“Catch The Excitement” At The
Richland County Fair & Rodeo

Follow the crowds to
the food, friends and family
fun at the Richland County
Fair! This sensational event
kicks off Wednesday, Aug.
1 and continues through
Saturday, Aug. 4, at the
Richland County
Fairgrounds, Sidney.
The excitement in the
grandstands will include
the free-admission Horse
Extravaganza on
Wednesday night and
PRCA’s Powder River
Rodeo Thursday and
Friday nights. Country
groups “BlackHawk” and
“Little Texas” headline the
Saturday night show, also
featuring comedian Herb
Dixon. All events take
place at 7:30 p.m. A special
package deal containing
one each: Thursday night
rodeo ticket, Friday night
rodeo ticket, Saturday night
concert ticket, and fair
button, is available through
Friday, July 27 for $45, with
the price increasing to $61
the week of the fair.
2007
Individual tickets are also
available, presale rodeo
tickets costing $7 for adults
or $3 for children. At-thegate
tickets will be $8 for
adults. Saturday’s concert
ticket options include
presale general seats for
$30 and presale reserved
seats for $35. These prices
will go up to $35 and $40
the week of the concert.

buttons. The charge at the
fair entrance will be $2 per
day, and a fair button good
for all four days can be
purchased for $5 before
the presale deadline of
July 27.

entertainment scheduled
every afternoon, including
returning ventriloquist
Wesley and hypnotist

Midway, and there are
plenty of places for parents
to relax while enjoying the
fair’s delicious food and
drinks, from mini donuts

burgers and pie.

Pay One Price—tickets are
available for the
amusement rides. The cost
is $16 for a day of
unlimited rides, and tickets
can be purchased at the
SPF Exxon or the fair office
by July 27. Make sure to

Country Music Groups Combine For

In 1995, a tour
featuring the music of
“Little Texas”, “Blackhawk”
and Tim McGraw came to a
close. This year, two of
these country music groups
will again be performing
together—at the Richland
County Fair’s night show
Saturday, Aug 4!
After releasing an
album early this year, the
group “Little Texas” is still
keeping up a heavy pace
of tours. With a reputation
of being “the hardest
working band in country
music”, they were signed
on as one of the youngest

County Fair and Rodeo! This year promises to be full of
excitement, and we hope everyone will come out to see what we have
to offer.
Entertainment this year includes local and traveling food booths,
the carnival by Royal West Amusements, agriculture, commercial
and 4-H exhibits, as well as Yahoo! Yodeling Challenge
Champion Taylor Ware, Michael Mezmer, “Hypnosis Extreme,”
and the Wesley & Friends Comedy Ventriloquist Show. Also,
don’t forget to purchase your tickets for the PRCA Rodeos
Thursday, Aug. 2, and Friday, Aug. 3, presented by Powder River
Rodeo. Friday night’s performance is “Tough Enough to Wear
Pink”, so make sure to wear pink to support breast and cervical
cancer awareness. This year’s concert includes “Little Texas” and
“BlackHawk” with special guest comedian Herb Dixon Saturday
night, Aug. 4. This year is packed with excitement and has
something for everyone to enjoy!

several free acts, including
returning ventriloquist
Wesley & Friends and
hypnotist Michael Mezmer.

Taylor Ware.
Taylor began her
performing career at a
county fair in Tennessee at
age four, wowing the
1000+ crowd with her violin
playing. She received
national recognition after
winning the Yahoo!
Yodeling Challenge at age
nine and is a self-taught
yodeler.
In addition to this
talent, she is a welltraversed
singer, one of her
vocal highlights being an
appearance to sing the
National Anthem at the
Liberty Bowl in 2006.
Taylor will be a

