Story of the Exped
Goose
In 1981, deep in the wilderness
of the Canadian
Northwest Territories,
Exped founders Andi
and Heidi Brun lived
for 9 months using simple
tools and food gathered
from nature. Nothing
impressed them more
than the serene movements
of the wild geese
flying over head.
Exped means Expedition Equipment.
Since 1997, the Exped Team has designed
and built the highest quality, specialized
gear for the active, outdoor enthusiast.
Equipment designed to appeal
to everyone from the casual hiker
of the Appalachian Trail to the expedition
mountaineer in the Himalayas. Every
user expects his equipment to meet exacting
requirements, and at Exped, we
build products intended to surpass those
expectations!
FEATURES
d
c >
a > Fast setups and ease of use:
- slide poles into sleeves
- secure poles into pockets
- tension. And that’s it!
Continuous sleeves allow poles to easily
pass through intersections.
Canopies are factory mounted, and just
a few stakes and guylines are needed
to pitch any Exped tent.
< g
Attention paid to every detail...
e
>
>
f
Color coded poles and sleeves eliminate
guesswork.
Reflective, glow-in-the-dark zipper pulls
are easy to locate.
Round shaped doors are easily operated
with just one hand.
There are two types of pole sleeves on
the fly sheet: Exterior sleeves for easy
setups or interior sleeves (Orion) for re-
< a
< b
duced resistance to rain, wind or snow.
Models with the Exped-developed “flat
pole sleeves“ offer advantages of both
interior and exterior sleeves.
b > New adjustable floor loops made
of Dyneema cord for easy placing of the
stakes. Now you have a radius of up to
8“ / 20 cm at your disposal in which to
find the ideal spot for the stake.
c > Open loops, inverted for easy guyline
attachment.
d > Strong and weatherproof: bombproof
shelters are created by combining
wind shedding designs with strategically
placed, dual guy points on each sleeve.
Lines attach directly to pole structures
for superior stability in any weather.
Guylines, also developed by Exped, are
ultralight and static with a tear force
of 400 lbs/180 kg. This prevents the
cord from stretching and tearing in high
winds which otherwise leads to flapping
of the fly and structure and ultimately to
fracture of the poles.
e > Enhanced aerodynamics with Flat
or Interior Pole Sleeve designs.
f > Excellent ventilation: even in rainy
conditions, condensation is kept to a
minimum by large opposed vents. This
design promotes a chimney effect to
maintain air circulation.
> No-See-Um panels on the
canopy‘s doors adjust from inside the
tent to control ventilation. Careful attention
to design ensures there is no contact
between fly and canopy.
> Our single wall tents are made
of waterproof and breathable fabrics.
(VentAir for Polaris and EPIC for Vega)
g > Loads of space: unique Exped designs
maximize usable interior space
with steep side walls and large, protected
vestibules. Vestibules provide am-
ple space for storage and cooking (If
cooking inside the vestibule, always prime
and light stoves at a safe distance
from the tent). Models with dual vestibules
and entrances offer easy access
and eliminate “trauma by kick“ to
a sleeping tent mate. At least one inner
door is large enough for two people to
sit next to one another.
> Totally waterproof shelters with
factory taped seams, polyester core/
cotton wrap thread, and taped or seamless
bathtub floors.
> Canopies can be unhooked to
increase vestibule space. Loops and
pockets keep the tent tidy.
> Integrity: Keep it simple and
reduce weight - care is taken to use
simple, proven designs and hardware.
Examples include toggle and loop
connectors and adjustable pole tension
pockets. Of course, field repairability
goes without saying!
> Natural, pleasing colors: warm
yellow interiors are pleasant and relaxing,
even when stormy weather
keeps you inside the tent.
Earthy, green color rainflies blend with
nature; or bright terracotta color rainflies
are easily spotted in bad weather
or from a distance.
> Multi-functional and simple use:
Inner canopies can stay attached to
rainfly at all times;
Rainfly can be used alone for storage or
for basic shelter;
Inner canopy can be used alone in clear
weather, with or without a tarp cover
(pole pockets at the corners enable this
configuration);
Unhook part of the canopy to increase
the space beneath the fly;
Numerous zipper sliders allow the door
to be opened in many different positions.
> Freestanding and spacious:
Most models are either freestanding or
require just a few stakes to ensure that
the tent is not carried off by wind. Such
designs enable Exped tents to be easily
moved to a new location or to be
cleaned by shaking overhead. Developed
by Exped, the “ridge tunnel tent“ is
a new type of structure that combines a
Tunnel design‘s maximum usable space
with the Dome‘s freestanding capability.
