HUBERT PIRKER has replaced URSULA STENZEL as a Member of the <strong>European</strong><br />

Parliament as of 1 February 2006. Mr Pirker, an Austrian politician, has joined the<br />

Group of the <strong>European</strong> People’s Party and <strong>European</strong> Democrats. Prior to that, he<br />

was deputy head of the OVP delegation to the <strong>European</strong> Parliament, coordinator<br />

for home affairs and justice, and EPP spokesman on security. Mr Pirker has become<br />

a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Temporary Committee on the<br />

alleged use of <strong>European</strong> countries by the CIA for the transport and illegal detention<br />

of prisoners, among others.<br />

Currie appointed General Manager Edelman–Brussels<br />

Edelman announced the appointment of LAURA CURRIE as General Manager of<br />

Edelman’s Brussels office as of 1 February 2006. Ms Currie has 14 years experience<br />

in communications with a strong international background from her work in Canada,<br />

Central & Eastern Europe and Brussels. She joined Edelman’s Toronto office<br />

in 1998 as a Senior Consultant in its Corporate and Public Affairs practice before<br />

transferring to the Brussels office in October 2000 to complement its public policy<br />

and lobbying work with a corporate communications profile.<br />

Knowles is new EUROCITIES Policy Director<br />

Following the departure last December of ANTHONY VAN DE VEN, Ms VANDA<br />

KNOWLES has been appointed as the new EUROCITIES Policy Director as of 1 February<br />

2006. Ms Knowles has been working for EUROCITIES for more than a year<br />

as Policy Officer on Governance and International Relations. She previously worked<br />

for the Civil Society Contact Group, where she organised seminars in new member<br />

states on civil dialogue and cross-sectoral analysis of the Constitutional Treaty. She<br />

also worked as an analyst at the Institute for German studies in Birmingham and<br />

acted as an assistant to Gisela Stuart MP.<br />

New Director of <strong>European</strong> Journalism Centre<br />

WILFRIED RUTTEN succeeds RAYMONDE GRISWOLD as Director of the <strong>European</strong><br />

Journalism Centre in Maastricht (NL). He takes up the position as of 1 March 2006.<br />

Mr Rutten is currently head of the School for Digital Television at the Salzburg<br />

University of Applied Sciences in Austria. A German national, Mr Rütten has an<br />

extensive track record as a working journalist in broadcasting, both in public (ARD)<br />

and private (RTL Group) environments. He has also worked in journalism education<br />

in a variety of contexts, with a special focus on how new technologies will affect<br />

the ways journalist will work in the future.<br />

New Director of the Office of the Mazovia Region<br />

ANDRZEJ ZUK has been appointed the new Director of the Representation Office<br />

of the Mazovia Region. As of 1 January 2006, Mr Zuk took over from Mr WITOLD<br />

PRANDOTA. Prior to that, Mr Zuk worked in the Marshal`s Office of the Mazovia<br />

Voivodeship in Warsaw focusing on the <strong>European</strong> Union affairs.

Renouf Becomes Partner of BLP<br />

MICHAEL RENOUF has joined Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) as a partner. Mr Reneuf,<br />

managing partner of Crosby Reneuf, will focus on EU regulatory issues, internal<br />

market and environmental law. He studied law and French (Manchester, 1983)<br />

and holds a Masters degree in international and comparative law (Brussels, 1984).<br />

Mr Reneuf has practiced <strong>European</strong> law in Brussels since 1990. His areas of interest<br />

include: public procurement, state aid, regulatory issues, problem solving and merger<br />

regulation.<br />

New Parliament Relations Manager at ECPA<br />

The <strong>European</strong> Crop Protection Association (ECPA) has welcomed a new colleague,<br />

STEPHAN SCHRAFF, as Parliament Relations Manager. He assumed the post as of<br />

2 January 2006. Mr Schraff is a lawyer and has spent the last 6 years working in<br />

Brussels as a Regulatory Affairs Consultant with a focus on advocacy work in the<br />

<strong>European</strong> Parliament.<br />

Bolza Elected Vice President of CENELEC<br />

On January 1, ALDO BOLZA of Italy took over from Mr Ricossa for a 2 year term as<br />

Vice President of CENELEC, the <strong>European</strong> Committee for Electro-technical Standardisation.<br />

Mr Bolza has broad experience in the electro-technical field. He is currently<br />

chairman of the technical committee of CIGRE (Conseil International des Grands Réseaux<br />

Electriques) and was elected President of CEI (Comitato Eletrottecnico Italiano)<br />

in 2004. Mr Bolza has broad knowledge in the standardisation field and longstanding<br />

experience at Pirelli both in the R&D and its worldwide activities.<br />

New Director of EUCAR<br />

ULF PALMQUIST has been appointed the new Director of the <strong>European</strong> Council for<br />

Automotive R&D (EUCAR). Dr Palmquist commenced his new duties on 1 January<br />

2006 replacing Dr. ARNOLD VAN ZYL. EUCAR was established on 27 May 1994,<br />

evolving from the previous Joint Research Committee (JRC) of the <strong>European</strong> motor<br />

vehicle manufacturers.<br />

Marchetta appointed President of CECE<br />

HENRI MARCHETTA has been appointed the new President of the Committee for<br />

the <strong>European</strong> construction Equipment Industry (CECE). He took up the position on<br />

1 January 2006. Mr Matchetta is simultanously Chairman and Managing Director<br />

of Mecalac Ahlmann.

Jihadi terrorism: Where do we<br />

stand?<br />

This is the second IRRI conference and discussion on international<br />

terrorism. The conference will be opened with<br />

a keynote speech by Mr Gijs De Vries, counter-terrorism<br />

co-ordinator for the Council of the <strong>European</strong> Union. The<br />

discussions will be followed by a reception.<br />

Services Directive demonstration<br />

The <strong>European</strong> Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) is calling<br />

for a major demonstration on the Services Directive 2006<br />

in Strasbourg. The <strong>European</strong> Parliament, meeting in plenary<br />

session, will be debating and voting on the draft directive<br />

at that time. The <strong>European</strong> Trade Union movement<br />

believes it is important to make its voice heard on a series<br />

of crucial issues.<br />