Coop Day Expresses
Appreciation To Community

For many people,
Thursday’s Coop Day at
the Richland County Fair
and Rodeo entails a
momentary stop at the
sponsor tent for a
complimentary root beer
float—and an equally hasty
return to other fair
afternoon happenings.
However, this day has
more behind it than simply
a free cool-down for fairgoers.
The event was set in
motion in 2000 by Kelly
Knaff, Lower Yellowstone
Rural Electric Association.
LYREA is one of the seven
original coops, six of which
currently contribute to the
day. New to the list this
year is Richland Farm
Mutual Insurance. Other
members include Richland
Federal Credit Union, Farm
Credit Services, Mid-Rivers
Communications, Nortana
Grain and CHS Inc.
Farmers Elevator.
While these
businesses offer different
services, they all share a
common connection to the
community through their
cooperative structure. The
standard framework of a
co-op includes open
membership for all who
use its services,
democratic member
participation through
elected member
representatives and
corporate economic
decisions, self-governing
organization status,
member/employee
education, and
community—not just coop
member—development
emphasis.
Each of our local coops
is highly involved in
community support through
areas such as health
programs, educational
scholarships, and valuable
neighborhood
organizations. Therefore,
Coop Day may seem like
just another public service
these businesses are
willing to sponsor. There is
a live radio broadcast from
the sponsor tent, and
information pamphlets
concerning coops are
available. In addition to
being informative, this
unique annual assemblage
of seven cooperative
associations was designed
specifically to show
appreciation to
constituents of the
community cooperatives.
Both the sponsorship
contribution to a large
public gathering like the
fair and the provision of a
fun treat for visitors are a
part of showing their
gratitude to the community.

Kristen Mantooth
Newly-crowned Miss
Montana 2007, Kristen
Mantooth will appear at the
Richland County Fair and
Rodeo for Thursday
afternoon’s Coop Day
events. She will be
assisting the coop
sponsors serving root beer
floats.
Kristen’s first
experiences as Miss
Montana have included
leading the 5K race at the
Big Sky State Games in
Billings and presenting her
platform to young people at
a state-wide 4-H event in
Bozeman.
Miss Montana’s
message for those she
hopes to impact through
her role is “REACH!”—an
acronym to encourage
youth to strive to attain their
full potential by
demonstrating integrity in
their relationships,
emotions, actions,
character and habits.
While traveling has
now become a major part
of Mantooth’s daily
schedule, her 21 years
have previously found her
in locations far from her
home in Lewistown. Kristen
recently returned from a
semester living abroad in
Italy where she mentored
military children. As an
English and art major, Miss
Montana is using her skills
to write and illustrate a
children’s book to raise
money for the Children’s
Miracle Network.
Her other upcoming
plans include a
performance at the Medora
Musical later in the
summer.

Mouth-watering smells
drift down the midway,
enticing any fair-goer to
one of many tasty choices
of refreshments at the
Richland County Fair’s
selection of food booths.
Most of the sponsoring
organizations have been
perfecting their service and
recipes over a number of
years, and each one offers
a unique menu of delicious
treats.
For early birds, the 4-H
booth cooks up a hearty
breakfast, with a choice of
pancakes, eggs, caramel
rolls and sausage and
biscuits. It also provides
burgers and homemade
pies during the day, and
new this year will be cold
ice cream treats. Nearest
the carnival, one will find
the St. Matthew’s food
booth, Yadon’s Yummies
and the Mini Donuts. St.
Matthew’s advertises
appetizing pizza-by-theslice,
while Yadon’s
Yummies offers its crispy
popcorn chicken and corn
dogs for a carry-out lunch,
along with fresh squeezed
lemonade to quench your
thirst. Of course, no one
with a sweet tooth can pass
up sharing a dozen tasty
mini donuts with a friend. In
addition, the baseball
booth and Boy Scouts
stand, serving both filling
meals of burgers, hot dogs
or nachos, and lighter fare
such as fluffy cotton candy
and fountain pop, are
situated closest to the
grandstand entrance for
those needing an
intermission snack.
Across from the
Commercial Building
stands a line-up of choices,
from the Richland Youth
Hockey’s homemade ice
cream bars, funnel cakes
and caramel apple slices to
the legendary Vikings
made at the Sons of
Norway booth. Scrumptious
home-cooked meals can
be found at the church
booths, such as the
Methodist booth’s German
or Cajun burgers
accompanied by German
potato salad and
homemade pie. Pella’s
Pantry also features
homemade pie and offers
burgers and barbecue beef
sandwiches with baked

roping, bronc riding, barrel
racing and bull riding will

friends. Screams of terror
from high above the

cries of beckoning
hawkers. It’s the opening
day of the carnival at the
Richland County Fair and
Rodeo on Wednesday,
Aug. 1.
Youngsters of all ages
will enjoy the variety of
over 30 exciting rides,
games and attractions
offered by the Royal West
Amusement Company. This
Missoula-based business
provides fun and safe
carnival experiences to the
Rocky Mountain states of
Arizona, Idaho, Montana,
Nevada and Utah. They will
be returning to Sidney to
host the carnival at this
year’s Richland County
Fair.
From potato-sack slide
rides to spinning apples,

