Annual Report
2008-2009
CENTER DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE
This past year our nation struggled as the economy plummeted to levels not seen
since the Great Depression. At Family Network our families continue to report
how grateful they are that Family Network is here to help support them during
these difficut times.
PROGRAM ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Thanks to the tremendous efforts of our staff, volunteers, Board, Advisory
Committee and alumni, Family Network was able to serve 1,645 participants in
FY09. We are grateful to all the wonderful children and families we have had the
privilege to work with and learn from. This annual report highlights the
outstanding accomplishments of our family support programs.
WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP
The Parent Child Center continues to be a unique and successful program
serving 461 participants this past year. Families benefited from this program and
took advantage of the educational, enrichment and socialization opportunities
that exist within the center. However the costs associated with running the
program have significantly risen.
• Our commitment to provide parent support services regardless of ability to pay
has resulted in full fee waivers for more than 50% of our families, and fee
assistance for many others. Even if every family were able to pay, the fees would
not cover operational costs.
The Right From The Start program provided an extensive array of offerings
including home visits, groups and educational programs for parents and
children, while also providing van transportation and childcare. In FY09,
1,110 participants were served in this comprehensive program.
• Due to the state budget shortfall, Right From The Start has already seen a 10%
decrease in funding in the current fiscal year. Additionally, cuts from other sources
will make this year especially challenging.
The After School Activity Program served 74 children last year. ASAP supplies
students of working families with homework help, and also offers a welcoming
and secure environment with a variety of stimulating and enriching activities.
• In FY09 ASAP received more requests than ever from local families seeking
financial support. To help accommodate these struggling families, the program
assumed over $30,000 in tuition assistance.
PLEASE HELP KEEP FAMILY NETWORK GOING
Our programs do more than just fill a need for our children and families; they
provide our families with increased knowledge, skills, and confidence that
ultimately strengthen and enhance our entire community. Now more than ever
your help is needed to maintain our valuable programs. Please give generously
so that Family Network can continue to meet our mission and serve the diverse
needs of our community.
WHY IT MATTERS
We are proud that the Parent/Child
Center, founded 26 years ago, still
provides a warm and welcoming place
where families with young children can
gather, learn, and find support. Our
participants come from diverse backgrounds,
which enriches the experiences
they have at the center in many ways.
Our flexible drop-in approach is uniquely
suited to the needs of families with
infants and young children, enabling
parents and caregivers to access our
programs and services as needed.
First time mothers who are adjusting
to their new role, parents with active
toddlers who are looking for a safe
place to play and a gradual approach to
separation, and families who are new to
the community - all find a place to learn
“My son has learned that mom always comes
back! He has learned to play and share with
others and to trust his teachers.”
Our nurturing, professional
staff provides
stimulating, developmentally
appropriate play
activities while
parents have a
chance to relax and
recharge, to
connect with other parents, and to share
experiences, problems and solutions. In
addition to speakers on a wide variety of
topics, we offer the services of an
experienced social worker who can
consult with parents and assist them in
finding resources when needed.
The Dual Language Morning continues
to be our busiest day, providing bilingual
activities for children and fostering
understanding and communication
between English and Spanish speaking
parents. The monthly “Sharing Traditions”
parent activities, which include
holiday celebrations and sharing favorite
foods and crafts from different cultures,
continue to be wonderful (and delicious)
ways of connecting with one another.
“What a unique place
facility for both
children and their
caregivers!”
Our spring Community Concert, which
this year was free to the public and
featured performers who sang in English
and Spanish, was successful in sharing
Family Network’s multicultural spirit with
the wider community. The concert was
made possible by a generous grant from
the Highland Park Cultural Arts Commission
and the Illinois Arts Council.
Our newly revamped website has given
the Parent/Child Center a new way to
reach out to parents who are looking for
connections, support, information, and
a sense of community. We are grateful
to all of those who have enabled us to
fulfill our mission since our beginnings in
1983, and to all of you who can help us
to continue into the future!
WHY IT MATTERS
In spite of funding cuts, the Right From
The Start (RFTS) program continued to
work hard to maintain our high quality
comprehensive family support programs.
Last year in collaboration with University
of Illinois Extension and the Trinity
Episcopal Church, we provided a new
program on healthy eating. The Cooking
School included a week of classes
on food safety, budgeting for meals,
creative meal planning with healthy
recipes, and networking among participants.
We were also excited to offer a series of
classes on financial literacy, sponsored
by MB Financial in 2009 and by a grant
throught the United Way of the North
Shore in 2010. We look forward to
continuing these offerings again in FY10.
