If you know a youth who participated in a 4-H youth conference, I encourage you to ask them about their experiences and how it is making a difference in their life. If you don't know a young person who participated, I would ask you to promote and encourage youth you know to attend next year. Sincerely, Dorothy M Freeman, Extension 4-H State Director Apply to Become a 2012-2013 Minnesota State 4-H Ambassador Ambassadors are a team of 30 diverse youth leaders from across the state that represent and serve the youth involved in Minnesota’s 4-H programs. The Ambassadors work together promoting inclusion in 4-H’s programs and encourage youth to become actively involved in their communities. Throughout the year-long term of service, they teach youth and adults about important topics such as leadership, diversity, and teamwork. Ambassadors also plan and facilitate several statewide 4-H youth leadership events and assist 4-H youth, staff, volunteers, and other groups with workshops, training sessions, celebrations, and activities. Any Minnesota 4-H member who has completed 10th grade by summer 2013 and has at least one year of 4-H eligibility remaining in the 2013-2014 school year is eligible to apply. Five ambassadors will be selected to serve a second year. Selection of State 4-H Ambassadors will be done by the State Ambassador PDC leaders in late April/early May at designated sites. These sites will be determined and sent to applying youth. Selected Ambassadors must be available for State 4-H Ambassador Orientation June 25-27, 2013. Upcoming Events for Various Animal Project Areas If you are in any of the following areas, please consider attending one of these events. If you have any questions on any of the events, please contact your local 4-H Program Coordinator. Also, a reminder to any members with livestock projects, your Animal ID’s need to be submitted to the county office no later than May 15 (Market Beef deadline of February 15 has passed.) RABBIT: Beltrami County 4-H is hosting a Rabbit Fun Show at the Beltrami County Fairgrounds in Bemidji on March 17. Registration and vendors open at 10:00 am with the show from Noon-5:00 pm. The cost is $2.00 per rabbit. If you have any questions contact Kari or the Beltrami County 4-H office at 218-444-5722. The Heart of the Lakes RBA Rabbit Shows will be held on April 20 at the Fergus Falls fairgrounds in Fergus Falls, MN. This is a double open and youth show sanctioned with the ARBA & MSRBA. GOAT: A meat goat training will be held on April 27 at the R & J Horse Arena in Verndale for 4-H meat goat families and potential judges. The morning session from 8:30 am-1:15 pm will cover showmanship, fitting and grooming, nutrition and health, project selection, and animal identification. The afternoon session from 12:30-5:30 pm will be dedicated to the judge’s education.

There will be classes available for Breeding Heifers, Market Heifers, Beef Steers and Dairy Steers. Registration information can be found online at this link. Note: All 4-Hers may attend project meetings or recreational 4-H activities offered in any county, unless otherwise indicated. Becker County Becker County Fair Date Set 2013 Becker County Fair dates have been set. Mark your calendars for August 7-10. Other dates have been set as well (All events held in Detroit Lakes): July 22: Demonstration and Food Revue; 3:00 pm at Union Central July 25: Cat and Pet Show; 2:30 pm at Essentia Health Oak Crossing July 29: Clothing and Fashion Revue; 3:00 pm at Union Central August 17: Dog Show; 9:00 am at Lucky Dog Becker County 4-H Council Meeting The Becker County 4-H Council meeting will be held on March 4, 6:30 pm at the Extension Office. Included on the agenda are pre-fair events, bike rodeo, livestock opportunities and more. Buffalo Badgers are scheduled to provide refreshments. Fruit and Watkins Fundraising Wrapping Up Fruit and Watkins Fundraising is wrapping up. Total sales are due to the Extension Office on March 4 from the club leaders and independent families. Delivery of the fruit and Watkins orders will be on March 26 at the Detroit Lakes Hockey Arena. Please contact your club leader or the Extension Office if you have any questions. Shooting Sports Archery Schedule Winter 2013 Shooting Sports Archery events are still happening. The upcoming dates are March 3 and 17 at the Detroit Lakes Boys & Girls Club, 5:00-7:00 pm. If you have any questions contact Randy Wold at 218-841-5325 or Kari Sayer at 218-846-7328 or hend0579@umn.edu. Animal available Free to a Becker County 4-H member is a three- month-old male purebread, registered red fox/yellow Labrador Retriever. If you are interested, please call or email Kari for more information. The puppy is up-to-date with shots and a small transfer fee if you would like the animal registered. Family Livestock Meeting A Family Livestock meeting will be held on April 11, 6:30 pm at the Extension Office to turn in animal affidavits and animal ID’s. The focus will be to cover new information and answer questions as well as assist with getting all required documents submitted. Annual Bike Rodeo Becker County 4-H is sponsoring the Detroit Lakes annual Bike Rodeo on April 27, 9:30- 11:30 am at the Detroit Lakes Kent Freeman Arena. Join the fun and have a chance to win a brand new bike. If you are interested in helping, contact Kari at the Extension Office. Sheep and Swine Project Members If you are interested in exhibiting a sheep or pig at the county fair, you are encouraged to apply for the sheep and pig giveaway contest. Any 4- Her (including previous Cloverbuds) is welcome to apply even if they have shown in previous years. The award will be up to $100 toward their purchase of the animal. Applications are due by April 15 and are available here.
