NDSU Research Extension Center Horticulturalist Lorna Bradbury.
Local Horticulturist's Workplace
Is The Great Outdoors
By Jaimee Green
For most people, a typical
work week is spent indoors,
in an office, at a computer.
However, Lorna
Bradbury, a horticulturist with
the North Dakota State University
Research Extension
Center, says, in her field of
work, there are no typical
work weeks and her office is
expansive, consisting of blue
skies, soft soil and lots of
plant life.
“It’s always challenging
trying to get things to grow.
You are always dealing with
the issues of humidity, and
water, the soil content and
even the hardiness of the
plant. My job is much like that
of a farmer. You spend time
watering, weeding and caring
for your crops in whatever
stage of growth they are
in,” Bradbury said.
Growing up on a farm in
central Maine is what
sprouted her interest in crops
and flowers and ultimately
led her to pursue a career in
horticulture. She received a
bachelor’s degree in plant
and soil science from the
University of Maine and then
earned a bachelor’s degree
in environmental systems
engineering from the University
of Regina in
Saskachewan.
In the mid 1970s she
took her first job in the Peace
Corps in Liberia, West Africa,
where she met her husband
Gordon, a lifelong resident of
Williston.
After spending some
time working as a college
professor at Williston State
College she went to work
part-time at the Ernie French
Center where her husband
also worked as a research
specialist. “My job mostly entails
working outside in the
gardens and helping with the
harvest. Right now, the tomatoes
are ripening and we are
checking the grapes for
sweetness. The birds have
discovered the grapes and
since they go from crop to
crop I am putting netting
around the vines,” Bradbury
said.
Although she says she
has no favorite type of flowers,
she admits she is partial
to roses. When she isn’t
working at the research fa-
cility she enjoys growing a
garden of her own. “It’s mostly
bulbs and some annuals. I
keep them in pots on the deck
so there is no weeding. There
are also perennials. It’s gotten
smaller and smaller over
the years as I have been
spending more and more
time out at the field station,”
she said.
When she isn’t outside
she enjoys sewing and reading.
“My children give me different
reading assignments
and then I have to tell them
what I think. The latest book
was ‘Paradise Lost’ by John
Milton but I suppose the next
one will be Harry Potter,” she
said.
Together with her husband,
Bradbury has three
grown children. They are Susan,
27, Nathan, 23, and William,
Research Extension Center in the Ernie French Center
Local Families'
Ancestor Honored
In Cowboy Hall of
Fame
By Jaimee Green
The Stevenson family
may have had lots to talk
about during family gettogethers
and holidays.
However, with the recent induction
of their late relative,
Donald Stevenson, into the
North Dakota Cowboy Hall of
Fame, they will have even
more to discuss. The induction
ceremony took place on
Aug. 4, at the Tjaden Terrace
in Medora. He was honored
for his contribution to pre-
1940 ranching.
“This entire experience
has just brought the history
of our family alive for me. I
guess I didn’t realize we had
that much history but it makes
me pretty proud,” said Trish
Stevenson, a great great
granddaughter.
“He was quite a character
for having started out with
nothing,” said Leon
Stevenson, a great grandson.
Born in April 1833, Don
Stevenson was a Scottish
immigrant who first settled in
Canada in 1842 and then
Minnesota in 1856. After
spending some time in Texas
herding cattle and freighting
Donald Stevenson
and sisters.
he returned to Minnesota and
continued a career in farming
and ranching in Douglas
County. While farming, he
was also hauling freight,
supplies and people from St.
Cloud to the Northern Dakota
Territory.
Using oxen, he ran a
regular line of freight teams
between Bismarck and the
Black Hills, bringing out the
first gold nuggets, sparkling
proof that there was gold
deep in the hills.
In 1864, he became the
first postmaster of Osakis and
was appointed by President
Lincoln. When the town organized
in 1866, he served
on the first board of commissioners
and remained a
member for seven years.
Later, he went on to serve in
the legislature from 1896-
1898.
