Anticipating market needs is a complex yet essential component of the labelling and
packaging industry. Complex, because predicting consumer demands for next year and
beyond can involve a lot of unknown quantities. But it is essential that we make every
effort to be ready to meet the changing needs of the modern consumer, who expects to
be impressed with each and every product we provide. Because it is no longer enough
that packaging and decoration technologies perform their primary function – to provide
information. New labels will have to offer increased functionality to satisfy growing
consumer demand for innovation and convenience.
In this issue of IdeaMagazine we look at how market demands are changing, how technology
is changing to meet those demands, and how a partnership in innovation can
help you to embrace these changes. Intelligent Label Technology is moving out of the
R&D lab and into the warehouse, with RFID technology and nanocoating technology
scheduled to break into the market within the coming years.
With all this change around us, how do we prepare for the opportunities these technologies
represent? The answer is to share our collective knowledge and experience
more effectively.
Fasson products are built on the concept of Ideas that Work for You, the discovery,
development and distribution of exciting new opportunities in labelling and packaging
that grow your business. We are committed to working with you, sharing knowledge
and experience so that you can be the innovators for your own customers. Our dedicated
Research Centres help us gather new information on technological developments that
may have industry potential. And as your partner in innovation, we will continue to
pass this information on to you so you can turn opportunities like smart labels into
profitable business reality.
IdeaMagazine is produced to provide you with useful ideas and information to help you
and your business. We welcome any feedback that you think might help us achieve this
goal.
As Noel Mitchell, Director of Business Development,
explains, many businesses are already responding to these
challenges, with innovation appearing at every step in the
supply chain. “Press manufacturers have responded with
faster presses, enabling much faster changeover times and
easier to use equipment. Applicator manufacturers are
responding with applicators which can operate at speeds
easily compatible with wet-glue beverage filling lines. While
laminate manufacturers are providing dramatically increased
service packages, as well as driving the development of new
innovations to serve the market.”
CONSUMER CHOICE IS NO LONGER
DETERMINED SIMPLY BY PRICE: SHOPPERS
ARE INCREASINGLY LOOKING FOR PRODUCTS
THAT OFFER THEM MORE – CONVENIENCE,
VALUE FOR MONEY AND FUNCTIONALITY. AND
WITH THE CONSISTENT HIGH QUALITY OF
TODAY’S PRODUCTS, MANUFACTURING AND
LABELLING OPERATIONS ARE UNDER
INCREASED PRESSURE TO DEVELOP NEW AND
MORE DISTINCTIVE PRODUCTS. WHICH IS
WHY INDUSTRIAL COMPANIES ARE STRIVING
TO CREATE THE MOST ECONOMICAL
PRODUCTS POSSIBLE, WHILE ADDING TRUE
DIFFERENTIATED CONSUMER BENEFITS OR
FUNCTIONS AND REMOVING COSTS FROM THE
TOTAL SUPPLY CHAIN.
The evolution of Avery Dennison Intelligent tm
Label Technology
As a key decoration technology, the modern label could
hardly be further away from its origins as a black and white
product identifier. There have been many milestones along
the way, including barcodes and LaserCopy Jet and reclosure
labelling. Functional labelling technologies currently available
also include the whole spectrum of security inks and
printing technologies, micro-taggents, security threads and
other devices designed to protect retailers and consumers
alike. And while there might be debate over which are the
most important developments of the past, there is general
agreement on the importance of the milestone that marks
the future: the smart label. Noel Mitchell highlights some of
the developments in Intelligent Label Technology.

the growing demand for smart labelling
“An excellent example is the Food Freshness Indicator ( FFI )
which can indicate if bacteria are present in certain foods,
which has real implications for ensuring compliance to fresh
food standards, equipping the consumer with a real tool to
guarantee the freshness of their purchases. For true
innovation though, you need only look at the latest
development to move from R&D to reality. A label that actually
extends product freshness, as described by Noel. “It is
already available in the clamshell packaging of raspberries.
The label is on the inside of the pack, and emits tiny
amounts of an antibacterial agent, such as chlorine dioxide,
into the atmosphere of the pack. It significantly reduces the
growth of mould, extending the shelf-life of raspberries in
the retail store from 5 up to 10 days.”