> Easy maintenance:
Tent poles‘ end caps remove easily to
adjust the shock cord in changing weather
conditions or to replace a broken
pole section.
Pole tension pockets are made with
strong, but simple materials (webbing
and a small pole section). In the event
of a failure, such materials can be repaired
any place and do not depend
upon plastic parts that can break at the
worst times.
All Exped tents include spare parts:
zipper sliders, adhesive patch fabric,
and emergency pole repair segments.
> Easy packing:
Specific length pole sections allow the
packed tent to fit square into most large
packs, and uniform length pole sections
mean that just one section can address
most any situation;
Long, narrow accessory pockets occupy
small spaces when packed;
Side entry packsacks surround the
rolled tent without effort or strain.
9
Quality materials:
In the non-Extreme series tents the
rainfly fabric is strong, lightweight
ripstop polyester: UV-resistant and
meets CPAI-84 flame retardant guidelines.
Extra strong PU coatings on the
fabric‘s underside offer long wearing
waterproofness.
In the Extreme series the fly fabric is a
strong, super lightweight, double
silicone coated ripstop nylon with improved
UV- and tear-resistance. However,
silicone coated fabrics do not meet
CPAI-84 fire retardant guidelines. (See
tent models for specifics).
All Floors are made from durable, taffeta
nylon with heavy PU coatings; have
a waterproof rating of 14+ PSI (10,000+
mm water column) and are either factory
seam taped or seamless to
maximize strength.
Mosquito netting is an ultra fine, very
UV-resistant No-See-Um polyester.
10
Poles are state-of-the-art extruded,
seamless aircraft DAC 7001-T6 aluminum
- very rigid but soft enough to yield
in strong wind. DAC poles snap back to
position without breakage or damage to
the fly. And DAC poles are less likely to
burr if they do snap together.
Reliable YKK zippers in the fly and canopy
are sewn smooth side out to reduce
exposure to dirt, which could cause
premature wear.
Aircraft aluminum stakes are provided
in two grades: V-profile stakes for
hard ground; ultra lightweight, U-profile
stakes for soft earth.
Ample guylines include adjustable tensioners,
especially developed by Exped,
that secure around most fixed objects
without complicated knots. Key lines
are factory pre mounted and provided
with Exped‘s own Cord Stuffsacks (also
available separately).
Guylines, also developed by Exped,
are ultralight and static with a tear force
of 400 lbs/180 kg. This prevents the
cord from stretching and tearing in high
winds which otherwise leads to flapping
of the fly and structure and ultimately to
fracture of the poles. The guylines
have a Dyneema core and polyester
mantle. Dyneema is 15x stronger than
steel and 40% stronger than Kevlar of
the same weight. A reflective thread has
been spun into the mantle for visibility
in the dark. Sheaths and cores can
be separated to increase usable length.
Zipper pulls glow, and are color coded
and reflective for easy handling.
Quality workmanship:
Lap-felled seams (4 inter-wrapped fabric
layers) are single or double factory
taped. Stress points are reinforced with
extra-duty patches and are sewn with
crossover stitching to better distribute
forces over larger areas of fabric.
Thread used throughout is ‘polyester
core, cotton wrap’ that expands
when wet to fill needle holes in edges,
ground reinforcements and silicone treated
fabrics.
> Warranty and service: Exped tents
carry a 5 year, limited warranty on defects
in workmanship and materials. At
its discretion, Exped will repair or replace
any part that fails due to manufacturing
defect. Failures due to normal
wear, negligence, accidents and acts of
nature can usually be repaired for a nominal
charge. Please see your outdoor
retailer for details or contact Exped.
> And why not cheaper? The main
costs lie in the materials used. Sure we
could reduce the costs by half using
cheaper components with the result
that the product would be half as good
or even irresponsible: Good looks
under the shops lights and frustration
out in the field.

VELA I
Enter... the Zipfree door.
> Versatility: all Exped
tents allow the components
(canopy and rainfly)
to be used separately.
As an example you
can combine Vela I‘s fly
with an Exped DownMat
and a WB sleeping bag
when going light. Use the
canopy alone or covered
with an Exped Tarp.
To enjoy the scenery, roll
one or both fly ends toward
the center.
c >
b >
e
>
> New Zipfree door:
just pull the cord to raise
the door - no zipper to
snag or admit water. Of
course, no zipper saves
weight! And without the
obvious entrance, Vela I
offers improved safety
from quick thefts of opportunity.
