RNIB Scotland Magnifiers RNIB is now offering a range of magnifiers up to the strength of 6x. Before purchasing any magnifier it is recommended that you read the ‘Choosing Your Magnifier’ booklet available from the RNIB shop. We have a selection of magnifiers in the RNIB shop in the Sensory Centre and you are welcome to come along and try them out. You can be issued with an appropriate magnifier after attending a low vision clinic which is strongly recommended. You can be referred to the clinic by your General Practitioner, optometrist or ophthalmologist. Switch on to technology month: Taster events Come along a technology taster event! November 2011 is Switch on to technology month. To celebrate we're running two technology taster events in Falkirk - one about eBook readers and the other about smartphones. Many of the latest high street products are designed with blind and partially sighted people in mind. It's often just about knowing how to access the right features. Come along to one or both of our events to hear from an RNIB expert and try out the products for yourself. So, an eBook is simply a book in electronic format. New books, newspapers and magazines are starting to be published in eBook format at the same time as print editions. So eBooks give you access to thousands of new books and publications every year at the same time as sighted readers. We like to think of eBooks as a 3-in-1 reading format. If eBooks are accessible they can be read in various ways: as audio, braille or large print, allowing you to choose the method that works for you. You can read eBooks using a dedicated eBook reader such as the Amazon Kindle, a multi-functional device such as the iPad, or use software on your computer or mobile phone. Different eBook readers offer different types and levels of accessibility so it's important to find one that suits your needs. Whether you're completely new to the concept of eBooks, know a little or just want to be sure you're making the most of the eBook reader you already have, join our event. Hear from an RNIB expert, ask questions, share experiences and try out some eBook readers for yourself. We're in an age of smartphones with people using them to get connected to the internet, read eBooks, play music and find their way with satellite navigation.