Other current developments include nanotechnology. This
new technology is set to have significant impact on the
industry. Noel describes one example. “Current research is
focusing on a technology that dramatically increases the
oxygen barrier in an incredibly thin construction. It performs
as well as aluminium film, but since it is transparent, it will
enable entirely new possibilities in packaging design –
allowing consumers to see the product inside the packaging
for the first time. Today however it is RFID that is emerging
as one of the key growth drivers of the smart labelling
market, and Avery Dennison has created a new RFID Division
to support you in bringing this technology to your
customers. You can read more on this news on page 12, and
on page 6 you can find out how the Metro Group is already
using the technology to improve its logistics processes.
Looking to the future of labelling
Sjaak Elmendorp is Vice President of Product Technology
and Innovation, and his vision of the future for the industry
is a bright and creative one. “The need for functional labels
has been around for many years. It has only been relatively
recently that the technology has caught up with the need,
becoming viable to cost-effectively produce in large volumes.
Now that the technology is available, we are working closely
with the commercial sector to identify applications to benefit
end-user markets. Expect to see dramatic and positive
changes to our industry in the coming years.”
METRO Group Future Store Initiative
adopts RFID technology
Customer satisfaction has always been at the forefront of
every supplier’s daily work. But today’s customer demands
more quality and value for money in every area of their life
(see ‘The Art of Smart’, page 4.) This puts enormous pressure
on today’s suppliers, squeezing every link in the supply
chain to produce as much value and competitive advantage
as possible. Once again, technological innovations are
about to play a key role in streamlining the supply chain.
After successful trials, Germany’s METRO Group has
adopted RFID, a technology that puts them at the forefront
of competitive trading.
Sophisticated logistics, impressive results
The METRO Group is one of the world’s largest trading
groups, formed in 1996 and operating across 28 countries.
With a strong focus on high quality merchandise, it relies on
sophisticated logistics solutions to ensure reliable delivery
across its network. Central to its forward-thinking approach
is the Future Store Initiative, a proving ground for leadingedge
logistics innovations. The Initiative combines the
industry expertise of a number of major global suppliers,
from Microsoft, IBM and Intel to DHL, Gillette and Coca-Cola.
After contact with suppliers of RFID labels, the company
partnered with Avery Dennison, which outperformed competitors
in a recent RFID study by industry benchmarkers
Odin Technologies. Based in Rheinberg, near Duisburg,
Germany, the Future Store Initiative has been trialling RFID
tracking since April 2003, with impressive results.
Dr. Gerd Wolfram, head of the Future Store Initiative takes
up the story: “From November 2004 we have integrated
RFID technology throughout our process chain, in the most
wide-reaching project in our history. In the first stage,
around 100 of our suppliers will begin to tag all pallets and
transport packages for goods bound for 10 of our central
warehouses. From here the goods will be distributed to
almost 200 RFID-equipped retailers throughout Germany.
It marks the beginning of a new era in accurate, reliable
supply – the hallmarks of the METRO Group.”
Improved distribution network helps
you to market faster
In a move likely to cause dismay to the converter community,
some suppliers are announcing cutbacks and closures in
their distribution network, driven by the need to reduce
costs and improve profitability. For Fasson customers however,
there is good news, with a number of recent initiatives
designed to help you bring your goods to market faster.
Late last year the company opened a new distribution centre
in Paris, as part of what Jeroen Diderich, Supply Chain Director
for Fasson products, calls ‘the drive towards localisation.’
There are now 16 Fasson DCs in total across Europe, supplied
by 6 materials plants. According to Jeroen “this means
better service for more customers, reducing lead times
across the network, so converters can offer shorter lead
times to their own customers.” Another advantage of having
a local DC is reduced warehousing, as Jeroen explains. “Take
customers in France as an example. Now they are close to a
DC, there’s no need to place huge single orders and store
the stock on-site. They can order materials as and when they
need it, reducing their warehousing costs and freeing up
space.” There’s more good news for customers throughout
Europe, with the introduction of new 2m slitters to the Prague
and Vienna DCs, and as Jeroen says, there are ambitious
plans for 2005. “We are hoping to extend our DC network in
Europe this year – and as soon as more news becomes
available we will continue to inform customers directly.”