In 1872, he, along with
his wife, Lydia Ann Stone,
and their seven children,
moved to the Dakota Territory
and established the D.S.
Ranch in Emmons County
and continued ranching until
1886. During that time he
ran about 800 head of Longhorn
cattle and horses. It is
Don Stevenson train leaving St. Cloud for Fort
Ransom, ND, 1867
believed that during the winter
of 1886-1887 he lost half
of his herd to the bitter cold.
In 1877, he relocated to
Morton County, approximately
50 miles south of
Mandan. His ranch is believed
to be the first on Cannon
Ball River where he is
said to have had as many as
1,600 head of cattle and
horses.
While ranching full time
he also ran the Stevenson
Post Office at his Cannon Ball
ranch from 1894-1908.
Following declining
health conditions, he retired
in the Dickinson area. He
died on Dec. 28, 1908 in
Dickinson and is buried in
the Mandan Union Cemetery.
While many of
Stevenson’s living relatives
never had a chance to meet
him, many said they feel a
deep sense of pride in his
accomplishments.
In an 1895 article written
by the Record, a Fargobased
publication, he is described
as “big, hearty, and
jovial, a splendid type of citizenship”.
“They were just ranchers
who came here and settled
in Western North Dakota.
They loved the land and they
loved what they did and that
was their life. He did so many
things to help settle this land,”
said Barbara Walla, a great,
great granddaughter.
Over 40 members of the
Stevenson family attended
the recent ceremony and
those who could not attend
got together locally. “It was
something to be able to get
together. It was good to see
all of the relatives,” said Mike
Stevenson, a great grandson.
Farmers’ Market
Merchant Provides
Fresh, Unique Fare
By Jessica Thiessen
As the fall season approaches,
what may be the
last opportunity to enjoy
many tasty, sun-ripened fruits
and vegetables is just getting
underway at the local Farmers’
Market in Sidney.
Donna Trzinski, a longtime
vendor from Savage,
says the Friday market offers
a great chance to find readyto-eat
nutrition brought in by
area garden producers.
Trzinski’s main purpose
in planting her several organic
gardens is to have
fresh, nourishing food to feed
her family. The side benefit to
Donna’s abundant garden
produce is being able to offer
excess of the same
healthy produce in a creative
package to Farmer’s Market
customers. She states that
one of the challenges to returning
to the market year after
year is “finding a unique
niche” for her goods each
summer.
Through this process,
Donna has come up with
several additions to her regu-
assembles salsa boxes containing
all the various essentials
for making a batch of
garden salsa. Trzinski also
arranges decorative gourds,
colored corn and other eyecatching
vegetables in
matching baskets to be used
for fall displays or a Thanksgiving
holiday centerpiece.
For her customers’ convenience
and enjoyment,
Donna sews sturdy, jean
“grocery bags” that will reappear
as shoppers frequent
the weekly market in the
Richland Federal Credit
Union parking lot.
Trzinski, in developing
her garden hobby, periodically
adds new types of
plants to her expanding gardens.
These “experiments”,
such as New Zealand spinach,
Jerusalem artichoke or
lima beans, satisfy her personal
curiosity and provide
variety for her family’s menu.
of carrots, beets, garlic
and tomatoes this year.
Since her initial participation
in this annual event,
Donna has observed many
benefits both for herself and
others. She enjoys using her
outdoor interests to earn a
little income from home—
which is often used to buy the
next year’s seed—and form
friendships throughout this
special time of year spent
getting to know other vendors
and returning customers.
She especially values
the frequent learning that
takes place through the sharing
of garden tips and recipes
for things like zucchini
bread, pancakes or muffins.
She expects this year at the
Farmer’s Market to be no different—a
treasured time of
conversation and learning
between area residents who
take satisfaction in buying
and selling garden-fresh produce.
Dr. Dirt
"Old As Dirt"
By Jerry Kessler
Because my wife is a few
years younger than me, I
have been accused of “robbing
the cradle”. This morning,
when I woke up, I discovered
that I was in bed with
an old woman. How did this
happen? My wife, you see,
turns 50 years old this week.
