School of Mathematics 

• New courses: 

• MATH 1503: Calculus I for the Life Sciences 4‐0‐4 

MATH 1504: Calculus II for the Life Sciences 4‐0‐4 

• There were several issues noted in regard to this proposal. 

• Clean‐up, as needed, for all courses that have MATH 1501 and 1502 

as prerequisites 

• Each academic unit will have to decide if MATH 1503 and 1504 are 

actually interchangeable as prerequisites or if the more limited 

Linear Algebra in the new courses will pose a problem 

• Already teaching this content ‐ have sections of MATH 1501 and 1502 

that are restricted to Biology majors and that operate the way these 

new courses are proposed 

• MATH 1522 can continue to serve as bridge course, if needed, to 

provide more Linear Algebra content

• Thus, identification of IAML majors according to language for assessment and 

communication is complicated and requires multiple searches to accomplish, 

especially for in‐coming freshmen.


• Require CHIN/FREN/GRMN/JAPN/RUS/SPAN 4500 as one of the 

courses completing the language core courses for the IAML degree. 

• Require an International Experience of each IAML major. 

• In sum, the proposed IAML modifications 

• clearly differentiate between the different language concentrations of 

the students; 

• add RUSS to the available languages as a concentration; 

• the Language core for the IAML degree changes from 8 elective courses 

to 7 elective plus 1 required course, Language 4500; 

• and all students are required to undertake an international experience as 

part of the degree.

enrolled students at Georgia Tech who have earned the Das 

Deutsche Sprachdiplom (DSD) certificate during their high school 

programs (outlined in the supporting materials) to earn advanced‐ 

level credit for GRMN. 

• ML would be interested in granting credit in this fashion: 

• DSD I: 3 hours of GRMN 3XXX 

• DSD II: 6 hours of GRMN 3XXX 

• This credit would be authorized by the Registrar once a copy of the DSD 

assessment has been received or through the processing of a Non‐Resident 

Credit form via the School of Modern Languages.


School of International Affairs 

• A new course, INTA 3242 Soccer and Global Politics, 

to meet the Social Science and Global Perspectives areas in 

the Core Curriculum. 

• Approved by subcommittee on 11/5/2012 and is pending 

approval of the Advisory Committee and the General Education 

Council. The Registrar’s Office will follow up on these additional 

approvals.

Bachelor of Science in Building Construction 

• Rationale: 

• The 2012 report from the external accreditation visiting team of the 

American Council for Construction Education (ACCE) stated as a 

weakness of the BSBC curriculum that the number of construction 

science hours is not sufficient. 

• Proposed changes: 

• Add course BC 4710 Green Construction 

• Delete course BC 4640 Construction Marketing 

• No changes in the total program hours or in the hours of 

core/electives between the current program and the proposed new 

one.


School of Aerospace Engineering 


Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering 

• Proposed changes: 

• The faculty members of the School of AE request that the course LCC 

3401 (2‐0‐2) be replaced with LCC 3403 (3‐0‐3). This change is 

requested because LCC 3401 is no longer taught. Note LCC has been 

changed to LMC. 

• We also request that the free elective hours be reduced from 10 to 

9, to keep the total number of hours the same, at 132.


School of Biomedical Engineering 

• New course (Cross‐listed with existing course) 

• BMED 4740: Biologically Inspired Design 3‐0‐3 

Note: Course content is being reviewed by the Registrar’s Office to 

ensure that it matches that of the existing course(s).


School of Public Policy 

• Modification to Minor in Law, Science, and Technology

• Special topics course now has a permanent number. Request 

is to replace it in the list of courses with the new permanent 

number. 

• One of those electives has been a class previously offered 

as MGT 4803 Special Topic: Technology Law & Ethics . 

• Now that the class has been re‐numbered as MGT 3608, 

we request authorization to apply the newly re‐numbered 

class toward the LS&T minor and Pre‐Law certificate


School of Mechanical Engineering 

• New Course: ME 4215 Manufacturing Process Analysis 

• New Course: ME 3210 Design, Materials, and Manufacture 

• Replace BSME requirement of ME 4210 with ME 3210 (pre‐approved 

substitution during transition period) 

• Establish a fifth Concentration Area, Manufacturing, within the undergraduate 

Mechanical Engineering degree program. 

• Deactivate ME4210 Manufacturing Processes and Engineering 

• Pre‐requisite change for required course, ME 4182 Capstone Design. New pre‐ 

requisite list (additions in red, deletions with strikethrough): 

• ME 2110, ME3210, ME4210*, (ME3180 or ME4315).

• Previously there was a course numbered CHEM 1311 Inorganic Chemistry I, 

which was deactivated in July 2011 (IUCC project number 577). 

• CHEM 3111, the subject of this proposal is currently titled “Inorganic 

Chemistry II”. We are proposing that the title of the course be changed to 

“Inorganic Chemistry”.

• Modify the existing BSCM to eliminate CS 4911 (3 hours) and CS 4901 (1 hour) 

as required capstone courses and to replace them with a single CS 4912 (3) 

course. 

• Restore CS 4001 as a required CS course. 

• Combine and condense two courses, CS 4911 (3 hours) and CS 4901 (1 hour), 

into one: CS 4912 (3 hours). The one hour freed by the elimination of CS 4901 

will be diverted to free elective hours.

School of Literature, Media, and Communication 

• Degree modification – Change in name of degree

• To Bachelor of Science in Literature, Media, and Communication (with

• In response to the recommendation of the 2010 Board of Regents 

Review team and to the evolving research interests of the faculty, the 

Literature, Media, and Communication Undergraduate Curriculum 

Committee and the faculty of LMC recommend that the B.S. in Science, 

Technology, and Culture (BSSTC) be revised to follow a “threaded” 

curriculum. 

• The threaded design of the LMC degree is intended to generate 15 

distinct concentrations, major who elects to pursue the Media 

thread and the Interaction Design thread would complete an LMC 

degree with the Media‐Interaction Design concentration. 

• Number of hours for the degree remains at 122