The peaceful sunrise
on a Richland County Fair
morning finds most citizens
contentedly sleeping in
their beds. However, for
Nina Panasuk, this early
morning captures a stir of
activity centered around
the 4-H livestock barns.
Many young people and
their parents bustle about
preparing various show
animals in anticipation of
the coming display of
months of dedicated work.
Panasuk, a Bainville
graduate and member of
the Charley Creek 4-H
Club, considers this aspect

of the fair a highlight of her
4-H experience.
“I love just coming to
the fair—staying in the
camper, hanging around
the barns and checking on
my animals.” While
Panasuk will be showing
her fourth 4-H steer,
Stewart, this year, her
livestock exhibits over the
years have not been
limited to cattle. She was
highly involved in the 4-H
horse program for six
years, and a year in the
high school rodeo program
also developed her interest
in riding. This hobby is one
she continues to pursue,
Nina displays the outcome of her crocheting
hobby developed through her many 4-H projects.

surrounded by all the farm
animals has been a
definite advantage of living
in the country.
Panasuk, whose older
brother was also a 4-H
member, feels her
participation in 4-H
developed worthwhile
skills and interests that she
can use as she moves on
to a new chapter in life.
Next year, Panasuk plans
to attend the medical
school at Montana Tech in
Butte, after making a
decision to take up medical
work over veterinary
practice.

she said of her fair projects
and 4-H involvement. Out
of her varying indoor
projects—including
ceramics, photography,
woodworking, clothing and
bread—Panasuk has
especially enjoyed her time
spent learning to crochet,
completing a multi-colored
blanket after four years of
crafting it.
Times of fun with her
club have also created
special memories for
Panasuk, especially their
annual river float. For her,
the 50-mile drive to club
meetings has been worth it,
and she looks forward to
one more Richland County
Fair as a 4-H member.

4-H Plays Major Role At Richland County Fair

4-H Exhibit Building
Fair time is just around
the corner and it’s shaping
up to be a good year for all
the 4-H members.
Members have been
working hard for the past
year on skill building
projects ranging from
Quilting to Aerospace to
Leather Craft. This year in
the exhibit building you will
see some new projects like
Cake Decorating, Robotics
and Welding. There will
also be a display of the
Multi County Camp held
this summer. “Every Piece
Counts” 4-H Camp was
4-H horse show.
held in early June at Fort
Peck. Between working on
projects for the fair,
participating at the State
Congress at the Montana
State University Campus in
Bozeman, and the different
4-H workshops, 4-Hers
have been very busy this
summer. The fair is all
about showing off what this
area’s youth can do, and
the indoor exhibits are a
big part of what 4-H is
about. Many of these
exhibits will lead into much
more than just a project,
they will spark an interest
that will carry on past the
teen age years. The indoor
exhibits will be on display
in the 4-H Exhibit Building,
from August 1 st to the
conclusion of the fair on
Saturday. We invite
everyone to stop by the 4-H
Exhibit Building and enjoy
the hard work that is put
into these projects.
Livestock Sale to start at
4:30 p.m., Friday Aug. 3
Fair is close and the
animals are ready for a
good showing. The
livestock program has
been very strong with many
new members in their first
show. The barns are going
to be full of high quality
animals ready for the sale.
Members take part in many
educational programs
throughout the year
including a Market Quality
Assurance program that
insures that the animals
are at their best. This year
we will have new exhibits
in the goat projects. Friday
night will include an
awards show at 4:00 p.m.
where members will
receive awards donated by
area businesses. The sale
is going to start at 4:30 p.m.
on August 3 rd at the 4-H
arena located between the
beef and swine barns. A
buyers' appreciation feed
will take place during the
sale for all buyers and 4-H
parents to enjoy. Thank you
to all past buyers, without
your support the 4-H
program would not be such
a success.

