JOB SUMMARY<br />

The U.S. <strong>Coast</strong> <strong>Guard</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> invites applications for a full-time faculty position in the<br />

Mechanical <strong>Engineering</strong> program.<br />

The U.S. <strong>Coast</strong> <strong>Guard</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> is a highly selective federal military college providing a rigorous<br />

undergraduate program. In addition, the U. S. <strong>Coast</strong> <strong>Guard</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> provides the professional<br />

education <strong>and</strong> training required to prepare young women <strong>and</strong> men for careers as commissioned<br />

officers in the U.S. <strong>Coast</strong> <strong>Guard</strong> - the Nation’s oldest sea going service, well-known for its<br />

humanitarian missions. Offering B.S. degrees in eight academic majors: Mechanical<br />

<strong>Engineering</strong>, Electrical <strong>Engineering</strong>, Civil <strong>Engineering</strong>, Naval Architecture/Marine <strong>Engineering</strong>,<br />

MAJOR DUTIES<br />

The U. S. <strong>Coast</strong> <strong>Guard</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>, located in New London, Connecticut, invites applications for a<br />

tenure-track academic faculty position in the Mechanical <strong>Engineering</strong> program beginning around<br />

August 1, 2010. The position will be filled at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor level<br />

according to the needs of the program. The Professor level will be considered in exceptional<br />

cases. Applicants should be committed to outst<strong>and</strong>ing undergraduate teaching leading to the<br />

degree of Bachelor of <strong>Science</strong> in Mechanical <strong>Engineering</strong>. Successful c<strong>and</strong>idates may also<br />

supervise senior capstone design projects <strong>and</strong> independent research projects in mechanical or<br />

aeronautical engineering typically aligned with United Sates <strong>Coast</strong> <strong>Guard</strong> <strong>and</strong> Department of<br />

Homel<strong>and</strong> Security mission areas.<br />

QUALIFICATIONS<br />

Tenure-track c<strong>and</strong>idates should possess a Ph.D. in Mechanical <strong>Engineering</strong>, or a closely related<br />

field. Undergraduate teaching experience is desired, however, professional experience of


c<strong>and</strong>idates will also be considered. C<strong>and</strong>idates should have excellent written <strong>and</strong> oral<br />

communication skills. C<strong>and</strong>idates will be selected based on their ability to teach fundamental<br />

engineering courses as well as their ability to contribute to upper-level courses <strong>and</strong> project work<br />

related to the design, construction, manufacturing, instrumentation, <strong>and</strong> testing of mechanical,<br />

marine, or aeronautical systems for use by the U.S. <strong>Coast</strong> <strong>Guard</strong> or the Department of<br />

Homel<strong>and</strong> Security. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications. Some citizenship<br />

restrictions may apply.<br />

You will be evaluated based on the criteria described above.<br />

This job is being filled by an alternative hiring process <strong>and</strong> is not in the competitive civil service.<br />

Moving expenses will be paid in accordance with appropriate regulations.<br />