If she’s that old, that makes
me really old. I remember
when we were just kids.
Where has the time gone?
I think it is ironic that Artificial
Intelligence (computer
stuff), Play-Doh (kid stuff) and
Shelley (my wife) were all “invented”
50 years ago. Computers
can now do all our
thinking so that we can play
more. Being alive at this time
in history has other advantages
as well. We don’t have
to worry about food, water, or
shelter. We have air conditioning
to help us through the
sweltering heat of the summer.
We have heated homes
to warm us on the coldest of
winter days. Most of us live
well into our ‘80s compared
to an average lifespan of 47
in 1900. Turning 50 is something
we celebrate, and joke
about; but is not usually associated
with “end of life”
concerns.
My dad never made it to
50. He died at age 49 of a
heart attack. I used to think
that I was going to mysteriously
drop dead on my 49 th
birthday, even though I have
enjoyed good health. I don’t
run marathons anymore, but
can still dig more holes per
hour than the 18 year olds
who work for me. My dad
smoked four packs of cigarettes
per day, a habit he
picked up in his youth. Since
I don’t smoke or drink, I can
reasonably expect to live a
few more years. It’s all a crap
shoot, though. I could be run
over by a truck tomorrow.
My wife is 50, but has the
spirit of a teenager. Most days
she looks 15 years younger
than her age. She isn’t too old
to act silly, and loves to help
people celebrate their special
occasions. And she does
way too many volunteer activities.
It must be a sign of
my age, but I worry about her
when she over-extends herself.
I tell her to “slow down”
in the same way my mother
used to tell me to do the
same.
We all need to slow
down. Our days on this earth
are numbered—no matter
who we are, or how healthy
we are. Whatever difficulties
we encounter, it’s important
to be grateful for the things
we have. Wise people even
appreciate their difficulties,
because they provide more
opportunity for personal
growth than does comfort or
success. And we should
never be reluctant to tell the
important people in our life
that we love them. You never
know when you could lose
that chance . . . forever.
It’s true. With the passage
of time, my wife and I are becoming
forgetful. Being forgetful
has its advantages,
though. My wife used to get
mad at me for leaving the toilet
seat up; now she can’t remember
that it bothers her.
And your secrets are always
safe with us – because we
can’t remember your name,
let alone what you have told
us. We can watch the same
movie night after night without
getting bored, because
we can’t remember how it
turns out. We have three sons
and a dog. I often mix up their
names, which irritates Oscar
to no end. Sometimes it
seems like we’re new parents,
because we’re getting
to know our children (and
each other) in a new way
every day.
If you run into Shelley, my
wife, make sure you wish her
a happy birthday. Tell her she
looks pretty good – for an old
woman! And don’t forget to
tell your wife (or husband) the
same.
Wadopana Celebration Remains
Traditional, Despite Changing Times
By Jaimee Green
Historically, Pow Wows are celebrations of life and the
togetherness of a Native American tribe. Over the last 100
years, those celebrations have evolved into more modern
day events where dancers compete for money. However, the
annual Wadopana Celebration which takes place in Wolf
Point on the Fort Peck Assiniboine and Sioux Reservation is
the oldest, traditional Pow Wow in the state of Montana.
“It has all become so commercialized. Today they dance
for money. But, I am a traditional person,” said Robert Four
Star, an Assiniboine tribal member and professor for Native
American studies at Fort Peck Community College. The
Wadopana Celebration committee has not compromised the
traditional integrity of their Pow Wow.
Historically, the Wadopana is an Assiniboine tradition.
However, today, during this occasion, everyone is welcome
to attend. In fact, there are several opportunities for intertribal
dancing inside the arbor.
The celebration originated from the Omaha tribe located
in the present day state of Nebraska. During that time, back
in 1860, the Pow Wow was referred to as the Grass Dance.