< d
< a
> Quick setup: slide the
single, central pole
through its Flat Pole
Sleeve and seat the ends
into grommets, then tension
the two end poles,
place two stakes and
pull tight.Vela‘s V-shaped
guyline configurations allow
it to be set up anywhere
as it adapts to the
ground contours.
a > Large vestibule, easily accessed from inside Vela I, is large
enough for all your gear. The door is easily raised to offer a view
but still protects from the elements.
b > Large floor plan is especially long and wide, making it possible to
bring gear inside or to help out a stranded, second person.
c > Ventilation is maximized with the storm proof design. The rainfly
can be rolled up from either end, and both ends of the canopy
have easily accessed mesh windows. The roof has a hood
protected vent to improve the chimney effect. The foot end is
aerodynamically shaped to be completely tied down to face high
winds.
d > Tie down loops attach directly to the pole sleeves for maximum
stability in wind.
e > Ingenious flat pole sleeve improves aerodynamics in wind and
rain. Double seams and stitching offer extreme strength.
f > Setup requires just 2 stakes. Additional tie down loops make
Vela I absolutely storm proof!
SOLESTAR
maximum space for the minimalist camper.
inner tent of mosquito
netting, the rainfly rolls
> Vents above the door
and at the rear provide
protected air circulation,
regardless of the weather
outside.
c
a > A small package with loads of space: Designed for one adult, but with room for
two, Solestar cuts excess weight. Still, it offers enough space to comfortably
wait out a rainy day, store extra gear, or cook in the vestibule. (If you must cook
inside Solestar, always prime and light stoves at a safe distance from the tent).
b > Solestar stands taut with just two arches and three stakes. Poles and sleeves
are color coded for guess-free setups. Inner tent and rainfly structures are fixed
at the front to reduce both weight and setup time!
c > Front vestibule wings open wide, and with the fly rolled forward, Solestar becomes
a comfortable, bugfree shelter.
d > The rainfly door tucks into a side pocket, opens for improved ventilation, or
functions as an awning when propped with trekking poles. Or, with one side
wing opened, a protected entrance is created.
e > Storm proof: Flat front pole sleeve and rear inner pole minimize wind resistance.
Numerous, reinforced tie down loops increase stability in stormy
weather. In fact, a secured Solestar has withstood a 150 km/h (94 mph) wind
tunnel test.
f > Organization is maintained with an interior laundry line and two storage
pockets.

> Superb venting: Vents
above the doors can be
left open during rain promoting
the chimney effect.
Both vestibules
plays a vital role in the
ventilation of the tent.
grated and foldable corner
poles.
a > Fast setup and teardown: The built in corner poles make pitching
the tent quick and easy. A pair of trekking poles, paddles etc.
(not included) that are part of your gear is all that is needed to
support the tent. Or it can be hung off a branch, boulder or overhang.
b > Adjustable guylines made of super strong, lightweight and reflective
Dyneema cord are premounted in a stormproof V-configuration.
c > Large vestibules on either side for all your gear which can easily
be accessed from inside.
d > Bathtub floor of PU coated taffeta nylon with a 10,000 mm water
column.
e > Both doors can be easily opened with one hand. One entrance is
large enough for two people to sit next to one another, the other
one is smaller for to reduce weight.
> A special tuck stitch seam and polyester core, cotton wrap
thread keeps seams watertight.
> The high vestibule doors allow easy entry without the need to
crawl.
> The wedge shape, the minimal resistance to wind of the tent
walls and ample guyline loops with superstrong Dyneema cords
make the Vega extremely stormproof.
> Straight and replaceable corner poles are easy to fix out in the
field. Adhesive fabric repair patches and zipper gliders are included
for field repairs.

SIRIUS
Fast! Light! Sturdy!
> Sirius Extreme was barely a reality by the time it had received 2 major awards:
Backpacker (USA) bestowed its coveted “Editors‘ Choice 2003“ (first time ever
to a non-US tent company); and Outdoor Magazin (Germany) where it garnered
highest ranking in its in depth tunnel tent test!
“The air is definitely
thinner in the ranks for
top of the line tents, but
Exped, the ingenious
team from Switzerland,
proves with its Sirius
Extreme that other
brands must take them
seriously!“
“... the first tent we’ve seen
that lets us rave about its
low weight without including
qualifying comments about
its tiny living space or high
price. At less than 6 pounds,
it belongs in the bantam
weight class for full-featured
two-person shelters - but
it’s so spacious it feels like a
three-person tent.”
