
air conditioning.
The Belgian owned REH-A-POLA factory in Trzebnica is renowned throughout Poland for the
manufacture of quality wheel chairs and hospital beds - early in 2004 however, it gained
increased celebrity status as the first Daikin VRVII installation in the country.
Built around fully glazed outer walls and moveable internal partition walls, the building
was comprehensively upgraded and heat pump VRVII air conditioning added wherever
deemed necessary. Several factors contributed the choice of system, the main ones being
its high EER values, ability to provide heat for premises in winter and its remarkably
flexible installation characteristics.
16
Off i c e s
The challenges imposed by legislation, stricter building control regulations and market
expectations on commercial new build and refurbishment air conditioning installations are many
and varied. In order to be acceptable a system must, first and foremost, offer low energy
consumption and address increasingly stringent environmental protection issues. It must also be
flexible enough to handle special tenant needs and variable occupancy levels and able to cope
with the high heat gains of the modern electronic office. Furthermore, it must be competitively
priced and easy to install and maintain.
Changing construction methods, working practises and individual occupant demands have of course, established new
operating parameters for office air conditioning. Growing numbers of staff work in relatively small office areas with sometimes
as little as 6 – 8m 2 allocated to each person. Computers, printers and copiers – essential components of modern offices –
all generate the same substantial heat loads in summer as they do in winter.
Modern precision controlled VRV systems however, can handle all these problems and if linked to a Daikin air conditioning
monitoring and management system, can also provide landlords and in house facilities managers with vital information on
energy consumption and running costs, usage patterns, fault indication and impending maintenance requirements.

The hotel industry is a mosaic of units of many sizes and categories, from world famous grand city
hotels, through ultra modern conference and leisure complexes and holiday properties to cosy
family run hostelries. But large or small, traditional or modern, they survive only by paying close
attention to the well being of their guests for whom genuine comfort has replaced transparent
luxury as their prime requirement.
Today’s hotel users demand not only to be well fed and housed – they also expect a pleasant indoor environment, free from
external noise and temperature variations. In short, they have come to expect the comfort implicit in air conditioning and hotel
proprietors and managers who ignore this can quickly find their guestrooms empty, regardless of their chef’s cuisine and staff
friendliness.
That air conditioning, at one time exclusive to new 5 star properties, is spreading throughout the sector is reflected in the
remarkable ongoing growth in services upgrades. Low energy consumption VRV air conditioning has much to offer in this
respect. It not only enhances the indoor environment; it can lead to improved room occupancy figures and flatten out
seasonal fluctuations in bookings. It offers independent cooling/heating in both public areas and guest rooms and can be
installed floor by floor or area by area without closing the establishment. It allows reasonable room temperature control by
guests and central overall control b the proprietor or front desk.
