HARVARD CHINA SERVICE-LEARNING PROGRAM
The Harvard China Service-Learning Program aims to create transformational experiences for
Harvard University students as they prepare for a lifelong engagement with China. Students
are able to learn about China through their volunteer placements, research assignments, and
classes with Peking University professors.
The 2010 program will run for 18 days in January and offer volunteer placements in Beijing,
Tianjin, and Inner Mongolia. Students will be expected to commit to the entire program. The
program will be managed by the Harvard Shanghai Office, with support from the Harvard
China Fund's Cambridge Office.
Eligibility: Undergraduate and Graduate students from all years of study and all
concentrations are welcome. Chinese fluency is not required, though a familiarity with the
language will be useful. Students with prior international travel and volunteering experience
preferred.
Cost: Once selected, interns will be asked to pay a $1,500 program fee. The fee will cover all
expenses in China including housing, food, and inter-China travel. International airfare will be
paid for separately and details will be given to students who have been accepted into the
program.
Program Length: Sunday January 3 rd to Thursday January 21 st .
Program sites: All students will fly to Beijing. After one week in Beijing, students will be split
into three groups. One group will complete the service week in Inner Mongolia, one in Tianjin,
and one in Beijing. All students will then fly to Shanghai for debriefing.
Application process: Applicants should submit their application form by October 9 th 2009.
Select students will be invited for interviews during the week of October 26 th . Students will be
notified on November 9 th of their acceptance into the program.
One letter of recommendation, preferably from a resident dean, a former employer, or a faculty
member, is required.