More programmes on Fasson Exact tm give you more
ways to reduce costs
In 2004 more than 100 programmes were introduced to the
Fasson Exact portfolio, with plans to add as many as possible
each month in 2005 to meet demand. Jeroen Diderich
explains why: “Fasson Exact is another way of serving
customers better: by ordering a fixed length of any Fasson
Exact product, converters can choose any width they need.
Reduced warehousing, minimised waste, and all delivered
from their local DC.” The company’s improved distribution
network is bringing it closer to the target of 99% delivery
reliability. And with more programmes added regularly,
converters will have an even wider range to benefit from.
Says Jeroen: “The Supply Chain team monitors product
demand carefully, and as soon as certain conditions are met,
we add the product to Fasson Exact. We know from our
annual Customer Satisfaction Survey that it’s a popular
service – customers appreciate it so it makes sense to give
them more of what they enjoy.”
News from the North
24-hour service Danish customers as Fasson Exact extended in Copenhagen
Last year in Denmark a total of 7 new
programmes were added to Fasson Exact,
operating out of the DC in Hedehusene near
Copenhagen. As Bo Krabbe, Area Manager
Nordic Countries, explains, it’s all about
offering added value. “The additional
programmes were introduced because of
increased demand for speedy service on
core products. We are committed to offering
optimum flexibility to our customers, and
will continue to develop the Fasson Exact
service in the region.”
8 idea magazine issue 1 /05
The most recent introductions are Fasson
Thermal Top S8 with Fasson WR3000, water
removable adhesive, and Fasson PE 150
White, with Fasson S692N adhesive.
Another boost for customers is the 24-hour
operation of the slitters in the DC, which has
provided next-day delivery for customers
within a 250km radius since 2003.
Improved lead times from Milton Keynes DC
The Distribution Centre in Milton Keynes has
recently undergone a change of focus, with
the completion of a project designed to
improve service in the region. Richard
Buckles, Sales Representative, explains:
“As part of last year’s Customer Satisfaction
Survey we learned that one of the main
needs from our customers was an expansion
of the Fasson Exact and other service
programmes. In the months between June
and October 2004 we worked closely with
customers in order to find out just what
products they needed to meet the demands
of their end-users. A large number of
This delivery target applies to all products
from the Copenhagen DC, helping
converters in the region to reduce lead
times and inventory costs.
products are now available in multiple
lengths, and we are also now focusing
on the introduction of specific Service
programmes. The main objective of these
programmes is to improve response to
enquiries, and maintain our competitive
lead times for customers in the region.

More winners announced at Irish Print Awards
Just one month after the “First Past the Post”
event in Kildare, the printers and label
converters in Ireland gathered to discover
the winners of the Irish Print Awards. Held in
the 5-star Berkeley Court Hotel in Dublin,
the event, organised by the Irish Printer
Magazine, attracted the country’s leading
industry names. The 19 entries for the prestigious
self-adhesive label award sponsored
by Avery Dennison Ireland, were scrutinised
by an independent panel of judges. Scoring
was based on a range of considerations,
including presentation and label registration,
and the degree of difficulty involved in
producing the labels. Congratulations to the
When Killashee House in Kildare was built in
1861, the owners could never have imagined
that it would one day play host to an evening
happened last October when customers
from all over Ireland gathered to celebrate a
vibrant evening of entertainment and
informative presentations. Sandra Tarr,
Country Manager Ireland, takes up the story.
“There was a great response from
customers – 55 people in all attended the
event, which was themed “First Past the
Post”. We chose this theme because we
wanted to highlight the importance of cooperation
throughout the supply chain.
There were a number of presentations at the
event, summed up perfectly by John Brown,
MD of Label Art: “they differed in style and
content, but all shared the same underlying
theme: we need to be more innovative in
both our outlook and our product, working
not in isolation but in partnership with our
suppliers and customers, in order to
winners of this award, who the panel judged
Of course it wasn’t all ‘serious business’, as
Sandra explains. “There was plenty of time
for fun – we had a race night, which was
extremely popular with the customers, many
of whom got involved in the racing itself.
