County Fair Mailing 

A mailing was sent out to all 4-H members with 

the County Fair information in it. If you did not 

receive this mailing the information and links 

are in this newsletter. We have several new 

members this year. If you do not understand 

the process or have questions feel free to call 

Cindy at the office at 651-277-0150 with your 

questions. 

Dog Training 

Dog training has begun for the year. Members 

meet each week on Tuesday with their dogs at 

6:30 at Checkerboard Park. Dues are $25 per 

child with a maximum of $35 per family. Dog 

training will continue throughout the summer. 

Livestock Quality Assurance & 

Ethics 

Remember, anyone bringing an animal to the 

fair with the exception of pets, horses and dogs 

is required to complete Livestock Quality 

Assurance & Ethics training every 3 years. This 

must be done before the fair registration is due. 

If you do not do this you will not be allowed to 

show an animal at the fair—county or state 

included.

This year’s shooting sports dates have been set. 

They are as follows: 

Trap: ($1.00 per round) Osceola Rod and

Don’t forget that records for the horse project

4-H Horse Fundraiser WSCA 

Show 

The WSCA Show will be held Saturday, June 9 th 

at the Chisago County Fairgrounds. 

4-H Ride Nights 

4-H Ride Nights will be held Thursdays in June 

at the Chisago County Fairgrounds.




Club Participation Wanted 

The Chisago City Farmer’s Market is looking for 

clubs to participate. They would like clubs to 

advertise 4-H and look for new members. What 

a great way to reach people in the community! 

They will have a Farmer’s Market every Friday 

from 2 pm to 6 pm from June 15 th to October 5 th 

in Moberg Park. If your club would like to 

participate in one or more weeks please contact 

Cindy at 651-277-0150. 

East Central MN 4-H Summer 

Camp (Formerly PICCKMW) 

Have your child experience new adventures at 

summer camp! All youth completing grades 

fourth through eighth are invited to attend 

camp sponsored by the University of Minnesota 

Extension 4-H program. Camp will be held June 

18-20 in the beautiful St. Croix State Park at the 

Norway Point group camp grounds (located east 

of Hinckley). 

Youth will have a great time during outdoor fun, 

crafts, swimming, campfire, games and much 

more. Campers sleep in cabins with trained teen 

counselors supported by screened adults and 

University of Minnesota Staff. 

The price of camp is $85/child. First time 

campers receive 1/2 of their fee back after 

camp and repeat campers receive 1/4 or their 

fee back. You may come to the office and fill 

out a request for county funds form to receive 

this. Simply come into the office and we will 

give you the form. Or get it online at

campers receive a photo memory CD filled with 

pictures from camp, which is included in the 

price of camp. Families can also select to send 

their child to camp by bus for a small additional

Demonstrations 

You have two opportunities to give a 

demonstration at the fair. New dates have been 

set so please read carefully. On Wednesday, July 

11 th you may give a demonstration at the 

County Fair between 2 and 7 pm. You will be 

judged by the Performing Arts judge. Call the 

office and set up a time by June 22 nd . On 

Saturday, July 14 th at the fair you may also give 

a demonstration. You can sign up for a time 

between 2 and 7 pm on a sign up list at the 

county fair. 

Performing Arts 

Please call and register for a time to give your 

performance for the Performing Arts judge on 

Wednesday, July 11. You may perform between 

2 and 7 pm. Call the office and set up a time by 

June 22 nd . 

Clean-Up Night 

Clean-up night at the Chisago County 

fairgrounds will be held on June 25 beginning at 

6:00 pm. Panola Rockets, Independents, 

Almelund All Stars, Northern Lights, Excelsior, 

Heightseekers, and Club of the Dalles will be 

helping with clean-up and set-up. 4-H Building 

superintendents will also be expected to be 

there to set up your project area. On Monday, 

July 16, North Stars and Golden Gophers will 

be helping with the clean-up after the fair. 

Animal Science Night 

Animal Science Night will be held on June 28 th at 

the Chisago County fairgrounds. A free supper 

will begin at 6:00 pm. Livestock members will 

then help to set-up the rabbit/poultry building, 

the dairy/beef building, the horse barn, the 

swine/sheep barn and the goat/llama barn. 

Important information will be given about the 

auction. This is also a good time for new




members and livestock exhibitors to find out 

what they need for the fair, what to expect, etc. 

Please mark your calendars now for this fun 

and important event. All livestock and horse 

members are expected to attend. 

