VERNADOC 2013 PORTUGAL<br />

International Vernacular Architecture Documentation Camp<br />

Articulated with the ICOMOS-CIAV annual meeting, to be<br />

held in Vila Nova de Cerveira, The University Institution<br />

<strong>Escola</strong> <strong>Superior</strong> <strong>Gallaecia</strong> (ESG), the Convento da Orada<br />

Foundation (FCO) and the city hall of Viana do Castelo will<br />

host the next VERNADOC camp in October, 2013. This<br />

event is integrated in the long tradition of survey camps,<br />

which begun in Finland more than a century ago and are<br />

now developed under the ICOMOS aegis. Interested<br />

professionals and students of architecture are encouraged<br />

to apply.<br />

The two-week camp will be held in the city of Viana do<br />

Castelo, in the Norwest of Portugal. The camp will<br />

document a set of vernacular watermills in the isolated<br />

settlement of Montaria, in the Serra d’Arga region. The<br />

inking process will be processed in the Public Library of<br />

Viana do Castelo, designed by the renowned architect<br />

Álvaro Siza Vieira.<br />

Location: Viana do Castelo, Portugal.<br />

Date: 1 st – 14 th , October, 2013<br />

Participants: 30 (total)<br />

All participants will be working either individually or in groups and will spend the majority of the time in<br />

the field, at times under harsh conditions using simple documentation tools and techniques.<br />

- 10 to 15 international veterans:<br />

VERNADOC network elements, with relevant experience in the documentation and hand drawing of<br />

vernacular architecture (from Finland, Thailand, Egypt, Iran, Pakistan, U.A.E., Portugal, Spain and Italy).<br />

- 10 participants among ESG student’s applications:<br />

Open to all interested in developing their technical drawing skills.<br />

- 5 to 10 participants among external applications<br />

Open to all interested in developing their technical drawing skills, preferably oriented to Architecture<br />

students.<br />

Language: Basic English is mandatory<br />

Time Table:<br />

- One week for sketches, measuring and basic drawings.<br />

- One week for finishing drawings manually on paper with ink.<br />

- Six working days a week.<br />

- Eight working hours a day.<br />

- Local excursions will be provided by the camp organization.<br />

- The produced drawings will be publish and exhibit.<br />

- Final days to assemble the exhibition.<br />

- A set of free hand sketching workshops will be developed in parallel under the guidance of ESG<br />

drawing teachers.<br />

Certificate: The participants will be awarded a certificate at the end of the camp.<br />

Accommodation and Subsistence Costs:<br />

All the participants will be provided with drawing material, lunch and daily transportation from Viana do<br />

Castelo.<br />

Local accommodation and daily meals will be provided to all the international veterans during the<br />

camp. Travel expenses to and from Viana do Castelo will not be provided.<br />

Accommodation and dinner is not provided to the applicants (ESG students or external applicants).<br />

Selected external applicants will have a 100€ registration fee, according specific registration form,<br />

regarding material, lunch and daily transportation expenses.<br />

Application: applicants should send a brief presentation/bio with motivational reasons for the<br />

participation, photo and contact (no bigger than 1 page) to: ciav2013@esg.pt with the subject:<br />

“Application for Vernadoc 2013”.<br />

Applications must be received by the 31st July 2013 to ensure inclusion in the selection process.<br />

Candidates will be notified about the final selection in the 1st week of September 2013.<br />
