Environmental Impact Assessment for the proposed construction of a 400 kV Transmission power line
between Mercury Substation and Ferrum Substation traversing the Free State, North West and
Northern Cape Provinces
2.2.2 Servitude Requirements and Clearances
A permanent servitude will be registered against the title deeds of the properties
that the proposed Transmission power line is proposed to traverse.
The permanent servitude width for a 400 kV Transmission power line is 55 m, i.e.
27.5 m on either side of the centre line and 10 m from any anchor. The servitude
is required to ensure the safe construction, maintenance and operation of the
power line, and thereby entitles Eskom Transmission Division certain rights, such
as unrestricted access and right of way (ROW).
Where 400 kV Transmission power lines are constructed in parallel, a minimum
separation distance of 55 m is required in order to ensure the reliable operation of
both lines. The minimum vertical clearance to buildings, poles and structures not
forming part of the power line must be 5.6 m. The conductor ground clearance
between the towers is generally 8.1 m. Any farming activities can be practised
underneath the power line, providing that safe working clearances and building
restrictions are adhered to under all circumstances; this applies to all farming
activities except the farming sugar cane and commercial trees.
The minimum distance of a 400 kV Transmission power line structure from
proclaimed public roads is 95 m from the centre line of the structure to the centre
