Fellowship<br />
Research Fellowship on SMI Energy- Environmental <strong>Issue</strong>s at AIT<br />
Small and Medium Scale Industries (SMI) in Asia: <strong>th</strong>e Energy, Environment and Climate Interrelations project<br />
promotes <strong>ac</strong>tivities <strong>th</strong>at mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and o<strong>th</strong>er pollutants in <strong>th</strong>e brick and ceramic, desiccated<br />
coconut, foundry, tea and textile sectors in China, India, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. The project is coordinated by <strong>th</strong>e<br />
<strong>Asian</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong> (AIT) and funded by <strong>th</strong>e Swedish International Development Co-operation Agency (Sida). Fellowship<br />
programmes are available for qualified persons to conduct research on policy aspects and sector specific research related<br />
to energy- environment issues <strong>of</strong> SMI. Research terms <strong>of</strong> reference (ToR), qualifications and o<strong>th</strong>er details are given below:<br />
Fellowship: I (Policy Related <strong>Issue</strong>s)<br />
Proposed Activities (ToR):<br />
• Study regulations and incentives on energy conservation and pollution reduction<br />
• Establish policy scenarios <strong>th</strong>at promote Energy Efficient and Environmentally Sound Technologies (E 3 ST) in selected<br />
SMIs to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and o<strong>th</strong>er pollution<br />
• Review laws and regulations, standards and policy instruments related to SMIs’ energy use and pollution prevention<br />
and reduction in participating and o<strong>th</strong>er countries in <strong>th</strong>e region, and<br />
• Prepare a report based on <strong>th</strong>e above <strong>ac</strong>tivities<br />
Qualifications:<br />
• Citizen <strong>of</strong> participating countries; China, India, Philippines, Sri Lanka or Vietnam<br />
• PhD or Master’s degree in energy, environmental economics or policy planning<br />
• Pr<strong>of</strong>essional experience in <strong>th</strong>e field <strong>of</strong> SMI from <strong>th</strong>e participating countries<br />
• Demonstrated capability in analyzing data and report preparation<br />

Fellowship: II (Brick and Ceramic, Desiccated Coconut, Foundry, Tea and Textiles)<br />
Proposed Activities (ToR):<br />
• Revise and update <strong>th</strong>e sector report (for details cont<strong>ac</strong>t smiasia@<strong>ait</strong>.<strong>ac</strong>.<strong>th</strong>)<br />
• Me<strong>th</strong>odology for estimating GHG emissions for selected SMI sectors and comparison wi<strong>th</strong> o<strong>th</strong>er important sectors in<br />
<strong>th</strong>e country<br />
• Developing scenarios to mitigate GHG emissions and o<strong>th</strong>er pollution from selected sectors based on case studies<br />
done by national research institutions<br />
• Imp<strong>ac</strong>t studies on SMI projects; policy personnel, SMI associations, SMIs, wi<strong>th</strong> respect to empowerment, sustainability,<br />
poverty, gender, environment, and knowledge and lessons<br />
Qualifications:<br />
• Good working knowledge <strong>of</strong> English<br />
• Master’s degree (minimum) wi<strong>th</strong> relevant experience in <strong>th</strong>e selected sector<br />
• Citizen <strong>of</strong> China (Brick and Ceramic), India (Tea), Philippines (Foundry), Sri Lanka (Desiccated coconut) and Vietnam<br />
(Textile)<br />
Number <strong>of</strong> Fellowships: 5 (one for e<strong>ac</strong>h sector)<br />
General Information<br />
Duration: one to two mon<strong>th</strong>s (July to October 2001) at AIT.<br />
Fellowship Grant: A grant <strong>of</strong> US$ 1,000 per mon<strong>th</strong> will be <strong>of</strong>fered to <strong>th</strong>e selected Fellows to cover living and o<strong>th</strong>er expenses.<br />
The project will cover travel, fees and research expenses.<br />