> Flat pole sleeve
reduces resistance to
wind, snow and driving
rain.
a > Fast and easy setup: Exped’s innovative flat sleeves are accessed
from outside the fly and end with adjustable tension pole
pockets. And with the canopy already attached, setup goes
quickly: slide poles into the sleeves; seat ends into the pockets;
tension. With just 4 stakes to set, sleep is not far off!
b > Storm proof: Flat pole sleeve technology makes Sirius more
aerodynamic and strengthens the pole sleeve seams. For bad
weather conditions, ample loops and pre-mounted guylines are
included (stored in Cord Stuffsacks). Double guyline loops grip
the pole sleeves to keep the fly from flapping in bad weather.
c > Large, adjustable door: tucks away into a side pocket; opens
to a variety of positions for ventilation; or, use poles and guylines
for covered protection. A side wing can also be used as an
entrance.
d > Venting and viewing: windows open completely from inside Sirius
and are reinforced with mosquito netting to block the bugs. Windows
help to reduce condensation in rain, and simple supports
of pole repair tube keep the vents open at all times. The rear wall
is made of mesh and a fabric cover. This cover can be unzipped
completely and left at home to save weight. The rear part of the
rainfly can be rolled up for maximized venting.
e > Easy handling all the time: zippers have color coded, reflective,
glow-in-the-dark pulls and are easily operated with one hand.
f > Multi-Use: Canopy is easily unhooked and pushed back for some
extra floor space, or it separates easily for use as a lightweight,
bug shelter. Rainfly offers basic shelter when reduced weight is
needed. And of course used complete... the award winning design
of the Sirius Extreme!

BIG BEAR
the dream house.
Big Bear brings expedition design to family outings: hoop structure minimizes fabric and weight
but maximizes space! Uniquely tapered poles, placing extra strength where needed, are matched
to a load balance requirement!
> Easy setup: No
guesswork because
color coded tent poles
are matched to sleeves
on the rainfly. Smooth
ball ends glide quickly
and seat into reinforced
pockets.
d
>
a
>
< e
> Cord tensioners offer
complete security and
adjustability - all without
knots! Guylines are
black with silver flecks
to improve nighttime
visibility and to reduce
the risk of accidents.
>
f
< b
< c
> Multi-use: To reduce
weight, the outer tent
can be used for basic
shelter. Unhook the inner
tents to create additional
floor space and stuff them
for use as cushions. Use
the extra space to attach
a second small cabin for
more kids or gear.
a > Easy to pitch: 3 color coded, hooped poles slide
into matched sleeves; each pole secures into
a tensioning pocket; corners and guy lines are
staked. The inner tents are delivered pre-attached,
which means that‘s it! No separate parts to
negotiate.
b > Separate spaces large enough for 3 adults and 2
small kids offer many options. Unhook the smaller
shelter to increase the storage area.
c > 2 tie-down loops on each side of the pole sleeves
assure tautness, even in high winds. Guy lines are
factory mounted and store into Cord Stuffsacks.
d > Rainfly is made from ripstop polyester with a heavy
polyurethane coating, which is both UV-resistant
and flame retardant. Seams are factory taped, and
pole sleeves are double taped for added weather
integrity.
e > Tension pole pockets offer easy adjustment to
ensure tautness. Adjustable floor straps allow
pitching on any terrain.
f > 4 adjustable windows improve ventilation and
reduce condensation in wet weather. Windows and
doors are lined with mosquito netting, and window
supports conceal pole repair tubes!
> 7’ high vestibule offers standing space for most
adults. Relax, cook or entertain - it’s that big!
Support the front and left side entrances for
increased ventilation or expanded views.

Arc Tarp is a protective cover for rain or a shady spot for sun. Use it to cover gear,
bikes and visitors. Used with two poles, Arc Tarp creates a large, airy covered area.
Without poles, it is a huge tarp. Width and height adjust depending on configuration.
> Lots of space with
minimal weight: With
little effort, Arc Tarp
attaches quickly to most
tents and creates added
covered space. Ideally
suited for use with Exped
Sirius, Orion, Venus,
Andromeda, Auriga,
Southern Cross, Solestar,
Venus III, Cassiopeia and
Big Bear.
or both poles into sleeves
and fix into the tension
pockets. Secure the cord
web to the tent with
the mini-biners and stake
down the guylines.
That’s it!
> Flat pole sleeves
reduce wind resistance,
while making Arc Tarp
easier to use. Double
stitched, parallel seams
offer extra strength.
>
>
think of it as a huge veranda for your tent
c
Numerous applications:
> Width and height are variable by ad
justing the radius of the arc.
> With two poles, Arc Tarp can be set
up alone to create a large sheltered
area.
> Sun screen for the garden or beach.
> Set up between two tents, two
Arc Tarps facing one another create
a huge family shelter to reduce the
need for a special family tent.
> As a standing height rainfly over a
netting tent, e.g. Southern Cross or
any Exped tent canopy.