Volunteer Positions Open 

I absolutely need some people to volunteer for 

these positions. Fair positions can be divided 

among several people so you just need to take a 

shift. Please call the office at 651-277-0150. 

Someone to be in charge of the Shop and 

Aerospace area at the fair 

Someone to be in charge of the 

Poster/Animal Science area at the fair. 

People to be judges assistants and help 

display the projects at the fair. 

People to be on the fundraising committee 

Someone to be in charge of the sound 

system at the fair. This requires that you 

be at all events that use the speakers…all 

animal shows, style show, showmanship 

round up, etc Can be youth or adult 

Style Show 

The style show for judging will take place on 

July 2 at 3:00 pm. It will be held at the Senior 

Center in North Branch. Please mark this 

important date on your calendar. And start 

looking for that purchased garment or begin 

sewing. The date will come up fast once school

Fair Dates 

The 2012 Chisago County Fair dates have been 

set. The fair will be held July 11 th through the 

15 th . The Carcass Show will be held July 17 and 

the Dog Show will be July 21.

Dorm Information 

The County Fair has a dorm to stay in. It is 

available to all 4-H members and is chaperoned 

by adult leaders. We also have some youth




grades 10-12 who are dorm counselors. If you 

would like to sign up to be a counselor please 

let Cindy know at 651-277-0150. If you are a 

youth counselor, you stay in the dorm for free 

and also help with meal serving, helping 

homesick members, cleaning etc. Find out more

Signing Up For 4-H County Fair 

Horse Show 

To sign up for horse for the County Fair you 

need to sign up for the horse items listed in the 

premium book and put them on the fair 

registration form. The premium book can be

Attention Club Leaders

Cafeteria Work Schedule 

Since we will have two food stands this year 

(The old Eagles Building and the food trailer) I 

had no choice but to add and re-arrange shifts 

so that we could be open until 10. The number 

of shifts you have is determined by the size of 

your club. There are some changes in the 

number of times you work because the sizes of 

clubs have changed. Remember, everyone 

should be serving 2 hours in the cafeteria and it 

is mandatory for those going to the State Fair, 

State Shoot, State Dog, and State Horse. Records 

will be kept. It is as follows:

Pulse Points 

Take a moment and take your 

club’s “pulse”. Each month we 

will have a monthly tip for your club, activity, or 

learning opportunity. It will be a way to see if 

your group is practicing great youth 

development. Talk about these “Pulse Points” 

with your group and see where you excel and 

where you can improve. 

June “Pulse Point” 

The area where you meet is free of health and 

safety hazards. It is clean and there is adequate 

lighting and ventilation. It is normally a 

comfortable temperature. 

Talking Point: What can you do to improve the 

environment at your meetings? (Safe 

Environment) 

Dear 4-H Youth, Families 

and Volunteers: 

Summer is here and with summer, 

comes an opportunity for communities 

around the state to attend their county fairs and 

see the learning and accomplishments that 4- 

H'ers have achieved this year! In the 4-H youth 

development program, 4-H'ers explore subjects 

they are passionate about – including watershed 

science, robotics, agriculture, wildlife biology, 

performing arts and photography. Through 

hands-on learning, 4-H'ers achieve skills that 

will support their success throughout their lives. 

I hope you encourage your neighbors who may 

not know about 4-H, to go to their county fair 

and see how 4-H youth are making a difference 

in their community, whether through their 

learning or their community service 

contributions. 

4-H continues to explore new ways to enhance 

our support of 4-H youth and families to 

improve their experiences. Last year, we piloted 

a text messaging system at the State Fair to 

broadcast event reminders, schedule updates, 

mealtimes, and other administrative 

announcements that youth and families could 

receive on cell phones. 

This system was well received. Over the past 

year, we have used and tested it at other 4-H 

events and made improvements based on 

feedback. 4-H youth and families participating 

at State Fair this year will again have the option 

to receive these text message announcements 

on their cell phones. Watch for more 

information about how to sign up throughout 

the summer in the 4-H Clover Update (or ask 

your local program coordinator for more 

details). 

I look forward to another great summer of 

learning and achievement from our 4-H 

members, families, volunteers and staff, and 

hope to see you at the fair!

Dog Supersession 

4-H dog owners bring their dogs to this training 

and there are workshops for youth age third 

grade and older, their families, trainers, 

potential trainers, youth and adult leaders. 

