Research Fellowship on SMI Energy- Environmental Issues at AIT
Small and Medium Scale Industries (SMI) in Asia: the Energy, Environment and Climate Interrelations project
promotes activities that mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and other pollutants in the brick and ceramic, desiccated
coconut, foundry, tea and textile sectors in China, India, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. The project is coordinated by the
Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) and funded by the Swedish International Development Co-operation Agency (Sida). Fellowship
programmes are available for qualified persons to conduct research on policy aspects and sector specific research related
to energy- environment issues of SMI. Research terms of reference (ToR), qualifications and other details are given below:
Fellowship: I (Policy Related Issues)
Proposed Activities (ToR):
• Study regulations and incentives on energy conservation and pollution reduction
• Establish policy scenarios that promote Energy Efficient and Environmentally Sound Technologies (E 3 ST) in selected
SMIs to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and other pollution
• Review laws and regulations, standards and policy instruments related to SMIs’ energy use and pollution prevention
and reduction in participating and other countries in the region, and
• Prepare a report based on the above activities
Qualifications:
• Citizen of participating countries; China, India, Philippines, Sri Lanka or Vietnam
• PhD or Master’s degree in energy, environmental economics or policy planning
• Professional experience in the field of SMI from the participating countries
• Demonstrated capability in analyzing data and report preparation

Fellowship: II (Brick and Ceramic, Desiccated Coconut, Foundry, Tea and Textiles)
Proposed Activities (ToR):
• Revise and update the sector report (for details contact smiasia@ait.ac.th)
• Methodology for estimating GHG emissions for selected SMI sectors and comparison with other important sectors in
the country
• Developing scenarios to mitigate GHG emissions and other pollution from selected sectors based on case studies
done by national research institutions
• Impact studies on SMI projects; policy personnel, SMI associations, SMIs, with respect to empowerment, sustainability,
poverty, gender, environment, and knowledge and lessons
Qualifications:
• Good working knowledge of English
• Master’s degree (minimum) with relevant experience in the selected sector
• Citizen of China (Brick and Ceramic), India (Tea), Philippines (Foundry), Sri Lanka (Desiccated coconut) and Vietnam
(Textile)
Number of Fellowships: 5 (one for each sector)
General Information
Duration: one to two months (July to October 2001) at AIT.
Fellowship Grant: A grant of US$ 1,000 per month will be offered to the selected Fellows to cover living and other expenses.
The project will cover travel, fees and research expenses.