“The Grass Dance was like their Saturday night dance. It was
a way of uniting the people. When you come to a Pow Wow
A young dancer, Azariah Youpee, wears brilliantly
colored traditional Native American regalia, during
the annual Wadopana celebration on the Fort Peck
Assiniboine and Sioux Reservation.
you leave all of your bad, hard feelings behind,” Four Star
said.
The Assiniboine tribe has roots all over Canada from as
far as Edmonton and Calgary, over to Manitoba. In Montana,
there are two reservations where the Assiniboine people
live. They are the Fort Peck and Fort Belknap reservations.
However, Four Star said their history is long and there is
evidence dating back over 10 centuries. “We were here before
anyone was here. There are archeological sites that
date back from as far as 1150,” Four Star said. Along the U.S.
and Canadian borders, from North Dakota and over to the
Sweet Grass hills in Montana, there are six sites all bearing
different names, but collectively referred to as Mortlach. These
are sites where artifacts such as Native American pottery
have been found.
The tribe also has roots along the east side of the Mississippi
River near St. Louis, MO. “There is evidence of Earth
mounds built up along the river. Our leaders may have lived
A young, unidentified dancer waits to enter the arbor
before the inter-tribal dancing begins during the
Wadopana Celebration.
Union Boosts Adopt-A-Tree Project
Pat Dunn, president of Local 285G of the BCTGM, left, presents a $250 check to Kevin Mayer of the
MonDak Chapter of Walleyes Unlimited, to purchase a 20-foot seedless cottonwood tree to be replanted
at Richland Park as part of the “Adopt-A-Tree” project.
on top of them,” Four Star said.
Although they have not commercialized their celebration,
it has changed through the years. “Some of the ceremonies
have gone by the way side. When this first came to our
people, the warriors would tell a story as they danced but a
lot of that has changed. They used to dance around four war
bonnets but that has gone too,” Four Star said. He said they
used to use the celebration as a way of honoring tribal members
who had passed on. Today, they also focus on honoring
members who are still alive.
Traditional Pow Wows were also organized so that participants
received rations to eat during their stay. This year,
they received meat, corn, beans and rice. However, several
vendors set up their stands and sell hamburgers, Indian tacos
and elephant ears, a dessert consisting of fry bread dipped
in cinnamon.
While several traditional teepees were set up in the
camping area, there were also many present day camping
tents and even several trucks and recreational vehicles. With
the inevitable infiltration of modern society, the scene is somewhat
different than how it must have looked a century ago
along the original plains. However, the spirit of the ancient
celebration appears to still be fully intact. Dancers, elaborately
dressed in traditional regalia create a nostalgic feeling
of an older, more traditional, simpler way of life.
The original dress also comes with a rich history. The
jingle dress originated from the Ojibwe tribe, also known as
the Chippewa tribe. “It came out of a dream that was passed
on about healing,” Four Star said. Men wear eagle feather
bustles and move as if they are hunting. Young girls and
women alike wear brilliantly colored regalia.
For the Assiniboine tribe, the drum, which creates the
strong beat, is much more than an instrument for creating
music. “Our people believe the drum is a living thing. They
say these drums have hearts and that they must be treated
like people. You don’t leave them outside. You must take care
of them and they are not to be photographed unless you
have the expressed permission of the owner."
There are also other aspects of the celebrations which
may not be photographed. During the Witgo, dancers wear
cloths completely covering their faces. “They are said to bring
healing to our people through prayer and laughter,” Four
Star said.
One man has been dancing at Pow Wows for over three
decades. “I dance for the health of my people. I also dance
for my wife Hazel. I hope that the younger people will carry
on with it,” said Harry Three Stars, a tribal member.
During the dancing, several elders often speak and carry
a tune during the drumming. The words and sounds are strong
and emotional. Four Star said that as time goes on, fewer
tribal members are able to understand their native language.
Of the 4,700 enrolled members who live on the Fort Peck
Reservation, there are only about 40 to 50 members who
can understand the language and as little as 20 who are
fluent speakers of the Assiniboine language.
