Munich airport
Munich airport is located around 30 km
(linear distance) from the city centre, to the
north of Munich. With a passenger volume
of 30.8 million (2006), it ranks among the
top ten airports in Europe. In Germany, it is
the undisputed number two. Last year,
travellers could choose from over 250
destinations in 71 countries. An average of
85,000 air passengers per day passed
through the airport’s terminal.
Munich central station
Serving as an important hub for rail traffic
in Germany and as a linking point between
southern and eastern Europe, Munich
central station is one of the largest railway
stations in Europe. It covers an area
measuring 1.9 kilometres in length and 400
metres in breadth and has over 32 tracks.
Munich central station accommodates
around 350,000 passengers and visitors
each day.
City railway and
underground network
Every 10 to 20 minutes, the surrounding
suburbs are connected with the city by
eight city railway lines. Munich also has a
dense underground network. One line leads
directly from the city to the Olympic Park.
In addition, the Olympic Park is served by
buses and trams.
· Travel and Transportation
Parking
There are 4,000 parking spaces close to the
Olympic Park. Limited parking will be
available for media representatives. Parking
will be allocated on a first come-firstserved
basis. Your pass will either be posted
to you (if the application is received early
enough) or will be available for collection
of the press centre. The car park is located
behind the Olympic Stadium (Parkharfe).
Shuttle service
Media representatives staying at the official
press hotel will benefit from a free press
shuttle service connecting them from the
hotel to the Olympic Stadium press centre.
The arrival and departure times of the
Olympic Park and Olympic Stadium Munich
With its unique concentration and
combination of different sports and
event facilities, Munich’s Olympic Park
has developed into one of the most
important event and leisure centres in
the world.
Over three decades have passed since
the Games of 1972 and the Olympic Park
Munich still remains a unique place,
brimming with energy. While most
venues for the Olympic Games have
since passed into history, in Munich a
leisure and events centre has been
established that enjoys worldwide
renown to this day. The figure of around
166 million registered visitors since the
mega event of 1972 tells its own, very
clear story ...
The Olympic Park Munich makes an
impression with its outstanding architecture
and is still very much in tune
with the times. That’s because – unlike
many other Olympic venues – it is filled
with activity on a daily basis. Year after
year, five million people come to the
Park to redeem a ticket enabling them to
take part in sport, take advantage of the
tourism facilities or attend one of the
many top-class events. And that’s not
counting the many thousands of walkers
or joggers who visit it.
Since 1972, the Olympic Stadium has
again and again served as a focus for
national and international sport. Worldclass
events across its eight lanes and in
the facilities for long and triple jump,
high jump, discus, hammer, javelin and
shot put. Olympic flair and conditions
that are always ideal have driven the
best athletes in the world onto worldbeating
performances. But success is not
just measured in records and medals,
with topclass events always making an
integral contribution to the unique
atmosphere of Europe’s largest sports
and leisure park.
The high regard the people of Munich
hold for athletics, the classic Olympic
sport, became clear at international
meetings in the 1970s, those held during
the 80s and the two national championships
of 1982 and 1992. In the more
recent past, the SPAR European Cup
1997, the IAAF Grand Prix Final 1999 and
Team Challenge 2004 gave fans plenty
to get excited about: tens of thousands
of spectators experienced thrilling competition,
the stirring atmosphere providing
a highlight in the Munich sporting
calendar. However, even that was exceeded
by the European Championships
which, with around 304,000 spectators
over the course of six days, set a
completely new benchmark.