Antique Tractor Show Becomes

Fair Horse Events Set
For Wednesday, Aug. 1

Wow! How time flies! It
seems like last week when
the 2006 Richland County
Fair was here. During the
fair on Wednesday night
many people had the rare
opportunity to see some of
the most beautiful and
talented horses and riders
in the Mondak region. I
hope you took advantage
of the free show. If not, well,
you are in luck! You will
again have the chance to
view draft teams, rare
breeds, talented riding
exhibitions and horses of
every color and size.
We always start out
with a flag presentation
and this year will be no
exception! We are blessed
to have so many talented
youth in our area and many
are in 4-H and rodeo.
Sisters, Lacie and Katie
Whitford, have presented in
previous years. Katie was
our first presenter the year
she was rodeo queen for
this area.
One of the newest
forms of riding we have
seen is the jumping course.
If you have not had the
opportunity to see our
talented ladies soar over
these jumps, you need to
come and see what you
are missing! This
demonstration gets lots of
oohs and aahs from the
crowd each year.
We hope to get the
Curlys here this year as
well as some Morgans and
Fox Trotters. Last year,
there were a lot of our
breeds missing for different
reasons but we hope to
have all of them back! We
hope to see the Peruvian
Passo, Arabian,
Andalusian, Halfinger,
Shires and other Draft
Breeds back.

Kukowski, Gene Koch’s
famous Mule Train, KC’s
Miniatures with Gracie
Burns and Holly Bouchard,
draft teams of Everett
Johnson and Ken
Schlothauer, cart driving
with Rita Wick, a Parelli
and bridleless
demonstration from Schatzi
Jore, jumping exhibitions
from Joyce Wick and
Victoria Netzer and riding
patterns from our
outstanding 4-H youth.
Jade Brunsvold did a
fun and entertaining
program, Megan
Greenwood and Lacie
Whitford did their complex
level 7 routines and Joyce
Wick did an awesome
routine with her four-yearold
even though her music
died part way through!
Victoria Netzer rounded out
the night with an excellent
exhibition of ground work
with her yearling project.
As you can see, there
was something for
everyone! So, on
Wednesday night Aug. 1 at
7:30 p.m. at the Richland
County Fair and Rodeo
arena you will again have
the opportunity to see a
wonderful array of horse
perfection. This exhibition
is free to the public. How
perfect is that?

Fair Ag Building
Attracts All Ages

The Agriculture
building is a central feature
of any county fair,
displaying exhibits that
encompass a wide range
of ages and interests. In
addition to housing the
many colorful entries, this
building has often been a
timeless favorite as a
gathering place for many
attending the Richland
County Fair and Rodeo,
Wednesday through
Saturday, Aug. 1-4.
Sidney resident,
Dorothy Larsen, relates
that the fair was always a
highlight for her family. She
reminisces, “We lived for
the fair; we got out of
school for it. The fair was
held in September then, to
better suit the needs of the
ag exhibits. ”Although this
will only be her fourth year
entering exhibits, Larsen
has always been involved
with the Ag building. Her
roles have included being
a judge’s assistant, sitting
in for her sister at the
Fairview community booth,
and entering her prizewinning
baked goods. She
has fond memories of all
the hustle and bustle of
people coming and going,
including encounters with
her husband-to-be,
Carmen, during high
school. “He was in 4-H. He
would bring steers and
sheep to the fair and sleep
in the barns,” said Dorothy
as she displayed a blackand-white
photo of the two
together at the Ag building.
The Roiger family has
also benefited from
meeting many people
through their participation
at the Ag building. Prior to
their involvement with the
art instruction program at
Liberty Christian School,
they observed fairs in other
states. Though initially
hesitant at their neighbor’s
suggestion to enter their art
and photography exhibits
at the Richland County
Fair, they were pleasantly
surprised by the
experience. Wife, Cheryl,
commented, “We were
impressed with the
community participation
compared to other county
fairs. It wasn’t just the 4-H
and FFA groups doing it.”
The opportunity to meet
others with a shared
interest in art and browsing
through the variety of
exhibits has been the
highlight of the Roiger’s 12
years of association with
the Ag building.
Since their early
elementary school days, 5 th
and 8 th graders Jolynne
and Michael Simard have
also found a place in the