Harry Three Stars stands following the hanging of
an eagle staff during the annual Wadopana Celebration
on the Fort Peck Assiniboine and Sioux Reservation.

ROUNDUP, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 15, 2007 19
Li’l Wranglers “Race for Chase”
Li’l Wrangler Youth Rodeo
members participated in
a “Race for Chase” at their
Aug. 2 rodeo.
Over 70 area youth competed
at the Lazy J Bar Arena
for prize money that they
planned on presenting to
Chase Wisness and his family.
The young rodeo athletes
made personal donations of
their winnings, which
amounted to $974.50. Additional
matching funds from
Faith Lutheran Church increased
their contribution by
another $600, for total monies
raised of $1574.50.
They are hoping that
these funds will help to defer
medical costs and expenses
incurred following Chase’s
June 1 accident. Chase
Wisness, 16, a local rodeo
athlete, was paralyzed in a
roll-over crash while on his
way to wrestling camp. He
has a spinal injury and has
spent the last two months
between Bismarck and Denver,
recovering and rehabilitating.
He is on schedule to
be home around Aug. 9.
“The kids just wanted to
do something to let Chase
know that we are all praying
for him. Knowing that he
would appreciate their talented
efforts made their contribution
of prize money from
the youth rodeo an obvious
choice of what they could do,”
stated Becky Ruggles,
spokesperson for the Li’l
Wrangler Youth Rodeo. “We
were overwhelmed by the
kids’ selfless act of kindness,
shown in giving up their prize
money.”
Each child that made a
donation of their prize money
was presented with a gift certificate
from Carolyn Levang,
owner of the Twist Drive-In,
Watford City, in appreciation
for their donation.
Anonymously donated
funds were used to make a
special purchase for Chase,
which was a “Li’l Blue
Heeler” roping dummy, purchased,
at a discounted cost,
from LBH Inc, Jeff Gollehon
and Larry Lorang, owners,
Great Falls, MT.
While at a team roping a
few weeks ago, Jim Aanrud,
Williston, sales manager for
LBH, Inc., brought out his Li’l
Blue Heeler for the kids to
play with. The wheels started
turning in Ruggle’s mind, and
she worked up the nerve to
tell her story to Aanrud, who
immediately started putting
the plan in motion to get
Chase a Li’l Blue Heeler. She
knew personally how this
kind of therapy can work
miracles. “When my husband,
Jay, was in a wheelchair
for six months, he would
sit for hours and hours roping
his “dummy”, and she
knew the benefits it had for
his physical and mental
health. “I think this will be a
wonderful tool for Chase in
his rehabilitation and
therapy,” says Ruggles.
“When Becky inquired
about a purchase of a “LiL
Blue Heeler”, I knew the company
would be more than
willing to help in such a
cause. I contacted the owners
and explained I had just
met Chase a short time prior
to the accident at a team roping
school and really enjoyed
meeting such a fine
young man. The news of the
accident was heart wrenching
and if we could help in
any way in his recovery; we
needed to do so. The owner’s
Anna Jorgenson signs her
name with a personal message
for Chase.
immediate response was
‘Count us in’. We hope
Chase enjoys his Li’l Blue
Heeler and congratulate the
Li’L Wrangler Youth Rodeo
members for their prayers,
efforts and thoughtfulness. To
even be a small part of such
an effort is gratifying,” stated
Aanrud.
In addition to the prize
money and the Li’l Blue
Heeler, the kids all signed a
“Race for Chase” t-shirt, with
their personal message for
Chase. The prayers and support
from the community,
$40,000
Remember, school begins Aug. 22. There is a lot of increased traffic on our streets
and roadways. The Sidney Board of Trustees urges everyone to take extra care as our
children board buses and cross the streets. Their safe arrival at school depends on
everyone being extra careful. Be sure to stop for all school buses and always yield to
a pedestrian crossing the road. The younger children are just learning...Give them a