The Irish dancers from the Odea / Kenny
Reactions I’ve had since the event are
unanimous: everyone’s looking forward to
Engineered Solutions –
unique products created for specific
applications
Engineered Solutions are creative solutions
to new and emerging customer challenges,
so when your customers ask for a label
that’s extra-special – in terms of how it looks
or performs – Customer Product Engineers
are on hand to help. As well as offering
product differentiation, Engineered
Solutions can also be a source of profitable
new business opportunities. Several global
successes originated as Engineered
Solutions, including the now-famous ‘Energy
Strip’ in Duracell batteries, as well as the
development of the self-adhesive stamp,
which is now more popular than the traditional
gummed variety. Because of the commercially
sensitive nature of such projects,
Engineered Solutions are guarded by the
strictest levels of customer confidentiality,
which means that many customer success
stories often go unreported. Thanks to the
co-operation of NSD and Diamant however,
we can report a recent example from
The Netherlands.

No-Stick autocollar delights
cooking-oil customer
The story began last year in The Netherlands,
with Dutch converter NSD. Vincent Scheirman,
Customer Product Engineer, takes up the
story. “The end-user Diamant produces oil
for deep frying, and planned a special
money-back offer on one of its products
– customers send back a voucher from the
bottle and get a 2-euro discount. This meant
we couldn’t use self-adhesive labels, so we
developed a special No-Stick booklet, which
NSD applied as an autocollar.”
William Stauthamer, Calculator at NSD, was
impressed with the results: “When we called
Vincent, we told him the materials requirement,
and very quickly we took delivery of
what we needed. We printed the label first,
then the special offer leaflet, which we
applied to the base label. Finally we die-cut
the construction and dispensed it via autocollar.
Diamant was very very pleased, and I
know if they need a different type of label
next year, we will be able to deliver without
a problem.”
Vincent explains the technical specifications:
“the component is based on a No-
Stick fugitive adhesive and Fasson MC90,
with controlled release from the carrier
allowing automatic dispensing. The booklet
is then dispensed around the neck of the
bottle, with the No-Stick adhesive providing
vehicle enabling non pressure sensitive
products to be converted via reel fed print
and diecutting, on conventional roll label
presses.”
Fasson Mix & Match – combining
products for proven success
The other component of Fasson Specialty is
Fasson Mix and Match, offering any combination
of more than 200 faces, 50 adhesives
and 20 liners – more than 50,000 in total.
Dermot Somers from Multiprint in Ireland
explains why his company uses Fasson Mix
and Match. “The service allows us to offer
our customers true flexibility. For instance
recently we used a filmic liner on a standard
product to offer our customers increased
application speed, helping them improve
Avery Dennison RFID Division –
helping you prepare for the future
The massive interest in RFID throughout
the retail supply chain is set to grow in the
coming years. In order to be ready to support
you with innovative ways to capitalise
on this market, Avery Dennison has created
the new RFID division: Avery Dennison
IntelligentTM Label Technology.
Florian Jungmeier, Director Marketing & Sales
of the RFID division in Europe explains, “The
new division offers a focused set of resources
dedicated to perfecting RFID technology for
inclusion in high speed, high quality, high
volume roll-to-roll manufacture.”
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is an
intelligent labelling solution that uses tags
containing a miniature computer chip to store
and broadcast product information. The tag
incorporates a small antenna, and in passive
RFID tags (without an independent power
supply), it produces a low power signal
(UHF between 868MHz and 915MHz) when
passing through an RFID reader. With RFID
readers placed throughout the supply chain,
products can be traced more efficiently than
previously possible – and in real time.
12 idea magazine issue 1 /05
Pressure-sensitive materials are an ideal
carrier medium for RFID chips. The new division
will supply inlays and/or ready-to-use
RFID labels . Benchmarking tests by industry
RFID expert Odin technologies Laboratory
(www.odintechnologies.com) have shown
Avery Dennison RFID tags outperformed
competitors. The tags are designed for
common RFID applications, including large
labels for retail pallets and cartons, and
narrower labels for tray labelling. As Florian
explains, Avery Dennison tags offer unique
antenna designs meaning the tags are not
sensitive to metal package contents – ensuring
the information can be read accurately and
reliably. What’s more, they can be read from
any angle, so there’s no need to reposition
the tags on pallets or cartons.