Ag building. Their
involvement has included
taking entries from all
categories excluding
cooking and flowers. Their
grandmother, Marlys
Binder, has been the “role
model” who got them
interested in taking their
work to the fair. When
asked about the benefit of
exhibiting their crafts and
artwork, they
acknowledged that they
enjoy being able to display
the hard work that they’ve
put into their projects. Their
mother mentioned,
“Sometimes it takes four or
six times to get the stamps
right.” Stamping cards is
the kids’ favorite fair
undertaking, and they
make use of this hobby
year-round by creating
cards for their friends and
family.
Besides providing
opportunity for rekindling
acquaintances, the Ag
building also boasts
numerous learning
experiences for exhibitors
and spectators alike. Both
the Roigers and Simards
have taken advantage of
their family travels to
capture photographs for
their fair projects. Cheryl
Roiger’s Best of Fair picture
was taken on a southern
plantation, and the Simard
kids’ collection includes
photos of trips to Utah and
some pictures of the
Enchanted Highway east of
Dickinson.
From an art teacher’s
perspective, Michael
Roiger stated that the ag
exhibits help motivate his
art students. “It gives them
another chance to have
judges comment on their
work, and when they do
well, they just keep trying
to improve for the next
year.” Last year, daughter
Robin Roiger was pleased
to receive a Best of Fair on
her pen and ink drawing
after only her second year
of working with this art
medium.
Dorothy Larsen also
feels that judges’
comments are a helpful
learning tool, and they
contain good reminders to
pay attention to Fair Book

instructions, such as “Don’t
peel onions” or “Remove
stems from cherry
tomatoes.” During the
judging, she overhears tips
to use the next year and

firsthand—from samples
given during judging—why
the judges chose a
particular item of produce.
These are just a few
lessons exhibitors take
away from the Ag building,
and spectators too can
appreciate the first-rate
exhibits while enjoying the
company of friends and
neighbors.

Community In Different Role

This fair week, you are
likely to encounter a
familiar face in a different
place than you’ve seen her
before. AnnDee Taylor,
whose past summer
activities have included
directing the Relay for Life,
is now signed on as the
newest member of the
Richland County Fair
Board. She replaced former
board member Evelyn Poff
earlier this year.
Taylor has enjoyed this
position thus far and is
grateful it is compatible
with her job as librarian for
the Fairview Public School.
A fair board position is
three years, but Taylor
hopes to continue her
involvement on this
community board as a
long-time member. She
said of her first few months,
“I am excited for the new
experience and not starting
out so much in charge like I
was for the Relay. This
board has been so
welcoming and helpful.”
Although AnnDee
feels she has a lot to learn,
she has already taken on
some responsibilities for
this year’s fair. She will be
present throughout the
entire fair and is in charge
of the Commercial building.

an interest in introducing
some new happenings at
the fair on Friday night,
including a live band at the
beer garden and a breast
cancer awareness event in
conjunction with the PRCA
Rodeo. For each rodeo
spectator who wears pink,
$.50 will be given to the
Montana Breast and
Cervical Health Program
and matched by the Pearl

It was more than 140
years ago that the Wells
Fargo stagecoach first
rolled across Big Sky
Country. This icon of the
Old West will again be
carrying passengers in
early August during the
Richland County Fair and
Rodeo.
In addition to
transporting mail and
freight, the Wells Fargo
stagecoach was known as
the finest passenger
vehicle of its time. The
Concord Coach of the late
1800s could carry up to 18
passengers, nine inside
and nine outside, including
the driver and shotgun
messenger, plus luggage,
mail and a treasure box.
An exact replica of an
1880 Concord Coach will
provide free rides on a firstcome,
first-served basis at
the Richland County
Fairgrounds from 1–4 p.m.,
Friday, Aug. 3.

Wells Fargo &
Company had been
expanding its stagecoach
operations throughout the
1850s and 1860s,
establishing a large
network of routes including
many across Montana. The
company needed a
durable stagecoach with a
smooth ride along the new
pathways to the West—
most of them primitive
roads and old pack trails.
The coach that tamed
the West was actually built
in Concord, NH, and made
of the finest wood, leather
and metal. A typical coach
weighed 2,200 lbs., sold
for about $1,100 and
traveled at a “fast clip”—
about five miles an hour.
The key to the coach’s
comfort was its
thoroughbraces—“shock
absorbers” of multiple
leather straps on which the
body of the coach rocked,
instead of bouncing on
steel springs. It was this
innovation that led Mark
Rugged
Quality for
the Long Haul
Twain to describe the
coach as a “cradle on
wheels.”
Traveling by
stagecoach, however, was
not for the faint of heart,
leading the Omaha Herald
to publish several “Hints for
Plains Travelers” in 1877.
