In 1981, deep in the wilderness

Lines attach directly to pole structures

Guylines, also developed by Exped, are
ultralight and static with a tear force
of 400 lbs/180 kg. This prevents the
cord from stretching and tearing in high
winds which otherwise leads to flapping
of the fly and structure and ultimately to
fracture of the poles.

vestibules. Vestibules provide am-
ple space for storage and cooking (If
cooking inside the vestibule, always prime
and light stoves at a safe distance
from the tent). Models with dual vestibules

and eliminate “trauma by kick“ to
a sleeping tent mate. At least one inner
door is large enough for two people to
sit next to one another.
> Totally waterproof shelters with
factory taped seams, polyester core/
cotton wrap thread, and taped or seamless
bathtub floors.
> Canopies can be unhooked to
increase vestibule space. Loops and
pockets keep the tent tidy.
> Integrity: Keep it simple and
reduce weight - care is taken to use
simple, proven designs and hardware.
Examples include toggle and loop
connectors and adjustable pole tension
pockets. Of course, field repairability
goes without saying!
> Natural, pleasing colors: warm
yellow interiors are pleasant and relaxing,
even when stormy weather
keeps you inside the tent.
Earthy, green color rainflies blend with
nature; or bright terracotta color rainflies
are easily spotted in bad weather
or from a distance.
> Multi-functional and simple use:
Inner canopies can stay attached to
rainfly at all times;
Rainfly can be used alone for storage or
for basic shelter;
Inner canopy can be used alone in clear
weather, with or without a tarp cover
(pole pockets at the corners enable this
configuration);
Unhook part of the canopy to increase
the space beneath the fly;
Numerous zipper sliders allow the door
to be opened in many different positions.
> Freestanding and spacious:
Most models are either freestanding or
require just a few stakes to ensure that
the tent is not carried off by wind. Such
designs enable Exped tents to be easily
moved to a new location or to be
cleaned by shaking overhead. Developed
by Exped, the “ridge tunnel tent“ is
a new type of structure that combines a
Tunnel design‘s maximum usable space
with the Dome‘s freestanding capability.
> Easy maintenance:
Tent poles‘ end caps remove easily to
adjust the shock cord in changing weather
conditions or to replace a broken
pole section.
Pole tension pockets are made with
strong, but simple materials (webbing
and a small pole section). In the event
of a failure, such materials can be repaired
any place and do not depend
upon plastic parts that can break at the
worst times.
All Exped tents include spare parts:
zipper sliders, adhesive patch fabric,
and emergency pole repair segments.
> Easy packing:
Specific length pole sections allow the
packed tent to fit square into most large
packs, and uniform length pole sections
mean that just one section can address
most any situation;
Long, narrow accessory pockets occupy
small spaces when packed;
Side entry packsacks surround the
rolled tent without effort or strain.

Quality materials:
In the non-Extreme series tents the
rainfly fabric is strong, lightweight
ripstop polyester: UV-resistant and
meets CPAI-84 flame retardant guidelines.
Extra strong PU coatings on the
fabric‘s underside offer long wearing
waterproofness.
In the Extreme series the fly fabric is a
strong, super lightweight, double
silicone coated ripstop nylon with improved
UV- and tear-resistance. However,
silicone coated fabrics do not meet
CPAI-84 fire retardant guidelines. (See
tent models for specifics).
All Floors are made from durable, taffeta
nylon with heavy PU coatings; have
a waterproof rating of 14+ PSI (10,000+
mm water column) and are either factory
seam taped or seamless to
maximize strength.
Mosquito netting is an ultra fine, very
UV-resistant No-See-Um polyester.

Poles are state-of-the-art extruded,
seamless aircraft DAC 7001-T6 aluminum
- very rigid but soft enough to yield
in strong wind. DAC poles snap back to
position without breakage or damage to
the fly. And DAC poles are less likely to
burr if they do snap together.
Reliable YKK zippers in the fly and canopy
are sewn smooth side out to reduce
exposure to dirt, which could cause
premature wear.
Aircraft aluminum stakes are provided
in two grades: V-profile stakes for
hard ground; ultra lightweight, U-profile
stakes for soft earth.
Ample guylines include adjustable tensioners,
especially developed by Exped,
that secure around most fixed objects
without complicated knots. Key lines
are factory pre mounted and provided
with Exped‘s own Cord Stuffsacks (also
available separately).
Guylines, also developed by Exped,
are ultralight and static with a tear force
of 400 lbs/180 kg. This prevents the
cord from stretching and tearing in high
winds which otherwise leads to flapping
of the fly and structure and ultimately to
fracture of the poles. The guylines
have a Dyneema core and polyester
mantle. Dyneema is 15x stronger than
steel and 40% stronger than Kevlar of
the same weight. A reflective thread has
been spun into the mantle for visibility
in the dark. Sheaths and cores can
be separated to increase usable length.
Zipper pulls glow, and are color coded
and reflective for easy handling.
Quality workmanship:
Lap-felled seams (4 inter-wrapped fabric
layers) are single or double factory
taped. Stress points are reinforced with
extra-duty patches and are sewn with
crossover stitching to better distribute
forces over larger areas of fabric.
Thread used throughout is ‘polyester
core, cotton wrap’ that expands
when wet to fill needle holes in edges,
ground reinforcements and silicone treated
fabrics.
> Warranty and service: Exped tents
carry a 5 year, limited warranty on defects
in workmanship and materials. At
its discretion, Exped will repair or replace
any part that fails due to manufacturing
defect. Failures due to normal
wear, negligence, accidents and acts of
nature can usually be repaired for a nominal
charge. Please see your outdoor
retailer for details or contact Exped.
> And why not cheaper? The main
costs lie in the materials used. Sure we
could reduce the costs by half using
cheaper components with the result
that the product would be half as good
or even irresponsible: Good looks
under the shops lights and frustration
out in the field.

