Reduce, Reuse, Recycle <strong>Knowledge</strong> <strong>Hub</strong> (<strong>3R</strong>KH), under the patronage of the <strong>Asian</strong><br />

Development Bank, aims to support and strengthen Asia-Pacific’s regional capacity on<br />

generat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>novative development concepts and technologies on <strong>3R</strong> <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Asian</strong><br />

countries and to promote network<strong>in</strong>g for knowledge dissem<strong>in</strong>ation. The <strong>3R</strong>KH aims to<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>stream new concepts on <strong>3R</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>novation, science, technology, management development,<br />

and related fields for the region and to promote <strong>in</strong>formation exchange.<br />

Amidst other activities, the <strong>3R</strong>KH conducted a research with the objective of identify<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

gaps <strong>in</strong> implement<strong>in</strong>g <strong>3R</strong>-oriented solutions for waste management. The research and its<br />

outcomes were documented <strong>in</strong> the form of a report. The first draft of this report was presented<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>3R</strong>KH Inception Workshop, 7 th Asia Pacific Roundtable for Susta<strong>in</strong>able<br />

Consumption and Production at Hanoi, Viet Nam <strong>in</strong> April 2007. More than 60 delegates from<br />

governments, <strong>in</strong>dustrial sectors, development agencies and academic <strong>in</strong>stitutions took part <strong>in</strong><br />

this event. Additional <strong>in</strong>formation and review comments were solicited from the country<br />

representatives and <strong>in</strong>corporated <strong>in</strong> the report.<br />

This report, titled “<strong>3R</strong> <strong>in</strong> Asia – A <strong>Gap</strong> <strong>Analysis</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Selected</strong> <strong>Asian</strong> <strong>Countries</strong>”, discusses the<br />

prevail<strong>in</strong>g situation <strong>in</strong> manag<strong>in</strong>g urban municipal waste, healthcare waste and e-waste for 15<br />

countries <strong>in</strong> the <strong>Asian</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ent, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g developed nations such as Japan, Korea and<br />

S<strong>in</strong>gapore. The develop<strong>in</strong>g countries considered for the study are Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei<br />

Darussalam, Cambodia, Ch<strong>in</strong>a, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philipp<strong>in</strong>es, Thailand and<br />

Vietnam. The report also discusses the priority areas of concern for each country accord<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

the surveyed data and the status of <strong>3R</strong> technology.<br />

The research <strong>in</strong>dicated that no previous study has been carried out with specific focus on <strong>3R</strong><br />

implementation, policy issues and technology status. Therefore, this report is expected to be a<br />

good start <strong>in</strong> provid<strong>in</strong>g impetus to enhance the exist<strong>in</strong>g good practices and assist <strong>in</strong> plann<strong>in</strong>g<br />

technology support and capacity build<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g countries.<br />