> As kitchen tent for cooking or di
ning.
b
a > Fast set up: An adjustable cord running through
loops at the back of the tarp with numerous minicarabiners
attaches easily and tightly to any‚ mother
tent‘.
b > Reinforced guyline loops are set directly onto the
pole sleeves for extra stability. Inner and outer
guyline loops make Arc Tarp extremely versatile.
c > Cord Stuffsacks eliminate the chaos of tangled
lines. Guylines of ultralight and static Dyneema
with a tear force of 400 lbs / 180 kg
d > Fabric is ripstop polyester with a thick PU coating
and factory taped seams. Fabric is also UV
resistant, DWR treated and flame retardant.
> Besides being a tent extension or tarp with poles,
> Arc Tarp is the ideal family tent solution: instead of
Arc Tarp functions well as a lightweight traditional
tarp, when the poles are left at home.
a big family tent, just connect 2 smaller tents with
1 or even 2 Arc Tarps. And when the kids grow
older and want their own tent, let them have one
of the small tents on their own.

REFLECTIVE TENTCORD
> Footprints for ground protection beneath tents.
Available for most Exped tent models a footprint
protects a tent floor from abraison, dirt, water and
sun. Shaped like, but 10 cm (4“) smaller than, the tent
floor to prevent rain from collecting between footprint
and tent floor. Also covers the vestibule floor space to
protect the vestibule from dirt and humidity. Attaches
> New light Gear Loft for tent canopies. Attach to the
tent roof using the adjustable, elastic straps found
in the corners and the center, which prevent it from
sagging under weight. Ideal for storing your glasses or
drying gear. A loop in the middle is ideal for hanging
a light.
> The battle with tangled guylines is finally over: an
ingenious stuff sack just for cords; offers quick cord
storage but leaves them ready to use the next time
without hassles! Just insert your fingers in the sack,
wrap the line and turn inside out. An extra flap keeps
everything from unraveling. Wow! Leave it to Swiss
ingenuity and efficiency!
> Guylines developed by Exped, are ultralight and
static with a tear force of 400 lbs/180 kg. This prevents
the cord from stretching and tearing in high
winds which otherwise leads to flapping of the fly and
structure and ultimately to fracture of the poles.
> Reflective, Exped tent guylines - available in 15 m /
49‘ sections. Intense reflection from any light source.
Prevent night time accidents. Black color stands out
from any natural background, including grass, snow
and sand.
with adjustable, elastic cords. Use Footprint and
tentfly for going extra light!
> Used as a Tarp: a footprint doubles as a tarp against
rain, wind and sun (that is, against excessive exposure
to UV radiation whether at high altitudes or in dry,
sunny places like Australia and New Zealand).
Fits the following tent groups:
e > Bar-tacking: Stress points, such as
zipper ends, are carefully reinforced to
prevent failures, rips and tears.
f > Lining fabrics are comfortable and
soft Texped PR 58 microfiber polyester,
which easily conforms to body shape
and eliminates cold spots. With high
thread counts, all fabrics are natural
ly downproof, unlike cheaper calendered
fabrics that lose softness and vapor
permeability.
g > Tuck-stitch design: Three layers of
fabric, instead of two, are secured together
with the seam fixed beneath the
surface. This special technique prevents
snags and is more abrasion resistant
than simpler, traditional designs. It also
protects the seams from moisture.
h > Loops at the foot end permit the
bag to be secured while airing without
risk of being blown away by wind.
i > Locking zippers feature reflective,
glow-in-the-dark pulls that will not
accidentally open - once set, the zipper
stays set!
j > Inner pockets: convenient storage
for small, personal items. To reduce
weight, some models stuff into those
pockets instead of a separate sack.
k > Draft collar: the clever, double velcro
closure reliably blocks air.
l > Chin guards: soft fabric guard protects
skin from contact with a cold zipper.
33
m > Fabric edges are overlock stitched
to prevent fraying, especially important
with lightweight fabrics.
n > Closed baffles: Highest quality
baffle construction without gaps prevents
down shift between chambers
and uneven fill distribution, which could
otherwise lead to cold spots.
o > Draft tube: zipper is backed by an
oversized draft tube, which is also divided
into three chambers to prevent
down shift. A stiffener prevents the zipper
from snagging.
p > Mat loops: Two loops at hip height
can be used to secure the bag to the
mat. Just tie a string to the loops and
pass under the mat.
Connectivity: Left and right zips connect
2+ bags together, whether for
comfort or emergency warming. YKK #8
left-push zippers (#5 in center zip models)
connect with most high quality
sleeping bags on the market.
3D baffle design: Horizontal and vertical
baffles prevent down shift and eliminate
cold spots. Most bags have over
30 baffles. Baffle walls , constructed of
fine tricot mesh, easily stand up to the
strain of washing.
