RESPONSIBLE GAMING CERTIFICATION Since joining Camelot in April, I have witnessed something that I believe to be unique to the lottery world and a really positive force for change. I have been welcomed into the lottery community and have seen how open collaboration can drive best practices and a continual evolution of our industry. Input from every EL Member really does make the whole stronger. Testament to this approach is how the European Responsible Gaming Standards were conceived, developed and adopted to protect the interests of players and vulnerable groups. The European Responsible Gaming Standards are a set of standards which provide a common framework by which Lotteries can make responsible gaming an integral part of their daily operations. The standards cover requirements in ten key subject areas that make up a responsible gaming programme spanning research and game design to treatment referral and player education. These standards were adopted by all EL Members in 2007, and in 2008 a framework to enable Members to become certified was developed. SEE INNOVATION IN A DIFFERENT LIGHT. TOGETHER. JOIN TODAY. WWW.LOTTERYINNOVATION.NET RESPONSIBLE GAMING The Lotteries that have become certified have really seen clear business benefits of undertaking the assessment. Although responsible gaming has always been something that Camelot has put right at the heart of its business, the assessment process meant that we carried out a root and branch examination of working practice in all areas of our responsible gaming programme – this enabled us to identify any gaps that needed addressing and to provide an incentive for the rest of the business to drive continuous improvement across the company. Having a ‘gold standard’ in responsible business practice has also helped to boost our reputation further amongst our many stakeholders, which we believe makes us a more effective operator who is trusted to deliver on its commercial targets, while keeping players’ wellbeing at the forefront of everything we do. Achieving certification also means Members gain Level 4 accreditation – the highest level in the World Lottery Association Responsible Gaming Framework. In these economically tough times our players’ wellbeing approach has born unexpected fruit. Our excessive play policy, that drives us to have millions of people spending small amounts, has meant that we have seen less impact on our overall business. It may have been a different story if we had relied on big spenders curtailing that large spend when times were tough.