Participants can select from three areas: Agility, 

Obedience and Showmanship and will learn tips 

and techniques for showing their dog, how to 

handle problems, how to groom a dog properly 

and much more. 2012 4-H Dog Supersession 

will be June 23-24, 2012 at the Scott County 

fairgrounds, Jordan, MN. More details can be

2012 MN 4-H Shooting Sports 

& Wildlife 

Reminder: There was a rule change announced 

in 2011 for the State Shooting Sports & Wildlife 

Invitational. Please ensure that all coaches and 

youth are aware of this change. 

Members must complete 15 hours of online 

training per discipline with 8 hours of annual 

updates, and 8 annual hours of wildlife 

education to participate at the MN 4-H State 

Shooting Sports & Wildlife event in September. 

Training MUST be conducted by 4-H certified 

coaches, certified in the discipline(s) they are 

instructing. 

(This change is an increase in hours – from 5 to 

8 hours of annual updates. This means that if a 

youth spent 15 hours of training their first year 

in a discipline, they must now have 8 hours of 

training in that discipline each additional year.) 

2012 MN 4-H Shooting Sports 

& Wildlife Invitational 

The 2012 MN 4-H Shooting Sports & Wildlife 

Invitational will be held in Martin County 

(Fairmont) on September 7-9. 4-H members 

who are involved in their county 4-H Shooting 

Sports and Wildlife programs will participate in 

a variety of events such as BB Gun, Archery, Air 

Rifle, Air Pistol, Trap, .22 Rifle, Black Powder 

and Wildlife events. In order to participate, 

members must work with a certified 4-H 

instructor and complete 15 hours of training in 

a discipline and 8 hours of wildlife education. 

The state 4-H Shooting Sports Wildlife 

Invitational is a great way to demonstrate the 

skills learned in a safe environment. Come to 

the Martin County Fairgrounds and Fairmont 

Trap Club in Martin County (located on 

Interstate 90 – Fairmont exit) on September 7-9 

to see the 4-H members in action. To learn more 

about the 4-H Shooting Sports Wildlife Program, 

or to see the rules and registration information, 

contact your Extension Office or visit the

Extension Office on July 18 th . 

LQA&E Policy 

All youth participating as a State Fair livestock 

exhibitor in beef, dairy, sheep, swine, poultry, 

rabbits, meat and dairy goats, and lama must 

have completed a Livestock Quality Assurance 

and Ethics workshop. Certification is good for 

three fair seasons. The level of training required 

is determined by the grade of the youth at the 

time the training takes place. 

Note: Since 2006, pre-State Fair age 4-H’ers are 

recommended to be certified. Some counties do, 

however, require certification of pre-State Fair 

age 4-H’ers for participation at the county fair. 

It should be recognized that county policies 

may be stricter than this state policy.

State Arts-In 2012 

Registration has begun for the 2012 State Arts- 

In. Experience youth development through 

performance art! We need performers, 

costumers, instrumentalists, and technicians!

Animal Science Media State 

Fair Trip 

One or two 4-H’ers per county will be awarded 

an animal science media State Fair trip during 

livestock weekend. They will have the 

opportunity to handle county State Fair 

relations with local media. Contact your local 4- 

H office for more information. 

Catch the Dairy Showcase 

Fever 

State Fair 4-H dairy cattle exhibitors who receive 

a purple or blue ribbon in their class will qualify 

for the Showcase. Points will be earned for their 

involvement and success with the State Fair 

interview process, dairy project bowl, dairy 

judging contest and showmanship. Youth must 

also complete an online leadership portfolio 

that awards points in the areas of 4-H and dairy 

industry involvement and leadership, along with 

community, school or church involvement. The 

portfolios will be judged by a panel of 

anonymous judges. All of these things will be 

compiled in a scorecard format and the top 25 

applicants will be announced Saturday evening 

following the dairy show. For more information

4-H Poultry Prince & Princess 

Contest 

State Fair 4-H poultry exhibitors have the 

opportunity to participate in a $1000 MN 4-H 

and Gold-n-Plump scholarship contest. The 

Minnesota 4-H Poultry Prince and Princess 

Contest at the Minnesota State Fair is an 

exciting opportunity for 4-H youth to be 

recognized for their poultry knowledge, 

experience, leadership and confidence. To enter, 

youth must be participating in a 4-H Poultry 

Interview, quiz, or showmanship at 2012 

Minnesota State Fair, participating in the 4-H 

Chicken BBQ Contest, and have completed 

grade 9 and up as of 2012. For more
