In the <strong>in</strong>dustrial sector, e-waste is generated<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g the manufactur<strong>in</strong>g and assembl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

processes. The survey done by the M<strong>in</strong>istry of<br />

Industry <strong>in</strong>dicates that e-waste accounts for<br />

about 10,200 tons of waste/year. In 2003 the<br />

amount of e-waste from households <strong>in</strong> Thailand<br />

was referred to be nearly 90,000 tons/year. Thus,<br />

it could be observed that the e-waste from<br />

manufacturers is only 11% of the total e-waste<br />

generated <strong>in</strong> the country. E-waste from the<br />

manufactur<strong>in</strong>g process is not significant <strong>in</strong> the<br />

overall generation. The households’ e-waste is of<br />

primary concern <strong>in</strong> the current management<br />

situation <strong>in</strong> Thailand.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

There are many <strong>in</strong>formal sector recyclers around<br />

Bangkok work<strong>in</strong>g as waste collectors, scrap<br />

dealers, and waste transfer dealers. Most of the<br />

e-waste from households are dismantled and<br />

recovered by these <strong>in</strong>formal sectors. The<br />

<strong>in</strong>formal separators separate recyclable e-waste<br />

materials (60-70%) and sell them to waste<br />

transfer dealers. Wat Suan Kaeo is one of the<br />

important <strong>in</strong>formal separators collect<strong>in</strong>g the ewaste<br />

generated. Waste transfer dealers sell<br />

recyclable parts to the material recycl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustry. Most e-waste activities such as<br />

dismantl<strong>in</strong>g and material recovery are done by<br />

bare hands or with small tools <strong>in</strong> scrap yards or<br />

<strong>in</strong> their own houses.<br />

In Thailand, only 12 <strong>in</strong>dustries carry out ewaste<br />

separation and recycl<strong>in</strong>g activities. All of<br />

the <strong>in</strong>dustries are small scale, us<strong>in</strong>g simple<br />

techniques of dismantl<strong>in</strong>g and separation. The<br />

workers <strong>in</strong> recycl<strong>in</strong>g factories are often be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

exposed to hazardous chemicals by <strong>in</strong>halation<br />

or direct sk<strong>in</strong> contact with the chemicals dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the process of valuable materials recovery.<br />

GAPS FOR IMPLEMENTATION OF <strong>3R</strong><br />

Worldwide, experiences <strong>in</strong>dicate that apply<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>3R</strong>, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle is a lucrative<br />

way of tackl<strong>in</strong>g waste management issues. The<br />

first step <strong>in</strong> this exercise is an assessment of the<br />

technology options available for implement<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>3R</strong>-based solutions. Proactive policies and<br />

relevant legislations emphasiz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>3R</strong>-based<br />

solutions are vital to achieve a higher success<br />
