Graduate Student Senate
Getting Involved in GSG
The Graduate Student Senate is the legislative branch of
GSG, and it meets regularly during the school year. Meetings
are held in room 117 of the Student Services Building every
Tuesday at 11:00 am, and are open to the public. During
the meetings, the Senate hears officer and committee reports
and votes on legislation. Legislation occurs in the form of
bills, which may allocate money to organizations, create or
amend SGA policy, or express the opinion of the Senate on
a particular issue with a resolution. The Senate is composed
of Senators from each department. Senators are elected each
fall soon after the semester begins. This year, voting will
take place 24-26 September 2007, with applications due 17
September 2007. Any full-time graduate student in good
standing is eligible to run for co-op or departmental Senator.
Additionally, the President appoints several at-large positions
throughout the year, as well as appointments to vacated
departmental positions.
Graduate Officers
The Graduate Student Government President represents
the graduate student body, makes appointments, and is responsible
for the executive branch. The Graduate Student
Government Vice President chairs the meetings of the Senate
and serves as the President in his absence. Other officers
include a Treasurer who administers money in the Senate's
accounts, a Secretary who records the minutes of the meetings,
and a Coordinating Officer who acts as liaison between
the Senate and Undergraduate House of Representatives.
The President and Vice President are elected by the graduate
student body in the Spring Semester, with one year terms
of office beginning the last week of spring semester. The
Treasurer, Secretary, and Coordinating Officer are elected by
the newly elected Senate each fall and also serve a one-year
term. Any full-time graduate student in good standing is
eligible to run for a GSG office.

GSG Committees
All GSG committees except Joint Finance are open to any graduate
student in good standing at any time. Committees generally
meet once per week, and report to the Officers, Senate, and
Student body as needed. To join a committee, simply fill out
and return the attached interest form, or talk to anyone in GSG.
Committee chairs are generally appointed by the President during
summer term.
Academic Affairs
Represents graduate student concerns on academic issues and
policies and academic services such as the Library. Organizes
the annual Graduate Student Research Symposium.
Graduate Conference Fund
Reviews policy for and distributes Graduate Conference Fund
money.
Health Services
Provides graduate student input into the student health insurance
policy, and the operation of the Health Center.
Student Welfare
Maintains professional development programs, as well as input
to campus dining options, and other general areas of graduate
student welfare on campus.
Internal Affairs
Announces and conducts all graduate student body elections
and advises GSG on matters of policy and procedure.
Joint Campus Organizations
Reviews charter requests for new student organizations, and
produces the Campus Organizations Handbook.
Joint Finance
Advises GSG on the allocation of student activity fees through
the budget process and allocation via bills.

Institute Committees
Graduate student interests are represented through student participation
on Institute and Faculty committees at Georgia Tech.
The Graduate Student Government President appoints graduate
students to the various Institute Committees and Governing
Boards listed below. For more information on these committees,
contact the GSG. Any graduate student is eligible.

Academic Integrity, Academic Services, Faculty Benefits, Faculty
Honors, Graduate Curriculum, Library, Statues, Student
Academic and Financial Affairs, Student Activities, Student
Grievance and Appeals, Student Honor, Student Regulations,
and Welfare and Security.
General Institute Committees
Counseling Center Advisory, Health Services Advisory, Housing
Priorities, Institute Budget and Planning, Transportation and
Parking Advisory, Research Advisory Council, Safety Advisory,
and Student Ticket Committee.
Student Governing Boards
Board of Student Publications, Family Housing Association,
Intramural Advisory Board, Radio Communications Board,
Residence Hall Association, Campus Recreation Center Advisory
Board, and Student Center Governing Board.
Graduate Judiciary
The Graduate Judiciary branch of the Graduate Student Government
handles cases in which graduate students are charged with
non-academic violations of the Student Conduct Code. The
Judicial Board also rules on GSG election violations and review
the constitutionality of action by the executive and legislative
branches. Any graduate student in good standing not currently
serving as a Senator or Officer of GSG is eligible to become a
member of the Graduate Judiciary. Five to seven Justices are
appointed to one-year terms by the GSG President at the end of
the spring semester.

Graduate Student Government Association
The Graduate Student Government (GSG) serves as the governing
body of the graduate student body. As part of the Student
Government Association, GSG is responsible for representing
the interests of the graduate student body as well as distribution
of money collected through the student activity fee. All graduate
students are citizens of the GSG. As with most governments,
GSG exists as three distinct parts: the legislative, executive, and
judicial branch. Some of the functions of GSG include:
Representation of Graduate Concerns
The GSG represents graduate student concerns to the faculty,
administration, and state government. Through GSG, graduate
students are appointed to various committees which affect graduate
life. GSG itself serves as a forum for discussions on issues
and as a policy-making body for all graduate students.
Allocation of Student Activity Fees
The Graduate student Government, primarily through the
Graduate Student Senate, works with the Undergraduate Student
Government to allocate over $3.6 million in student activity fee
money to the Student Center, Campus Recreation Center, Student
Publications, and various student organizations. To request funding
for an organization, stop by the Student Government office.
Chartering of Student Organizations
GSG reviews charters for graduate student organizations and
works with the Undergraduate Student Government to review
charters for organizations for all students. GSG also works
with departmental graduate student organizations on issues of
concern.
Graduate Student Research Symposium
Each spring semester, GSG organizes a research symposium for
Georgia Tech graduate students. With the support of academic
colleges and Auxiliary Services BuzzFunds, we award over
$3,000 in prizes for poster and oral presentations.
Special Programs for Graduate Students
GSG sponsors several programs for the graduate student body,
including the annual Graduate Student Picnic each fall.
Special Services of GSG
The Graduate Student Government provides several special
services to the graduate student body, and in conjunction with
the Undergraduate Student Government, several services to the
entire student body.
Graduate Conference Travel Fund
This fund provides supplemental money for graduate students
traveling to and presenting research at a conference. Application
forms and instructions are found on our website at

Applications should be submitted to the SGA Office twenty-one
days prior to attending a conference.
Free and Confidential Legal Advice
Free legal advice is available to all Georgia Tech students through
the Student Government Office. Lawyers volunteer their time and
advice to students on almost any legal issue. The lawyers are
available, provided enough students sign up, Mondays, Tuesdays
and Wednesdays at 3:00pm and Thursdays at 2:00pm (immigration
law only on Thursdays). For more information or to make
an appointment, call 404-894-2814.
Voter Registration
The Student Government Office serves as a voter registration
site for the Georgia Tech campus. GSG encourages all eligible
students to register and to vote in all elections. To register to
vote, stop by the Student Government office, located across from
Einstein Bros. in the Student Center Commons, during business
hours. The voting site is on campus in the Student Center.
LaTeX Classes
GSG organizes classes on the LaTeX typesetting system common
in many science and engineering fields. These courses are taught
in the Georgia Tech Library, and a schedule can be found on the
library website under Library Classes & Tours.
GSG News
GSG employs a variety of means to keep the graduate students
aware of current issues on campus. The Technique often carries
articles and advertisements about the GSG in addition to weekly
coverage of the Graduate Student Senate meetings. Current
