From the Executive Director... 

November 2010 

Dear Friends and Supporters of Family Network, 

Since 1983 Family Network has been lifting up the children and families of our 

community by providing essential services for young children and parents of diverse 

backgrounds. These high quality services include early childhood programs, 

parent support, Spanish-based, and after school programs designed to meet the 

needs of working families. 

As you review the enclosed annual report you will note how much our 

programs have accomplished in the past year. However, the vital work that we 

do has been significantly hampered by the ongoing economic crisis. 

Even locally in affluent communities like Highland Park and Highwood, 

families struggle to make ends meet. Many of our families have lost their jobs 

and in some cases face foreclosures. During these trying times, Family Network 

has become an even more critical resource for families to find support. 

Due to the economic downturn, we have seen an increase in families who 

require financial assistance to attend the Parent/Child Center and After School 

Activity Programs. Eighteen ASAP families have sought additional financial assistance, 

totaling $28,000 for 2009-2010. The Right from the Start Program receives 

substantial funding from the State of Illinois, which has severely delayed 

payments. These delays have impacted our ability to run our program and have 

placed a strain on our payroll. 

Yet, you will see that we have not had to reduce services during the past 

year. We have maintained our programs by implementing cost-cutting measures, 

reducing expenses, and seeking new sources of funding. Our fund-raising efforts 

last year helped to ensure that our revenues stayed ahead of our expenses. 

Without the essential support of our individual donors this would not have been 

possible. 

We are again asking for your help to maintain our vital programs and 

services that strengthen and nurture our children and families. Your donation 

makes a difference in many lives. Lift up yourself by lifting up Family Network

THE PARENT/CHILD CENTER 

WHO WE SERVE/WHAT WE OFFER: 

The Parent Child Center provides a warm, welcoming place where families can connect 

with others in the same stage of life and find support in the challenging job of raising 

young children. Founded in 1983 by early childhood professionals, the center is based 

on the idea that providing support and education to young families helps build a secure 

foundation for the future. 

The center offers a flexible, drop-in approach where families can come for the day or 

join for the year. Nurturing, professional staff in three classrooms offer developmentally 

appropriate activities for children from birth to age four. The parent lounge offers a place 

for parents and caregivers to relax and recharge, connect with others. Parents may also 

enjoy a variety of speakers on many different topics and consult with an experienced 

social worker on site. Every family has a different story, but this one illustrates the kind 

of support Family Network regularly provides to the community. 

From Stress to Success 

Jenny was referred to the center by a local hospital. 

Jenny had stopped working as a teacher in order to care for her new 

baby, Jimmy, and her two-year old daughter, Annie. Jimmy had health 

problems and Annie had behavioral issues. Jenny’s husband was a full- 

time student and their financial situation was difficult. Jenny often felt 

overwhelmed, exhausted and anxious. She needed support. 

Jenny received a scholarship to the Parent/Child Center, and began 

attending once or twice a week with both children. 

Jenny enjoyed talking with the other parents in the Baby & Me Room 

and in the Parent Lounge, and brought many of her questions and 

concerns to our social worker. Her daughter enjoyed playing in the pre- 

school room, and adapted well to the predictable routines and activities. 

After several months, the staff suggested that Annie might benefit from 

a developmental screening. Jenny took the advice, and the screening 

revealed that Annie had some hearing prob- 

lems related to frequent ear infections. 

Today Annie is doing well in pre- 

school, and Jimmy is 

thriving. Dad has a 

new job and the 

family is about 

to move to a 

new com- 

munity.

AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITY PROGRAM (ASAP) 


The After School Activity Program (ASAP) program completed its sixth successful year 

of providing high quality after school and before school care for District 112 students. 

We are grateful to North Shore District 112 for this unique collaboration and for the 

district’s continued support for ASAP’s homes, first at Wayne 

Thomas, and now at Oak Terrace and Indian Trail 

Schools. 

ASAP provides a to notch program 

with a homelike environment, where caring and 

involved staff provide academic help, enrichment 

activities, active play and 

time for free choice. 

As an extension of 

the school day, we 

expand learning 

time for students 

by construc- 

tively filling the 

after school hours 

which are often spent 

idle, or even unsuper- 

vised. High parent and student 

satisfaction confirms the program is reaching its goals 

– one child at a time. 

Afterschool Matters 

The daughter of a hard-working single mom who attends school at 

night, Emma joined ASAP in third grade. 

Emma demonstrated great potential, but her poor behavior present- 

ed a challenge for staff and students. Extremely verbal and engaging, 

she used her skills to distract and disrupt others. Homework time at 

ASAP was particularly difficult. 

During her first year, ASAP teachers made a concerted effort to de- 

velop strong relationships with Emma. In addition, staff checked her 

backpack for homework and established daily communication with her 

teacher to make sure her work was completed. 

When Emma spoke of not being liked at home, and acted angry with 

her absent father, ASAP staff identified another area for help. Emma was 

given special jobs to bolster her self esteem and to give her feelings 

of accomplishment. Teachers also channeled her power as a leader to 

positive outlets to help her set an example for other children. 

At the close of fifth grade, Emma had become an ASAP star. Her 

teachers reported academic success and homework time had become 

productive and focused. She developed friendships and had become a 

positive leader for the students and a trusted ally for staff. 

The ASAP program provided more than after school care for Emma, 

it gave her a home where she developed social and life skills. ASAP is 

proud to be a part of this success story.

RIGHT FROM THE START/Desde El Principio 


Founded in 1994 to serve the unmet needs of the growing Latino population of 

Highwood and Highland Park, Right From The Start/Desde el Principio (RFTS) pro- 

vides education and family support services to at-risk Spanish speaking families who 

have children or are expecting a baby. 

The program promotes healthy family functioning, healthy prenatal outcomes for 

pregnant women, and enhances the development of children. RFTS provides interven- 

tion and prevention-based services for parents who may face cultural and language 

barriers, isolation, parenting challenges, financial struggles, or postpartum depression. 

Wrap Around Services 

Hortensia, a 38-year-old mother in the Right From The Start Program, 

has three children between the ages of 3 and 12. She immigrated from 

Mexico 3 years ago, without family support. A neighbor who particpat- 

ed in RFTS programs suggested she attend. Hortensia made a contact 

and Lucrecia, a RFTS family support worker, took her case. 

Lucrecia provided support and resources during home visits. When 

Hortensia was diagnosed with diabetes, Lucrecia educated her about 

the condition and referred Hortensia to a diabetes education program 

at the community health clinic. 

Initially, Hortensia didn’t want to leave her home to participate in 

RFTS activities. Backed by Lucrecia’s support and encouragement, 

eventually Hortensia began to attend RFTS programs. Lucrecia also 

referred Hortensia’s son Felipe and daughter Aurora to the fitness and 

nutrition program that RFTS facilitates at Oak Terrace School. 

The children enjoy the activity and are learning about the importance 

of a balanced diet and exercise for a healthy lifestyle. 

Lucrecia tracked the youngest daughter, Susana’s, 

development during home visits, and realized 

that she was not reaching critical milestones. 

She referred Susana to an Early Interven- 

tion Program, where Susana received 

physical and occupational therapy. 

While Hortensia’s story is a work in 

progress, her situation il- 

lustrates the value of 

the wrap-around 

services pro- 

vided by RFTS. 

The safety net 

provided by 

the agency has 

helped an at-risk 

family to conquer 

physical and mental 

health issues and to 

feel at home in a new com- 

munity. The ending has yet to be written 

but the outcome has been greatly influenced 

by the work of RFTS.
