An Athletics Club tailored for 5–14 year olds which focuses on fundamental<br />

movement skills through a range of athletic based coaching sessions. This<br />

Club implements techniques which are essential in most other sports.

What is it?<br />

<strong>Run</strong> <strong>Jump</strong> & <strong>Throw</strong> (RJT) is a programme<br />

designed to give children an opportunity<br />

to discover <strong>and</strong> participate in Athletics<br />

activities all year round. It is a Club tailored<br />

to suit children of all skill levels from<br />

beginners to those who have already taken<br />

part in introductory athletics programmes,<br />

holiday courses or local community junior<br />

competitions. The RJT programme offers<br />

children a wide variety of Athletics events<br />

<strong>and</strong> techniques, <strong>and</strong> focuses on the<br />

fundamental movement skills, important<br />

in every child’s development.<br />

Who is it for?<br />

Children aged 5 to 14 years who want to<br />

have fun, participate, make friends <strong>and</strong><br />

learn new <strong>and</strong> exciting skills.<br />

What do I need to get<br />

started?<br />

Just a pair of trainers, water bottle <strong>and</strong><br />

clothing suitable for exercise.<br />

Athlete Pathway<br />

Ages 5-14 9-14 9-14 14+<br />

5 – 6 age group<br />

will have the opportunity to practice <strong>and</strong><br />

become familiar with the basic techniques<br />

involved in running, jumping <strong>and</strong> throwing<br />

events. Enjoyment is the key factor in this<br />

age group.<br />

7 – 8 age group<br />

introduces additional events <strong>and</strong> technical<br />

aspects to the Athletics activities <strong>and</strong> continues<br />

to build on the foundations of good technique,<br />

enjoyment <strong>and</strong> a healthy lifestyle.<br />

9 – 14 age group<br />

offers the opportunity to enhance these<br />

acquired skills <strong>and</strong> techniques across a wide<br />

range of Athletics disciplines, introducing<br />

some competitive elements, while maintaining<br />

the emphasis of fun <strong>and</strong> enjoyment in positive,<br />

healthy activities. From this stage, when<br />

children have reached a certain level we will<br />

refer them to an affiliated Athletics Club, such<br />

as Grangemouth Development Squad, <strong>Falkirk</strong><br />

Victoria Harriers or Central Athletics Club.<br />

We follow the UKA awards system which<br />

allows our athletes to strive for levels <strong>and</strong><br />

badges through practised disciplines. At the<br />

end of each block each child is awarded a<br />

personalised feedback certificate.<br />

Age Groups: August – October 2013<br />

The programme is based around Athletics, but the skills acquired can be extremely beneficial<br />

to children across a wide variety of sports. The Club operates in a safe, relaxed <strong>and</strong> friendly<br />

environment, allowing children to enjoy their experience, make new friends <strong>and</strong> to progress<br />

athletically. Scottish Athletics Ltd states “...it is widely recognised that Athletic activities:<br />

running, jumping <strong>and</strong> throwing – underpin every sport in Scotl<strong>and</strong>...”<br />

Please note that there is no option to pay weekly. Blocks must be paid in full although kids<br />

can join at any time <strong>and</strong> will only be charged for the remainder of the block at the time<br />

of joining.<br />

sessions; the essential ABC’s<br />

The 7 & 8 year age group<br />

view to improve. Children<br />

should begin to realise their<br />

development <strong>and</strong> aptitude<br />

enjoyment <strong>and</strong> enthusiasm.<br />

This class is designed to<br />

develop fundamental athletic<br />

skills, basic movement<br />

activities, social skills, <strong>and</strong><br />

balance <strong>and</strong> co-ordination<br />

during play <strong>and</strong> skill sessions.<br />

This more advanced section<br />

of the Club increases the skill<br />

factors <strong>and</strong> technique levels<br />

acquired in basic RJT. This<br />

block also introduces<br />

aspects of fitness training,<br />

competitive elements <strong>and</strong><br />

the importance of warm-up,<br />

cool-down, flexibility, healthy<br />

eating, etc. Children in this<br />

group will enjoy training<br />

programmes in specific events<br />

<strong>and</strong> may be encouraged to<br />

take part in competitions or<br />

events. With experience<br />

gained children may wish to<br />

progress further <strong>and</strong> consider<br />

joining an affiliated Athletics<br />

Club.
