HUBERT PIRKER has replaced URSULA STENZEL as a Member of the European
Parliament as of 1 February 2006. Mr Pirker, an Austrian politician, has joined the
Group of the European People’s Party and European Democrats. Prior to that, he
was deputy head of the OVP delegation to the European Parliament, coordinator
for home affairs and justice, and EPP spokesman on security. Mr Pirker has become
a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Temporary Committee on the
alleged use of European countries by the CIA for the transport and illegal detention
of prisoners, among others.
Currie appointed General Manager Edelman–Brussels
Edelman announced the appointment of LAURA CURRIE as General Manager of
Edelman’s Brussels office as of 1 February 2006. Ms Currie has 14 years experience
in communications with a strong international background from her work in Canada,
Central & Eastern Europe and Brussels. She joined Edelman’s Toronto office
in 1998 as a Senior Consultant in its Corporate and Public Affairs practice before
transferring to the Brussels office in October 2000 to complement its public policy
and lobbying work with a corporate communications profile.
Knowles is new EUROCITIES Policy Director
Following the departure last December of ANTHONY VAN DE VEN, Ms VANDA
KNOWLES has been appointed as the new EUROCITIES Policy Director as of 1 February
2006. Ms Knowles has been working for EUROCITIES for more than a year
as Policy Officer on Governance and International Relations. She previously worked
for the Civil Society Contact Group, where she organised seminars in new member
states on civil dialogue and cross-sectoral analysis of the Constitutional Treaty. She
also worked as an analyst at the Institute for German studies in Birmingham and
acted as an assistant to Gisela Stuart MP.
New Director of European Journalism Centre
WILFRIED RUTTEN succeeds RAYMONDE GRISWOLD as Director of the European
Journalism Centre in Maastricht (NL). He takes up the position as of 1 March 2006.
Mr Rutten is currently head of the School for Digital Television at the Salzburg
University of Applied Sciences in Austria. A German national, Mr Rütten has an
extensive track record as a working journalist in broadcasting, both in public (ARD)
and private (RTL Group) environments. He has also worked in journalism education
in a variety of contexts, with a special focus on how new technologies will affect
the ways journalist will work in the future.
New Director of the Office of the Mazovia Region
ANDRZEJ ZUK has been appointed the new Director of the Representation Office
of the Mazovia Region. As of 1 January 2006, Mr Zuk took over from Mr WITOLD
PRANDOTA. Prior to that, Mr Zuk worked in the Marshal`s Office of the Mazovia
Voivodeship in Warsaw focusing on the European Union affairs.

Renouf Becomes Partner of BLP

MICHAEL RENOUF has joined Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) as a partner. Mr Reneuf,
managing partner of Crosby Reneuf, will focus on EU regulatory issues, internal
market and environmental law. He studied law and French (Manchester, 1983)
and holds a Masters degree in international and comparative law (Brussels, 1984).
Mr Reneuf has practiced European law in Brussels since 1990. His areas of interest
include: public procurement, state aid, regulatory issues, problem solving and merger
regulation.
New Parliament Relations Manager at ECPA
The European Crop Protection Association (ECPA) has welcomed a new colleague,
STEPHAN SCHRAFF, as Parliament Relations Manager. He assumed the post as of
2 January 2006. Mr Schraff is a lawyer and has spent the last 6 years working in
Brussels as a Regulatory Affairs Consultant with a focus on advocacy work in the
European Parliament.
Bolza Elected Vice President of CENELEC
On January 1, ALDO BOLZA of Italy took over from Mr Ricossa for a 2 year term as
Vice President of CENELEC, the European Committee for Electro-technical Standardisation.
Mr Bolza has broad experience in the electro-technical field. He is currently
chairman of the technical committee of CIGRE (Conseil International des Grands Réseaux
Electriques) and was elected President of CEI (Comitato Eletrottecnico Italiano)
in 2004. Mr Bolza has broad knowledge in the standardisation field and longstanding
experience at Pirelli both in the R&D and its worldwide activities.
New Director of EUCAR
ULF PALMQUIST has been appointed the new Director of the European Council for
Automotive R&D (EUCAR). Dr Palmquist commenced his new duties on 1 January
2006 replacing Dr. ARNOLD VAN ZYL. EUCAR was established on 27 May 1994,
evolving from the previous Joint Research Committee (JRC) of the European motor
vehicle manufacturers.
Marchetta appointed President of CECE
HENRI MARCHETTA has been appointed the new President of the Committee for
the European construction Equipment Industry (CECE). He took up the position on
1 January 2006. Mr Matchetta is simultanously Chairman and Managing Director
of Mecalac Ahlmann.

Jihadi terrorism: Where do we
stand?
This is the second IRRI conference and discussion on international
terrorism. The conference will be opened with
a keynote speech by Mr Gijs De Vries, counter-terrorism
co-ordinator for the Council of the European Union. The
discussions will be followed by a reception.
Services Directive demonstration
The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) is calling
for a major demonstration on the Services Directive 2006
in Strasbourg. The European Parliament, meeting in plenary
session, will be debating and voting on the draft directive
at that time. The European Trade Union movement
believes it is important to make its voice heard on a series
of crucial issues.