Smart accessories: sleeping bags include
a storage sack of ultrafine, No-
See-Um netting that does double duty
as bug protection or as a laundry bag.
Stuff sacks, when included, fold into
themselves to save space.
Complete sleeping system: Two bags
paired together create a flexible system
that adapts to a variety of adventure
situations. Consider a down inner
with either a synthetic outer or a
bivy bag. Hence we considered compatibility
and sizing when designing the
sleeping bags. Some bags are cut large
to accept a second, inner bag. The
WB-series bags do it all: insulation and
comfort in a waterproof and breathable
design.
Optimal fit: a complete range of sleeping
bags to fit most adults, depending
on body size and sleeping behaviour.
Remember: an improperly sized
sleeping bag can be cold if too large or
tight, so try it for fit before buying. Also
consider the mat when choosing the
sleeping bag. We state temperature ratings
for our mats to help in finding the
temperature range you may require.
Tested materials: Exped uses well tested
materials from both lab and field.
Independent labs use internationally recognized
standard tests to evaluate
down fill power and quality, water vapor
transmission, water column, water repellency,
abrasion and tear resistance.
Down tests are offered by the renowned
IDLF (Salt Lake City, Utah, USA) with
each production run. (Test results available
on request).
Field tests are conducted by outdoor
professionals, including Erhard Loretan
(Himalaya expeditionist with all 14 8000
m summits), Christof Hagen (wilderness
and survival expert), Serge Lambert
(professional mountain guide with
over 30 years of experience), and, Martin
Epp (mountain guide and wilderness
professional). Of course, numerous other
outdoor experts and the Exped team
also contribute.
Temperature ratings as of EN 13597:
The Euro-Norm temperature rating for
sleeping bags is designed to provide
comparability between different bags
and across brands. A certified laboratory
measures the heat loss in a climate
chamber using a dummy attached to 16
sensors. Men and women have different
comfort experiences when exposed
to the same temperature conditions,
hence there is a different comfort rating
given for women and men. The “Lower
Extreme” temperature is defined as the
point at which a man gets cold but
without shivering. The “Upper Comfort”
temperature is defined as the point at
which one begins to feel so hot that the
bag must be opened to vent. Note: The
results for a given sleeping bag can vary
between different individuals.
Exped stands for quality.
The patented waterpoof WB (WaterBloc)
Series: The agony of choice
is over: Down or Synthetic filled sleeping
bags?
Overall goose down filled bags are the
better choice, but synthetics performe
better in wet conditions.
But now, at least this dilemma is history,
because Exped has delivered a unique,
waterproof and breathable goose
downfill collection of sleeping bags: Ibis
WB, Woodpecker WB, Swan WB and
Arctic Goose WB!
Exped solved this problem by replacing
sewn seams with high-frequency
welded seams. Thousands of needleholes
that allowed water to reach the
goose down and rendered the bag useless
are now gone! Warm air is stopped
from being pushed out during sleep.
And seams are double welded for added
strength and durability. This technology
is invented and patented by Exped,
however licenced to other highquality
brands.
The WBs are both waterproof and vapor
permeable. Even in the worst weather
conditons, there are no problems
with condensation due to vapor emitted
by the body. Still a skeptic? Then don‘t
take our word for it! Highly respected,
outdoor experts were eager to test a
“WB“ bag, and all were quickly sold!
Here‘s a statement from the field:
Christof Hagen, founder of Survival-Outdoor-School
SOS, offers: “Especially
for my igloo courses, where
melt water and condensation are totally
normal, I always used synthetic filled
bags. The Swan WB made me change
my habits.“
Warranty and Repair Service:
Every Exped sleeping bag carries a
5 year, limited warranty. Products with
defects in materials and workmanship
will be repaired or replaced. Please
Rough awakenings lurk when mats malfunction! This is why Exped pays special attention to every high quality detail. To produce
mats that are warm, comfortable, lightweight, durable and pack small is a challenge we take head on. The DownMat is
our ultimate mat that combines all these features, followed by the SynMat and ComfortFoam mat.
b
>
d > Most models have two wide mouth
valves that ensure fast inflation and
simple deflation. Just one quarter turn
closes the valve.
> 100% airtight: Each individual mat
is tested for 48 hours prior to leaving
the factory! The mats withstand 5x the
pressure usually generated during
pumping. A car can drive over the mat
without it bursting. But the mat should
be protected from thorns, heat sources,
fire sparks, humidity in the mat and
rough treatment. There is a compromise
between low weight and durability. But
this can be compensated by care.