We are thankful to all of our funders,
staff, community partners and volunteers
who contributed their resources and time
to make FY09 such a successful year. To
work with families I would like to share
a success story. (To preserve the family's
privacy, the name has been changed.)
Maria is a 35 year-old Mexican
immigrant with three children - ages 3,
9, and 10. Her husband works in a
restaurant as a dishwasher. She has
been involved with Right from The Start
since 1998 when she had her second
child and enrolled in our early childhood
program. She received home
visits and also participated in our
center-based groups.
Maria complained for many weeks
about headaches and difficulty walking.
She was receiving healthcare at a local
facility and needed a $1000 MRI of the
brain. This was prohibitively expensive
for her very low income family. Maria’s
physical health was deteriorating rapidly
and she was desperate. She could not
locate a provider that could cover this
procedure at a reduced rate.
Luisa Espinosa-Lara, Administrative Aide
Alejandra Martinez, Child Care Provider
Lucrecia Soruco, Family Support Worker
Maria, who had established a strong
and trusting relationship with RFTS,
decided to contact her long time family
support worker, Bertha Chávez. Due to
Mrs. Chávez's unrelenting advocacy,
another health care facility was found to
cover the procedure. Maria was admitted
and diagnosed with a brain tumor.
When Maria was scheduled for surgery,
her family was paralyzed with fear.
During this very tough time, we offered
support to the family by developing a
childcare plan during the mother's
recuperation and facilitating the
communication between the family and
the hospital. When Maria had recovered
and was able to speak again, she
continued to seek support from our
program and called every day to let us
know of her progress.
Maria is doing well now after a long
and painful recovery and is taking care
of her children. I am pleased that we
were able to support this family during
a very traumatic time. Thanks to the
advocacy, support and follow-up services
provided by the program, Maria was
able to obtain the critical diagnosis and
treatment that saved her life. Our wide
array of prevention-based, supportive
programs and improved access to community
services are essential to families
like Maria's.
WHY IT MATTERS
During the 2008-09 school year, ASAP
continued to play a crucial role in the
lives of working parents by providing a
safe, nurturing, after-school environment
for their children. ASAP’s highly qualified
staff engaged the children in a wide variety
of enrichment activities, supported
academic achievement by helping with
daily homework, and offered opportunities
to enhance social skills through
interactions with peers and staff.
Our north Highland Park ASAP site
started the year with a move from Wayne
Thomas School to Oak Terrace School.
We were warmly welcomed by the Oak
Terrace family and quickly adjusted to
our new space on the stage in the multi-
purpose room.
Indian Trail also began the year with
change. A brand new staff of three
greeted the children when they arrived.
Everyone quickly settled into the routine,
completing homework, participating in
creative enrichment activities, and making
new friends. To cap off the first few
months of school, the Indian Trail kids
planned and rehearsed their own ASAP
Circus, ultimately presenting their “acts”
to parents on the Indian Trail playground.
Always striving to add new features to
the ASAP program, staff presented many
new learning opportunities at both sites.
The Indian Trail students participated in
a service project funded by a grant from
the Pay It Forward Foundation, which
emphasized the importance of helping
others. With staff and community volunteers,
the children made fleece blankets
and pillows for children at a local shelter.
At Oak Terrace, the value of learning
from members of the community was exemplified
by a Veteran’s Day visit from a
"We were looking for someone to simply
watch our boys for a couple of hours a couple
of days a week. I was pleased to see that
the boys completed their homework and they
enjoyed participating in the activities. Bottom
line, so much more value than I expected."
Kaylee Longest, Teacher
Brenda Ramirez, Teacher
Elva Velez, Teacher
WWII veteran, who talked to the children
about his experiences as a doctor during
the war. The children also participated in
a variety of other activities: a presentation
on Jackson Pollack, followed by a
huge, messy splatter painting project;
monthly visits from Harriet, the “library
lady;" and hands-on science experiments
and nature-related projects.
Our annual Spring Parent Survey confirmed
our own impression, that it was
another sensational year! Of those who
responded to the survey, 100% indicated
that they would recommend ASAP to
others. Significantly, all parents indicated
that their children felt a sense of belonging,
feelings of accomplishment and
well-being, and improved communication
skills with adults and peers. For the
2009-10 school year, we anticipate our
usual high rate of returning students and
that ASAP will continue to provide the
quality after-school program for which
we’re known.
Bobbie Hinden, Program Director
"ASAP is a fabulous program
because of the caring individuals
involved. You couldn't
ask for a more nurturing,
positive, fun place for a kid
to be after school. I am very
grateful for this program."
