3.2 Cultivation area
An overview of the surface of sugar beet cultivation in EU Member States is provided in Figure 1 and
Table 2. The total sugar beet cropping area reached 1.5 million hectares in 2010 (EUROSTAT). In 10
years’ time the acreage almost halved coming from 2.7 million hectares in 2001. In the same period
the total beet yield, however, only decreased from 124 million tonnes to 104.3 million tonnes.