Never underestimate the sleeping mat; in fact it is more important
than the sleeping bag! To properly insulate against cold ground, a
mat should provide both insulation and comfort that comes from
full body support. Consider the following when choosing a mat: The
mat‘s R-value (lab test); the mats‘ temperature rating and your cur-
rent sleeping bag. Further criteria are weight and packed size. Fit
should also be considered as side sleepers (70% of the population)
can choose a narrower and shorter mat than people that sleep on
their back (20%) or on their stomach (10%).
Exped DownMats: super comfortable, infinitely warmer and more compact than any
other comparable mat of similar weight. Since down compresses so well, DownMats
also pack very small. Unique pump-packsack doubles as both bellows-pump and pillow.
EMPA, the Swiss Federal Labaratories for Materials Testing and Research, and field tests by
as down compresses extremely well, Downmats packs smaller than other insulated mats.
> For DownMat 9 Exped received the
2002/3 European Outdoor Award,
Europe‘s most prestigious outdoor
award. Presented by Europe‘s leading
outdoor magazines, there is just
one winner each year. Besides the
mat‘s sheer warmth, this award was
presented to Exped in recognition of
the DownMat‘s superb performance
and overall value.
a > Two wide mouth valves ensure fast inflation and
simple deflation. Just one quarter turn closes the
valve.
b > Similar to a sleeping bag, baffles between the
mats‘ chambers eliminate cold spots and promote
a stable and supportive air cushion.
c > Light foam blocks at the mat‘s ends prevent down
from escaping or migrating between chambers.
d > Laminated polyester fabric is both durable and
airtight. Top surface of honeycomb textured fabric
provides superior slip resistance and comfort
next to the skin. Seams and valves are all highfrequency
welded (most secure method of fusing
fabrics and materials) to ensure mat integrity. Dark
colors dry quickly.
> For use with a pillow, 2 loops at head end can be
used to secure the packsack to the mat.
> Light and warm: According to EMPA‘s test
(SOP00749) the 9 cm DownMats offer a heat
resistance value of 1.6. At about the same weight,
a standard 2.5 cm self inflating mat offers a value
of 0.5, or, just 1/3 that of the DownMat! Further
EMPA tests demonstrated that regular mats lose
3x more heat to cold ground than to the air. The
conclusion: use a lighter weight sleeping bag with
a DownMat to achieve consistent overall comfort,
and still reduce weight and bulk!
treated with Nocar to eliminate the effects of
humidity that may reach the mat‘s interior.
> They are not as warm as the DownMats, but the SynMats offer the same comfort, weight and
warmth to weight ratio of the SynMat is superior when compared to regular mats. The synthetic
filling is laminated to both the top and bottom of the fabric, which eliminates the loss of loft
common to synthetic filled sleeping bags. As with the DownMats, testing was done with the Syn-
self inflating, comfortable and warm
> The ComfortFoam Mat is comfortable in all respects: As comfortable as the DownMat and
SynMat for sleeping and as easy to inflate as the SIM mats. The weight is also an advantage
because they are lighter than regular self inflating mats of the same thickness. And should
the mat be punctured, the foam continues to insulate and cushion.
> Recycled foam insulation:
The filling in the
ComfortFoam Mats comes
from the foam cores
taken from the Exped
SIM Light Mats. This
is good for the environment,
reduces the price
and ensures that the
Comfort Foam Mats are
self inflating. Only CFK*free,
high grade open
cell polyurethane foam is
used. By filling the mats
loosely with foam cores
instead of lamination,
we eliminate the risk
of delamination, which
is the most common defect
in regular self inflating
SIM LIGHT
> Exped mats inflate quickly with wide air
channels and valves.
> Textured polyester fabric is abrasion- and
UV-resistant, and easy on bare skin. For
improved slip resistance, top surface is
honeycomb patterned, although it‘s not so
‘grippy‘ that would prevent easy turning
with the bag.
> 2 loops at the end permit securing the
packsack (stuffed with clothes) for use as
a pillow. Generously sized stuff sacks offer
easy packing.
> Only CFK-free, high grade open cell
polyurethane foam is used.
> High frequency welded seams and strong
lamination of foam and fabric for durability.
>
lightweight beds for wherever you go
Exped Self Inflating Mats demonstrate thoroughly thoughtful design and quality, as
recognized in outdoor magazine tests. For example, SIM Light 3.8 and 5 were both
highlighted in Outdoor Magazin (Germany, July 2003 and November 2004).
b
>
< e
< c
< g
Delamination is generally the most common
defect in self inflating mats and the reason
why the lamination process gets special
attention.
> Wide mouth valves close with just 1/4 turn.
High quality molded valves reduce weight
and never feel cold to touch.