3D baffle design: Horizontal and vertical

cold spots. Most bags have over
30 baffles. Baffle walls , constructed of
fine tricot mesh, easily stand up to the
strain of washing.
Smart accessories: sleeping bags include
a storage sack of ultrafine, No-
See-Um netting that does double duty
as bug protection or as a laundry bag.
Stuff sacks, when included, fold into
themselves to save space.
Complete sleeping system: Two bags
paired together create a flexible system
that adapts to a variety of adventure
situations. Consider a down inner
with either a synthetic outer or a
bivy bag. Hence we considered compatibility
and sizing when designing the
sleeping bags. Some bags are cut large
to accept a second, inner bag. The
WB-series bags do it all: insulation and
comfort in a waterproof and breathable
design.
Optimal fit: a complete range of sleeping
bags to fit most adults, depending
on body size and sleeping behaviour.
Remember: an improperly sized
sleeping bag can be cold if too large or
tight, so try it for fit before buying. Also
consider the mat when choosing the
sleeping bag. We state temperature ratings
for our mats to help in finding the
temperature range you may require.
Tested materials: Exped uses well tested
materials from both lab and field.
Independent labs use internationally recognized
standard tests to evaluate
down fill power and quality, water vapor
transmission, water column, water repellency,
abrasion and tear resistance.
Down tests are offered by the renowned
IDLF (Salt Lake City, Utah, USA) with
each production run. (Test results available
on request).
Field tests are conducted by outdoor
professionals, including Erhard Loretan
(Himalaya expeditionist with all 14 8000
m summits), Christof Hagen (wilderness
and survival expert), Serge Lambert
(professional mountain guide with
over 30 years of experience), and, Martin
Epp (mountain guide and wilderness
professional). Of course, numerous other
outdoor experts and the Exped team
also contribute.

Temperature ratings as of EN 13597:
The Euro-Norm temperature rating for
sleeping bags is designed to provide
comparability between different bags
and across brands. A certified laboratory
measures the heat loss in a climate
chamber using a dummy attached to 16
sensors. Men and women have different
comfort experiences when exposed
to the same temperature conditions,
hence there is a different comfort rating
given for women and men. The “Lower
Extreme” temperature is defined as the
point at which a man gets cold but
without shivering. The “Upper Comfort”
temperature is defined as the point at
which one begins to feel so hot that the
bag must be opened to vent. Note: The
results for a given sleeping bag can vary
between different individuals.

Overall goose down filled bags are the
better choice, but synthetics performe
better in wet conditions.
But now, at least this dilemma is history,
because Exped has delivered a unique,
waterproof and breathable goose
downfill collection of sleeping bags: Ibis
WB, Woodpecker WB, Swan WB and
Arctic Goose WB!
Exped solved this problem by replacing
sewn seams with high-frequency
welded seams. Thousands of needleholes
that allowed water to reach the
goose down and rendered the bag useless
are now gone! Warm air is stopped
from being pushed out during sleep.
And seams are double welded for added
strength and durability. This technology
is invented and patented by Exped,
however licenced to other highquality
brands.
The WBs are both waterproof and vapor
permeable. Even in the worst weather
conditons, there are no problems
with condensation due to vapor emitted
by the body. Still a skeptic? Then don‘t
take our word for it! Highly respected,
outdoor experts were eager to test a
“WB“ bag, and all were quickly sold!

Never underestimate the sleeping mat; in fact it is more important
than the sleeping bag! To properly insulate against cold ground, a
mat should provide both insulation and comfort that comes from
full body support. Consider the following when choosing a mat: The
mat‘s R-value (lab test); the mats‘ temperature rating and your cur-
rent sleeping bag. Further criteria are weight and packed size. Fit
should also be considered as side sleepers (70% of the population)
can choose a narrower and shorter mat than people that sleep on
their back (20%) or on their stomach (10%).