You can already offer RFID to your
them, so it would be counterproductive to
offer RFID directly to end-users.” If your
customers are already developing an RFID
strategy, you can work with them without
immediately investing in the necessary RFID
“the RFID division has the capacity to
produce runs of labels for Fasson partners
Durable labels – a lasting source of profit for your business
Durable consumer products – such as
electronics, white goods and automotive
parts – need durable labelling solutions:
identification or warning labels that last
as long as the products themselves.
Ulrike Stiffel, Business Development
Manager, explains how you can benefit
from Fasson Durables – the ‘labels that last’.
“The main advantage of the Durables range
of products, apart from the very short lead
times, is that it’s all available from the same
place – the one-stop-shop that means
there’s no need to source different suppliers
to meet your needs. We also have processes
in place that make it simple to alter the construction
of the material – so if you need a
different backing paper, for instance, that
can quickly be arranged. We have a team of
specialists who can advise on the most
suitable product too, whether it’s PET or a
more cost-effective material, with a full
range of solvent and emulsions available.”
Eastern Europe – a growing market
for Durables
There is a growing need for durable labels,
with huge interest from Eastern Europe,
where manufacturers are shifting to benefit
from the economic situation, motivated
workforce and reliable supply chain logistics.
Car manufacturers alone invested 16 billion
Euros in the region in 2004, with a projected
growth in the electronics industry forecast at
35% year on year. Products in these sectors
all need durable labels, and the Fasson
Durables range gives you the flexibility, fast
lead times and high quality necessary to
turn opportunity into profit. What’s more,
all our durable products are UL-approved,
which brings additional value to your offer.
Two new products expand the range
Direct Thermal papers
If you want to benefit from the VIP market
without the fuss of handling a thermal
transfer ribbon, a unique construction
called Fasson Thermal Premium Top S 10 D
offers an ideal opportunity. The thermal
topcoat combines the best qualities of both
high speed direct thermal print and thermal
transfer print, in a laminate that can run
through conventional thermal printers.
According to Gwenaelle Legarrec, Product
Manager Thermal Papers, the potential
applications are huge. “It offers high resolution,
high heat and UV resistance, with longterm
storage capability, resulting in a much
larger scope of applications for the end user.”
Popular adhesives increase the
potential for profit
The paper is offered with two multi-purpose
adhesives, Fasson S2000N and Fasson S2045.
With the emulsion Fasson S2000N, you can
enjoy vastly improved conversion speeds,
and so increased productivity, while the
high-tack hotmelt Fasson S2045 is excellent
especially in low temperature environments
like supermarket food counters. The new
paper is produced on 2 metre coaters, sited
in France and Luxembourg, which were
recently commissioned to produce Fasson
materials. “These state-of-the-art machines
ensure the very highest levels of product
consistency” says Gwenaelle.
Wider range of applications and
improved hygiene performance
One of the many profitable possibilities for
the new paper is in fresh meat packaging.
In recent blood stain resistance tests, the
paper was immersed for 7 days in blood,
after which the barcode was still perfectly
legible. Says Gwenaelle, “this makes it an
ideal replacement for thermal transfer,
removing the need to manipulate the thermal
ribbon, which can raise hygiene issues when
handling or packaging fresh food”
Because of its excellent performance in high
temperature (up to 110°C for short intervals),
the paper is also ideal for labelling hot
meal trays, as Gwenaelle explains. “Airline
inflight meals, hospitals, works canteens
– applications that typically use thermal
transfer – can now enjoy all the benefits of
a single consumable, no waste, and no label
discoloration.” This also makes it ideal for
warehouses with high ambient temperatures.
“Tests with a shrink-wrapping machine
showed that even at high ambient temperatures,
the pallet barcode was perfectly
readable beneath the wrapper, with no
discoloration.