> Included: fabric patches and textile glue.
a > SIM Light 2.5 Short: A reduced size mat for
the minimalist or those in need of a smaller size
mat. Combine two mats for extra length or extra
cushioning and insulation. Vertical cores in the
foam reduce weight. Folds very compactly in
thirds.
b > SIM Light 2.5 BP: The lightweight standard self
inflating mat with contoured shape to save weight.
Same coring design of SIM Light 2.5 short. Packs
easily in thirds.
c > SIM Light 2.5: The lightweight standard of self
inflating mats in a full length. Same coring design
of SIM Light 2.5 Short. Packs easily in thirds!
Normally wasted, ‘cores‘ are recycled into Exped‘s
unique ComfortFoam mats.
d > SIM Light 3.8: Outdoor Magazin (Germany) July
2003 test winner! A 4-season mat with horizontal
cores offers lighter weight and less bulk than solid
foam.
e > SIM Light 5: Outdoor Magazin (Germany)
November 2004 test winner! “The best all round
mat the Outdoor editors know..“ Very cushy, 4season
mat. Horizontal cores reduce weight and
bulk.
f > SIM Light 5 DLX: Same great design of SIM Light
5 with horizontal cores throughout the foam, but
with added dimensions. Still, easily lightweight
enough to carry!
g > SIM Light 10 DLX: The “Fat“ mat for an expedition
base camp, RV, or portable guest bed. A truly
luxurious mat with velcro strips to enable joining
of 2+ mats. Horizontal cores reduce weight and
bulk.

AIRMAT 7.5 PUMP DLX
a
a > Wide mouth valves close with
just 1/4 turn. Valves are located
on the ends, rather than corners,
to prevent damage. High quality
molded valves reduce weight and
never feel cold.
b > AirMat 7.5 - continuous air flow in
one chamber, while the wider DLX
is features two equal chambers.
Thoughtful design to ensure that
one small puncture doesn‘t ruin the
entire trip.
c > Quality construction with high
frequency welding.
a > Use either your feet or hands to
pump up the mat in seconds. Flip
it over and use the built in pump as
your perfect pillow!
b > Two wide mouth valves for instant
deflation that close with just 1/4
turn.
c > The AirMat 7.5 Pump DLX is divided
in two separate chambers. Should
one of them get punctured and loose
pressure you still have the other
for a good nights sleep.
d > Textured polyester fabric is abrasion-
and UV-resistant, and easy on bare
skin. For improved slip resistance,
top surface is honeycomb patterned,
although it‘s not so ‘grippy‘ that it
would prevent easy turning with the
an all but invisible package!
> Repair fabrics and a tube of textile
glue are included.
AirMat with a high fun factor: Inflate the mat with a quick jog on the built in pump! And
the same pump then doubles as the built in pillow. Double air chambers for added safety.
Indestructible carpet mat
CHAIR KIT M+L
a > The Doublemat Evazote is made
of Evazote, a closed cell EVA foam
optimised for expedition use. Acclaimed
for extreme durability and
is not rendered useless by thorns,
debris nor your crampons.
Multi purpose: spread it or fold it.
Use it anyway required. Works as
insulating tent carpet, sleeping mat,
rain cover or floatation aid or cut it
up to make insoles for your shoes.
No expedition leaves home without
one.
PICNIC MAT EVA+DOUBLEMAT EVAZOTE
b > The Picnic Mat EVA is made of 2 mm instead of
4 mm EVA (Ethyl-Vinyl-Azetat) foam and one side
is backed by fast drying ripstop nylon that is easy
to bare skin. This makes Picnic Mat waterproof,
warm and tough while providing insulation against
surface moisture, cold and stones. Also works as
carpet in your tent‘s vestibule, canopy or beneath
your tarp. Folded lenghtwise it forms a lightweight,
closed cell pad for summer nights. Insulation and
comfort can be increased by stuffing with clothing,
foliage or your pack.
> EVA (Ethyl Vinyl Acetat) has been used for years
and is considered to be one of the toughes closed
cell foams for outdoor use.
kinds of stiffeners like tent or
trekking pole segments.
> Premium materials: Floor is made of Exped‘s PU
> When cramped spaces make it difficult
to inflate a mat, Pumptube comes
the mat and packsack (or Foot pump).
> Wow! Inflate an AirMat or DownMat
your mat and an Exped Shrink Bag, our
packliners with valve. With the Pumptube
attached, allow the Shrink Bag
to fill with air and roll it closed. Then,
> The Coupler Kit is a pair of straps
that binds two mats together preventing
them from sliping apart. They fit all Exped
mats and are easy to adjust using
> Versatile mini-mat: a seat cushion for
frequency, welded seams. Textured polyester fabric is
very abrasion and UV resistant, and slip proof.
